I still swear to god that Rancid's "Junkie Man" features the line, "Tommy Lasorda's never been kissed".

jen ramos-eisen@jenramose.online

I'm finally getting around to listening to the latest Wild Pink album and I swear to god I heard the line "like Billy Beane before the streak" and I looked it up and yeah

As a Northern Californian-come-Philadelphian, I'm enjoying Merlan's accidental beat of highlighting all the animals that make me say "kill it kill it kill it kill it"

Underlaying this discourse is the fact that Cheesecake Factory entrees run such insane hidden calorie counts that it more or less single handedly fueled chain restaurant calorie transparency laws.

Anyway, my choice for fine fried dining in my late teens/early 20s was Goleta's own Elephant Bar. Servings of spinach-artichoke dip large enough to mortar a castle but with that awkward soupcon of colonialism.

In 08/09, as the state was going insolvent, they had the choice to keep UC tuition at current levels OR maintain the prisons at the peak three-strikes levels. Guess which they chose.

Karl Jacoby@karl-jacoby.bsky.social

The soaring costs of public universities is a political decision. When these schools predominantly served white students, they tended to be free (UC, CCNY, etc.) But as the number of students of color has increased, funding for the public universities has decreased. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/b...

The other funny thing about this is, I saw this same writing (same hand) near Republique and went through a complete context collapse (porch collapse, even) because it didn't occur to me the actual young communards would be quoting Disco Elysium.

I know it’s sorta cheesy but someone posted this from Paris on Reddit and I felt this immediate rush of hope

I thought it was Susan O'Malley, which is SUCH a stupid thing to be quoting in the face of neoliberal authoritarianism that I likely already earned my place up against the wall.

It's the same with people who are likely to be mauled to death by a crocodile. What you want to look for in the photo is a face tattoo reading "I HAVE A PET CROCODILE".

Scientific American@sciam.bsky.social

An AI model can predict whether you’re likely to die of cancer from a single photo of your face, according to new research. sciam.com/article/can-...

The XO calls for a new division within HHS, which would also be the first division within HHS, as HHS isn't divided into divisions.

Cowards, you should've gone with the Taylor Walls quote, "Winning is fine, but my heart? My heart belongs to knitting."

Nice exploration of the complexity of biological sex--and an emphasis that "sex" is not a construct... it's a word. It's a word that refers to different constructs in different contexts. & one of the many transphobic madnesses is using state power to hurt people to keep a word from having contexts!

Rebecca R Helm@rebeccarhelm.bsky.social

Friendly neighborhood biologist here. I see a lot of people are talking about biological sexes right now. Lots of folks make biological sex seem really simple. Well, since it’s so simple, let’s find the biological roots, shall we? Let’s talk about sex...[a thread] (Reposted from the other site)

To the point where historically we "treated" symptoms like anemia and ended up extending the infection.

Katie Mack@astrokatie.com

And then you start thinking, “wait, is ALL illness like this?” And it mostly is! Most viruses/bacteria aren’t *themselves* causing you pain; your immune response is, in various ways. Your happiness and comfort are of zero priority to your immune system. All it wants is to kill the bug.

This sounds needlessly moralistic but it's grounded in research. Even unrestricted monies--even nominal honoraria!--distort decisions and results.

No they don't.

The New York Times@nytimes.com

Sexualized ads featuring Sydney Sweeney promoting a gambling prediction market and Megan Fox endorsing a male enhancement product have drawn pushback from fans, and even athletes. How an advertisement makes it to air is — mostly — up to the networks.

Stupid hypersexualized ads are about the most tedious and unremarkable things in sports media. They are so far downstream from what's broken in our culture that it's like telling someone with cancer they have a zit.

I find it hard to believe that "the cool lion is Jesus" brings kids around to Jesus so much as affirms what they already know, namely: whether or not it is Jesus, a lion is pretty cool.

Okay so here's a tepid defense: this could earnestly be entirely about California booze. The problem is, Napa is fucked for reasons far more profound than trade wars. Climate change, generational tends, and the end of prosperity are wrecking it. That cab goldrush is donezo.

Sen. Adam Schiff@schiff.senate.gov

Without American wine on Canadian shelves, Canadians are also missing out on tens of millions of dollars in tax revenue they would obtain from selling our wine.

My read is that Schiff isn't using wine to covertly legitimize Albertan separatism, he's earnestly out there stumping for wine and not caring either way if he legitimizes Albertan separatism.

I mean, sure he's the favorite son of an industry that announced they will probably kill everyone, and sure he's directed state power at rooting out all those creeping Palestine-lovers, but he also passed a housing bill so, it;s impossible to say if hes bad or not,

This is also occurring during APHA, and I only regret that countermarketing research never touched on "heckling like a drunken British yob".

For so long, Branswell's byline has been a beacon of clear and urgent reporting. What a loss.

Amy Maxmen, PhD@amymaxmen.bsky.social

I'm stunned by the news of Helen Branswell's passing. She was a force in science journalism. Gone too soon. 💔https://www.statnews.com/2026/10/13/helen-branswell-stat-reporter-obituary/

This is sexist nonsense. Everything makes me stupid.

Jay Van Bavel, PhD@jayvanbavel.bsky.social

Interacting with attractive women makes men stupid. The researchers found that even a few minutes with the attractive woman was enough to make the students slower and less accurate on the test. Women were unnaffected by interacting with handsome men. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

It'll be substantially more difficult to tell people about AI curing your cancer after heart disease gives you that stroke.

To the degree that I wonder if the point is just to mainstream misogyny by making everyone with a sense of context or history or humor just feel weary. An institutional mandate that every shirt be a Big Johnson shirt.

Elizabeth Spiers@espiers.bsky.social

The thing about Gillis's monologue isn't just that it's misogynistic; it's that it's misogynistic in the most unoriginal, dated, cringe-ily 1982 would-be Andrew Dice Clay way. Like, wow slut shaming women in workout clothes, where'd you dig that fossil up

There was an actual, effective plan to end outdoor drug use--by providing indoor spaces. The backlash was nearly as quick as it was lethal.

Nato Green@natogreen.bsky.social

Everyone who works in the field knew and said at the beginning that bringing back the war on drugs wouldn’t work, but were ignored by ideologues like Lurie.

The only reason holiday dinners at the Pea Soup Andersen's in Santa Nella aren't a longstanding tradition is that literally everyone has refused to have one with me.

My unpopular countermarketing dork take is, they should mostly be legal but only sold in plain packaging. That said, leaving Juul--who closely reproduced combustion cigarette nicotine titration patterns, aggressively marketed to kids, and are now part of Altria--on the approved list is a joke.

Only six manufacturers’ products, like Juul and Vuse, are allowed to be sold in Pennsylvania.
