Just like I did, you might have missed that GitHub now supports running GitHub Actions steps in parallel! Super helpful when some steps aren't very CPU intensive. For example, fetch frontend dependencies while the backend tests run.

github.blogActions steps can now be run in parallel - GitHub ChangelogGitHub Actions now supports running steps concurrently using background. Previously, all steps in a workflow ran in sequence, with each step starting only after the previous step completed. Previously...

Recession indicator: third email in one week suggesting that I create a coin or token to "sponsor" my open source projects.

The Design Museum in London is really cool - and free entry! Really recommend if you happen to be in west London. Lots of interesting gadgets in the shop as well.

For any LLM sceptics out there. Russ is probably the most talented dev I've ever met.

Russ Cox@swtch.com

Frontier LLMs are much better and dramatically faster than I am at finding and fixing bugs. If you are not asking them to debug your code and review your bugs, you are doing it wrong. A thread of Claude wins. (No longer at Google, btw.)

The social aspect of @tangled.org would work better if I could see which people I follow are on there, as well as navigate trending repos in more detail, e.g. by language or timeframe. The site is getting there though!

Gerrit seems to be an issue with AI transcripts 😆 Garret is being slow, Garret is down today, can you please look at Garret... Poor guy doesn't get a break.

I receive a handful of drive-by AI PRs per week. I've decided to start rejecting ones from accounts which seem to target issues across dozens of unrelated projects. I don't know if they're trying to pad their resume, or claim broad experience, but I'm not interested in participating.

And I have nothing against AI use per se. But it's clear that all that these accounts are doing is use an AI plan to create as many PR fixes as possible, with no deep understanding, usage, or participation in each project. Not at all worth my time as a maintainer.

I know it's not the biggest news of the day, but I just spotted this... One of Keir Starmer's last acts in Govt is this: Laying legislation that will legalise 'plug-in solar' (aka balcony solar) panels in Britain It means plug-in solar panels do not (legally) have to be wired in by an electrician.

GitHub Actions is down *again*. I can't do this anymore. What are people switching to? I need Linux+Mac+Windows support, GitHub or Gerrit integration, and all the usual: secrets, webhooks, logs, etc. For context, we already have scalable machines for all OSes via @namespacelabs.com.

This is a fun one: I just sent go.dev/cl/790740, which elides method wrappers for embedded types at offset zero, common for mixins/inherited data types. Doing this removes 60 _thousand_ method wrappers from tsgo's AST package, dropping the compilation of our main exe from 49s to 28s on my machine.

It really does feel like GitHub is getting worse by the day. Now I regularly get bogus "invalid value" label errors when the label clearly exists and works.

Stared at my screen for a good while, not understanding why a git diff didn't git apply when it obviously should. Turns out Discord turns tabs into spaces when you send code snippets, even inside triple quotes 🙄 As a workaround, use git apply --ignore-whitespace.

The issue with GitHub Actions used to be its poor design. Nowadays it's down so often, that I don't even get to think about that at all.

PSA: Green Tea GC in go1.26 is incredible 🚀 This is what we saw for two big Go services. We'll try to gather more data and share it soon.

It's about two and a half years since we installed a heat pump and disconnected gas in this house, so out of curiosity I went to look at our average efficiency over this time. The install study predicted about 350%, but we're actually averaging 425%!

We've barely touched the settings, so I wonder if the study was a bit conservative. It could also be that the outdoor unit is south facing, so it gets a lot of sunlight - that must help it somewhat.

I'm officially looking around, if anybody needs a Go software engineer with a very strong background in web security lmk. I also know a fair share of frontend dev and was a SWE/SE for Google and Microsoft. I'm looking for security-sensitive dev projects and security reviews.

We're at KubeCon Amsterdam. If you want to find out how to prevent misconfigurations ending up in production, come by (Hall 5, 1163). Or join us for a chat about configuration, preventable outages, schemas, or our configuration control plane.

I'm at #FOSDEM all weekend! Ping me to talk #cuelang or #golang :)

Tonight's the night! We have a boatload of demos lined up and it's looking like we'll pack Newspeak House. We'll also have a quick informal show-and-tell at the start if you've found something interesting in the Atmosphere and want to share! See you there!

Needing to use GnuPG to decrypt one file after not using it for nearly ten years, and I'm reminded of why I stopped using it. And yup, I completely failed at decrypting the one file with a simple password. Twenty minutes of googling and doc reading after, I just feel like I'm losing my mind.

I'll be at #FOSDEM next week! Haven't been since 2014, which feels like a lifetime ago. If we have met or collaborated in the past, or you'd like to say hi, my DMs are open :) #golang #cuelang
