We've lost something—a connection to what's around us, a sense of community—The Dispatch is bringing it back. Watch this space as we get ready to launch the New River Valley's local paper.

Longest Senate floor speeches: 1. Booker: 25h 4m, 2025 2. Thurmond: 24h 18m, 1957 3. Amato: 23h 30m, 1986 4. Morse: 22h 26m, 1953 5. Cruz: 21h 18m, 2013

Been looking into the US transplant system, trying to guess at how big an impact recent innovations might have (pig kidneys & hearts, titanium heart, etc.) and what future areas might have the most impact

Unfortunately the HRSA data for transplant list removal reason seems to only be available center by center. Might have some manual tabulation to do

Also wonder about the blind spots of that data. How many people’s lives would be saved by a transplant, but don’t ever get on the registry? How many could have their quality of life improved by one?

Sounds like ICE employed El Salador’s strategy for rounding up people to send there: arrest anyone who looks like they might be in a gang (anyone who has tattoos) and lock ‘em all up. No questions. No trials. No recourse.

In the stories I’ve seen of people being unreasonably detained by ICE, the officers’ behavior is just so… strange. They seem to know what’s going to happen. They won’t say what. They won’t say why. When asked, they claim ignorance.

It’s shocking to me how little we seem to care about Congress. I just looked through the entire staff directory at VT and, as best I can tell, nobody here studies what happens after members are elected.

With the firing of the inspectors general, there isn’t really anyone providing federal oversight. Congress needs to fill its role here.

I’m no expert, I’m sure there‘s a lot more that needs to be done, but this is a start. I plead with every Senator and every Representative: PLEASE do your job

Congress needs to give itself enough funding to do its job. I imagine each any every member knows how short staffed they are. There simply aren’t enough people to get the work done.

Congress has ceded its power. They have damaged our system of checks and balances. The Courts are the last check on the President. If he can get away with ignoring a court order, we will have lost our Republic.

Ignoring court orders. They’re stretching the limits. If the limits bend at all, they don’t bend back. Every seemingly small act is a fight to keep our democracy.

Been reading up on Columbus' city projects and it's looking great! City council deserves major props for leading the nation on zoning reform!

My @bsky.app wishlist - better feed refresh, if more than 1 or 2 new posts show up it’s hard to tell what’s new and not. I love Reeder’s solution for this) - simple formatting in posts - more profile customization, make it fun and playful! would be so cool to pick a color theme everyone would see!

Most shocking moment of last night for me: “I also have a message tonight for the incredible people of Greenland. We strongly support your right to determine your own future, and if you choose, we welcome you into the United States of America… One way or the other.”

Congress needs to take its power back. Increase staffing, reverse cuts to their budget, retake ownership of the oversight powers. Stop the madness.

One thing that I am clear on: even if we can vote Trump out, there will inevitably be another like him. Major reform is needed.

Similarly I feel there are some bad taxes: flat sales tax doesn’t make sense (and if you have to PLEASE use VAT), pure property tax is unfair, etc.

Fun sidebar: I wonder if an economy where individuals aren’t ever directly taxed is possible? Make the old saying about death and taxes at least partially obsolete.

Not arguing we discourage private ownership, but taxing based. Effectively pay a rent to society for using some of their land.

All of this encourages an effective, safe, and even efficient economy. It shifts the cost burden to those who produce it. It makes the morally right choice and the business right choice the same choice.

Economics 101 concept: negative externalities are the cost to society or a third party of a party’s actions. It’s borne by everyone, not just who caused it.

There are many taxes already proposed or implemented along these lines: carbon tax, tobacco tax, etc. I also think land value tax fits a similar mold. If you take the perspective that the world is the common heritage of mankind, then private use of land detracts value from society’s “portfolio.”

Should taxation be about negative externalities? What if we made taxes about accounting the true cost of companies’ actions rather than “raising revenue?”

I can officially @bsky.app is leagues better than any other platform I've joined. I love being able to curate everything, plus the idea of feeds is really cool & unique! Being here reminds me of how people talk about the early, hopeful days of the internet

You are up to date.
