Hi, friends! This is to let you know that I switched from my previous handle (nsj dot bsky dot social) to my domain, @natejohnson.org (which is just a redirect to my LinkedIn profile for now.) Same ol' me, though. Cat picture because why not, the world needs more cat pics.

I’ve made the trip from Universal City to LAX many times, and I’m not sure it’s ever been the same way twice. Today’s route went through downtown and is on the 110 to the 105. Nice view of DTLA on the way in. (Pardon the reflection!)

The Uber driver for my ride back to the airport is Liberian and asked what I’d eaten while I was here. He listened then suggested next time I look for a place that serves jollof rice. I’m no Anthony Bourdain, but I’m definitely going to seek this out. Sounds delicious.

I’m in Minneapolis, it’s 70° with no humidity, and I just had a very good Mediterranean dinner outside. I regret nothing. I just wish I could share that with all of you suffering in the heat and humidity back home (like I will be this weekend).

Question for the arborists here on BlueSky… I live near Raleigh NC, and my house backs up to a natural wooded area. How concerned should I be about otherwise healthy looking trees like these here being too close together? (1/)

Should I look to cut the smaller ones to prevent competition or just leave ‘em alone? Pics 1 and 2 are the same area; pic 3 is a different area. (2/2)

Just saw Project Hail Mary for the second time. It’s definitely a movie I wish I could see again for the first time, but what I gave up in the thrill of the first viewing I gained in noticing some of the things I missed the first time because I was too wound up.

When you've had the driest start to a year since records began, a forecast like this is enough to bring your local meteorologist, hydrologist, climatologist, farmer, river keeper, and water manager to tears. Will this end the drought? Nope. Would it make a nice dent? You betcha.

Extra thoughts: Yes, it is a bummer that it hits on a holiday weekend. No, it will not rain every moment of every day. Yes, most hours of most of these days will be dry and fine for outdoor activities. No, the "100%" on Sunday does not mean it will rain all day. Yes, the heat is gone for a week.

If you're planning to tailgate this evening, keep an eye to the sky. Good chance for showers/thunderstorms as we get into the evening hours.

I know ESPN gets a lot of deserved stuff, but this post from Ryan McGee detailing the tailgate culture with the Canes is such a good read. www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/...

I'm disappointed that the Jankowski goal was disallowed, but it's great that the review opened up everything and they awarded the penalty shot on a foul the refs didn't call the first time through. I don't hate that at all.

Got some more data yesterday on model verification - there is a definitive decreasing trend in global model scores that raises concerns about NWS upper air struggles. But this is a complex scientific problem that needs dedicated experiments to understand what the actual impacts might be.

Verification data from global models for the Northern Hemisphere in 2025 showed a notable decrease in skill, not just for the NWS GFS model but nearly all global models. While this is suggestive of NWS upper air struggles being a contributing factor, it is not definitive. More: tinyurl.com/nhh2jamw

It's been a wild 24 hours in the Triangle. 4pm yesterday: 89.1°, SW wind gusting to 30 mph 4pm today: 39.9°, N wind gusting to 31 mph A 49.2°F drop, multiple hours of winds 30+ — oh — and a round of very gusty thunderstorms, too (with wind damage reported not far away). Fun day for weather fans.

Seriously, my central NC friends — get outside! touch grass! open your windows! It's absolutely gorgeous and feels GREAT outside right now and will for a few more hours.

Hope you dressed in layers! RDU has warmed a stunning *42 Fahrenheit* degrees since our low of 27° this morning. As of 3pm, we're at 69 and knocking on the door of 70.

The first two bowl games today were meh - some excitement but outcome not in doubt for much of the game. The Sugar Bowl, OTOH, is more than making up for any lack of excitement. Well into the 4th quarter and I have no idea who’s going to win.

Forced password and passcode changes that don't give you any heads up or warning and that use a different keyboard (QWERTY vs 10-key) than the default input are terrible UX and terrible design.

@gruber.foo Re: recent DF post on CarPlay. Another factor that doesn't get much press is that of incongruent time scales between phones and cars. Not only do people replace phones more frequently than they replace cars, and phones are designed and manufactured on much shorter time scales. 1/2

@gruber.foo CarPlay & Android Auto let drivers have the best of both worlds — benefits of newer apps (phone, audio streaming, maps, etc.) built on phones that get new HW 3-4x in the typical ownership of a car — without having to buy an entire new car that would make such SW upgrades possible. 2/2

Used today’s 50th anniversary of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald (and the song of the same name) to workshop how to produce a TikTok/Instagram-style video with my media meteorology class. Kinda wish I’d just told them to run with this for this week’s assignment - some really neat ideas.

Periodic reminder: A “ground stop” for XYZ airport means traffic destined to fly to XYZ is being held on the ground at their points of origin, not that anything has “stopped” at XYZ. So, a “ground stop for CLT” means planes at *other airports* are stopped from leaving for CLT.

Wolfpack Nation! Do not let the warmth of the afternoon sun fool you! Temperatures will CRASH at sunset, leaving us in the lower 50s at kickoff and deep into the 40s by the time the game is over. Stay warm! Bring your (red!) jackets/coats and your hot chocolate money.
