theguardian.com'Godfather of AI' says tech regulation is nearing Covid-style pivot momentConcerns over AI safety are reaching a point where governments realise they must act to protect the public, similarly to in the Covid pandemic, according to one of the “godfathers” of the technology. Yoshua Bengio said recent events, including a “swarm” of OpenAI agents hacking a startup and tech insider warnings of an existential threat, were cutting through – making government action more likely. The Canadian computer scientist, a prominent voice in the campaign to rein in breakneck AI development, said he was now “more optimistic than many observers because I see the public moving”. Comparing the AI safety crisis to the onset of the Covid pandemic in 2020, Bengio said: “Think about how quickly governments moved after the beginning of the pandemic when they realised that public safety, their future, democracy, was in danger. So we are, I think, nearing that point.” Concern over the potential threat of powerful AI systems has reached a new pitch in recent months after a series of safety incidents involving OpenAI and Anthropic agents carrying out unsanctioned activities such as hacking third parties, hijacking a German website, and using fake identities to try to trick developers...

"While the lack of attention paid to tribal sovereignty or the oppression of indigenous persons in the Belmont Report may not be surprising given its historical context, it is the [bias of] individual rights that's perhaps most at odds with indigenous perspectives" bioethicstoday.org/blog/beyond-...

The Indigenous Data Sovereignty Movement cannot be stopped. In 2024, we submitted or worked on innovative decentralized grants with the Venter Institute, 100& Change with Stanford & African Nations &D4I TDR These ideas of secure, decolonized data sharing are spreading like wildfire. See here.

NativeBio was invited to speak at the Genomics Standards Consortium in Aotearoa & give a lecture at the University of Otago. Co-Learning w/ our Indigenous relatives worldwide is necessary for alliances that are cultural, spiritual, political and financial. We hope that we furthered that worthy goal.

Not sure who might see this. I am hoping the Association on American Indian Affairs, National Congress of American Indians, and Assembly of First Nations, but it lays out in pictures the problems, the ways to mitigate, and the quickly closing window in which to act!!
