Sexual violence can haunt victims for a lifetime—especially when there is injustice. Dolores Huerta taught all of us that it’s never too late to make it right. A beautiful, transformative contribution at the end of a life dedicated to making the world a better place.

rest in peace to Dolores Huerta. after a lifetime of organizing, in her last year on earth, she chose to be brave enough to change the historical record; in doing so, she set an example for generations of feminists

For several days I have been hearing rumors of an ICE detainee death that ICE was not reporting. I've just learned a local journalist has confirmed it and will publish soon. Now I read this and see there are actually TWO deaths ICE is not reporting. www.daylightsandiego.org/ice-detainee...

One of the things sheriffs do is warp the perception of democracy. Each county has one sheriff no matter how few (or many) people live there. About 2/3 of counties are rural (there's no real definition of rural, so this is broad). Little map for you. The green is rural.

Alex Burness@burness.bsky.social

That’s a staggering fact to take in: About 1/3 of U.S. counties are now contractually partnered with ICE—to say nothing of all the counties assisting ICE more informally. I wrote recently about what this type of collaboration can do to communities: boltsmag.org/frederick-co...

I know there's a lot going on but I feel it should probably be more of an above-the-fold story that members of Congress released a thoroughly documented report directly accusing the president of the United States of being a serial rapist.

This is what I meant when I said in 2024 that when I looked at the incoming administration, all I could see was rape. It’s the heinous act itself, yes, but also a mentality, as deftly explained here:

A serial rapist was elected twice as President, a fact we don't reckon with nearly enough. Now one of two major political parties has been molded in his image, run for and by violent sexual abusers who hate women.

The only reason I can think of for this news not being absolutely everywhere is that large media orgs don’t want to be seen as putting their thumbs on the scales a week before election day. And that’s cowardly as shit.

Homicide is the leading cause of death among pregnant people. New research shows that since the end of Roe, women’s risk for being murdered in states with abortion bans has increased. This builds on a growing devastating catalog of data showing bans’ impact on domestic violence:

A major theme of the Trump administration is that sexual violence perpetration is a sign of strength that qualifies someone to hold power. It follows that the same people would believe that sexual violence victimization is a sign of disqualifying weakness.

One of the big findings in my research is that people invested in disbelieving victims are not swayed by evidence. Just like other issues of misinformation, they cherry pick irrelevant details to allow them to continue to believe whatever they want.

You know what pissed me off about the Ramaswamy ad beyond the obvious grotesqueries? There’s no EVIDENCE disputing Acton’s life story. There are court proceedings backing up her story.
