How it works: Some lunatic in the US: Fish are all Stalinists! Well-intentioned people on this website, quote-posting the lunatic relentlessly: That's untrue because lots of seals are actually anarchists and according to science fish are birds anyway! *sigh*

Current niche hate: the construction "We consider [equation], where" followed by three hundred clauses and definitions rumbling past the reader like a North American freight train. I don't care if sentences like this can in principle be parsed: the question is whether they should be.

How do people learn to write like this? "Apprentice! I have read your draft. It is a single rambling sentence covering sixteen pages; the clauses are backward and the notation is like rubbing spiders into your eyes. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. The next draft must be at least forty pages long."

Musical friends, please appreciate Charles Rennie Mackintosh's *extremely 1970s voice* Piano Of Love.

Modestly low-key art nouveau piano at the House for an Art Lover in Bellahouston Park, Glasgow (which was built in the 1990s to an early c20th Charles Rennie Mackintosh design).

There's a good post on the House for an Art Lover here: www.rob-tomlinson.com/places/house... The design was probably a Mackintosh/Macdonald joint effort. It failed to win the prize for which it was submitted because they'd not included interior perspective drawings.

rob-tomlinson.comHouse for an Art Lover, Glascow | Rob TomlinsonAlthough the great Charles Rennie and Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh never saw this building in the flesh - only in their designs and drawings, it bears their imprint faithfully. Their 14 drawings for ...

Every _other_ entry to the competition, meanwhile, was disqualified for failing "to satisfy the requirement that accepted practice in domestic design be fully challenged". Reviewer 2 was alive and well and living in Germany in the early twentieth century.

Could we rebrand "stockpile a few days' worth of essential supplies if you can" as "form a mutual aid starter pack"? Would some of you be happier then? (Yes, I get that not everyone can; maybe that's why folk who can should.)

I don't have a lot of time for football, but props to the bloke who was standing in his shorts on Pollokshaws Road in the rain waiting for his mates to pick him up, and who was attempting keepie-uppie in the gusts to keep himself warm. I feel the Scottish sporting energy here was very pure.

The domain seems to have been sold a few months ago and the blog updates date back only to September; in that time hundreds of pages have appeared. There's something about the uniformity of style that has an LLM-assisted flavour, but I might be doing the (anonymous) creators an injustice.

Good on them if this is an attempt to provide something better than existing resources (TheGlasgowStory, etc.); I just hope it's not going to be yet another outlet for the standard factlets presented without attribution or uncertainty.

Have just taken a couple of big branches off the sprawling birch outside our front window, partly for light but also to make the tree less vulnerable to the coming storm. I now feel acutely guilty and have apologised three times to the tree.

OK, I was foolish to make a facetious comment about open source on social media. I am now withdrawing support for this facetious comment due to other personal and professional commitments. No further patches or other updates will be supplied.

A glimmer of hope from Dundee following their gruelling weeks of industrial action. New Principal; possibly a new approach...?

We welcome Angela Scott’s announcement to pause the compulsory redundancy process. We have always been willing to return to the negotiations in good faith and the two week pause allows us to do this with the aim of reaching a position that reduces the number of compulsory redundancies. 1/2

(Last repost: the "some random guy in the Czech Republic" model is not without drawbacks, but I prefer it to the model in which all modern digital infrastructure relies on something that got bought up by nazi-backed private equity five years ago and which they will suddenly break, while giggling.)

Obligatory modified xkcd.

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

Will anyone else be freeing up mental space this storm season by referring to them as Austen, Busten, Custen, Dusten, Eusten and so on? Under current circs I feel it's a choice between remembering what they're called and remembering what I'm called, and on balance the latter is more useful to me.

I can't remember which of you tipped me off that the Kentigern statue on the Tron steeple is working again, but thank you. For the uninitiated: on the hour he rings his bell, his wee bird flaps its wings, and his salmon revolves slowly with an air of utter unimpressedness.

I do not love the fact that when I do a Google image search for "nhs recovery position", this (not from the NHS) is one of the first images that shows up. WHAT IF SOMEONE COLLAPSES AND I DON'T HAVE A COFFEE TABLE HANDY?

Shoutout (derogatory) to local authorities who still want students to get paperwork marked with "the official University stamp". I'm not sure I've ever seen this object, but if you give me twenty minutes, a sharp knife, and half a potato I'll see what I can do.

First draft of an Official University Stamp featuring the Official University Seal. I'm in the process of raising a purchase order for one potato through our new institutional procurement system. Prototyping is expected to begin in 2029.

I am currently on a Faculty committee which contains three people called Christine. Do people still circulate requests like "please send X to Christine"? Yes, they do. Do hilarious consequences result? No.

I've been thinking about certain questions for a quarter of a century or so, occasionally making infinitesimal progress on some of them, and I still get very twitchy if I see my name in the same sentence as the word "expert". This is normal, right?

(Back in the days when maths researchers all still had self-authored web pages there were basically two flavours: "I have personally defeated eleventeen hundred research problems by smashing them to pieces with my MIGHTY VIRILE THINKING ORGAN", and "i like sums". Guess which flavour I had.)

Today in marking: a student who has submitted their essay as one big image file inserted in a Word document. I fear there will now be an argument about whether an image of text is the same as the text itself, and if I'd wanted to teach René sodding Magritte I would not have taken my current job.

Maybe I should sic the Bluesky alt-text crew onto the offender, but that feels rather like summoning the Wild Hunt to pursue someone who's taken six items through the five-items-or-fewer queue at the supermarket. (OK: given the power I would totally do _that_.)

Colonel Brandon has donned his flannel waistcoat. Mr Woodhouse has gleefully cancelled every engagement for the next six months. Catherine Morland is looking for a scenic ruin in which to be scared of the lightning. Fanny Price has taken no precautions because nothing could make her any wetter.

Storm Austen has been named by the Met Office bringing disruptive wind and rain from late Thursday and into Friday. Read our full news release here➡️ www.metoffice.gov.uk/about-us/new...

Apart from anything else, I'm just some internet rando with a blog. If you're not fact-checking me (and that includes getting in touch to take me up on the offer to discuss my sources) I'm not convinced that your information hygiene is what it ought to be.

Today in "why railway history makes me fear for my sanity": the three stations below the Shields Road railway bridge, each with its own booking office and waiting room, and platforms so close you could have held a conversation from one to the other across the tracks.

They were Shields Station (Glasgow & South Western), Shields Road Station (City of Glasgow Union), and Pollokshields Station (Glasgow & Paisley Joint). Please do not make the rookie error of confusing Pollokshields with either Pollokshields East or Pollokshields West, let alone either Pollokshaws.

This _entirely sensible_ arrangement lasted from 1885 until 1925, when Shields Road, the largest station, simply ate the others, to cartographical relief. As far as I can see nothing of the stations now remains. (HT: @am-broc.bsky.social for sending me down this particular badger hole.)
