Neocities and hosted sites are not affected by PHP2Shell, we don't use PHP. However, if you have any non-Neocities sites running PHP, you need to patch them immediately. Read more here: www.wiz.io/blog/php2she... Cursory reading suggests this could be the worst exploit in web history.

FYI, there was an issue with verification emails not being sent over the last few hours that has been resolved, emails should be catching up soon.

Front site will be down ~30-60 minutes while we migrate to a new filesystem backend (finishing up the upgrades from last week). This is the beginning of support for site snapshots, so eventually it will be a new feature. Thanks for your patience!

FYI that there's a few phantom deleted files from the last week still in the cache - we will have this fixed by tonight.

Front site is going to be offline tonight starting at 10PM EDT for maintenance and performance upgrades. Shouldn't be more than a few hours. Thanks for your patience.

Very happy/relieved to announce that we have finished moving the domain to a better DNS registrar for our needs, which should ensure that the short outage we had two weeks ago will never happen again. This should be the most exciting thing we will ever have to tell you about the DNS registrar.

Early this morning, we received an email from @namecheap.com that the domain neocities.org was being suspended because of a court order from New Delhi, India (a jurisdiction we don't operate in), which was for an unrelated court order about a sports streaming site on a different domain.

Please accept our apologies for this outage. We will be doing everything in our power to restore the domain and ensure this doesn't happen again.

UPDATE: The domain has been restored. We are working on checking everything and making sure no issues were caused by the outage, but the front site and subdomain sites should be working again. Thanks for your patience.

We are already on the phone with an enterprise domain management company and will be moving to a different registrar soon, but we can't even transfer the domain out of Namecheap until they remove the suspension, so either way we're still stuck for now waiting for Namecheap to do something here.

The internet is increasingly becoming dangerous to operate on because of crazy laws and orders like this. A bunk legal complaint in one country, which we aren't even based in, aimed at one alleged infringement issue, has just been converted into infrastructure-level damage against an entire platform

So the legal firm that sent the complaint -and- us are both trying to get Namecheap to unsuspend the domain, but as of this writing, they have not responded to any of the requests and we are trying all means to get them to escalate this to a higher priority.

At this point, we have no control over this, only Namecheap does, and Namecheap are the only people that can fix this mistake and unsuspend the domain. Until then, there's nothing we can do to restore service to the subdomain sites and the front site (the custom domain sites still work).

Our domain, neocities.org, was NOT listed in the provided court order document, but Namecheap took the report at face value and suspended the domain anyways, and told us "We have to resolve the issue with the complainant in order to have the domain unsuspended." As in, a legal firm in New Delhi.

Amazingly, we were somehow able to contact their office even though it's midnight in New Delhi, and they acknowledged that taking down neocities.org was a mistake and not what they wanted, and told me they are going to email Namecheap to try to get them to restore the site as well.

We're working on the DNS outage. It's not technical - someone is trying to legally attack us and Namecheap took down the domain. More details later.

Our upstream block storage is having issues, we're taking the front site down temporarily as a precaution. Will update this thread when things are running again.

Things seem to be stabilizing, so we've re-enabled the front site. We'll continue to monitor. Thanks for your patience.

Update on Bing: The block seems to have been removed! Sites are slowly starting to re-index. Special thanks to @ashleybelanger.bsky.social for this really helpful article and visibility. We now have a direct contact at Microsoft we're communicating with to see how this can be prevented again.

Neocities sites are slowwwwwly popping back up in Bing results, I'm told, but this remains one of the weirdest exchanges I've had with a tech company, where Microsoft admitted there was an issue but wouldn't connect directly to resolve it. arstechnica.com/tech-policy/...

Bing has blocked neocities and all user subdomains from its search index. We’ve spent months trying to resolve this through official channels and gotten nowhere. Until this gets resolved, we are recommending that people do not use Bing. Blog post with details: blog.neocities.org/blog/2026/01...

Today we launched a more robust cache purger that should reduce the number of rare/occasional "missed" site updates. It's been well tested, but when things change bugs can happen, so if a site file isn't updating let us know, and the usual apologies in advance for any issues related to this.

Also wanted to dispel a rumor: it was never an issue with DNS or how busy a site is, it was always the purger. The purger doesn't use DNS. If for some reason a purge doesn't happen, try changing the file slightly (add a space, etc.) and saving it. But this tempfix shouldn't be necessary anymore. 🤞

FYI, WebDAV is currently not working, a fix is in progress. When we migrated to new code the old WebDAV code became deprecated, and it's kind of a crazy protocol so it's taking longer than expected. Apologies.

HEADS UP: in the next hour we're resetting all login sessions, so at some point everyone will be logged off and need to log back in. Be sure to save your work! If you get logged out with unsaved changes: open another tab to login, and then go back to the editor tab and saving will work again.

"The purge" of people that have been logged in for 7 years with a password they wrote on a burger wrapper in their car with ketchup, and they have no idea which of the 500 disposable email accounts they used for the password reset.. trust me I haven't been looking forward to this 😅

Nothing bad happened - this is a planned upgrade to the session cookie encryption so it's stronger, and also to make it easier to revoke logins if sites get hacked. Apologies for the inconvenience!
