I finally had the opportunity to work on ray tracing with Metal 3 and want to share a little demo clip. 🪩 For now my ray tracing is not fast enough for @neontrip.app on Vision Pro, but I have some optimization ideas to test out. 🔬👨‍💻 Stay tuned! 🎛️

Next update of Neon Trip - Wallpaper submitted for review. 🤞 Introduces ‘Multi Display Wallpaper’ – Automatically combine your displays for one huge wallpaper image. You can even fine tune the layout using a handy inset slider and by positioning the crop frames manually.

Upcoming feature - spoiler alert! 🫣 You will be able apply the wallpaper cropped and sliced for your very own multi display arrangement. There’s still some UI adjustments and testing to be done, but the basic functionality is there. ☕️ #synthwave #retro #macOS

Latest news with Neon Trip - Wallpaper. Just submitted for review again. A video captured on the Vision Pro is no go 🛑 (I was perhaps too eager to show off the “killer feature” 😆) I used the occasion to also fix the handling of back and forth between physical and virtual displays. #Ultrawide #mac

While waiting for the review, I have discovered an “unfortunate behavior” of the app / the way wallpapers are treated on macOS. I can make it nicer in an update, but it makes me a bit worried since this is a paid app. I’ll release the update quickly no matter what… #buildInPublic

I got rid of the remaining (known) bugs and uploaded images and videos. Then I realized the videos have audio of me clicking and music in the background. QuickTime has a “Remove Audio”. Nice! Upload to App Store Connect… 🚫 “This file has corrupt or missing audio” *Sigh* #buildInPublic

Now I only need images for App Store. I wonder if they’ll allow captures from Apple Vision Pro showing the Ultrawide Mac Virtual Display? Perhaps I’ll wait until an update to increase likelihood of approval? On the other hand Ultrawide and Wide wallpapers was the whole point. #visionOS #macOS

I’ve been improving app behavior, layout and handling of focus etc… A super simple website and support form is up in preparation for submission to Mac App Store review… neontrip.app/wallpaper/ I might improve that a bit while waiting for review. Now back to actual app improvements and… the icon!

It’s getting late here. 🌒 There are still some minor usability issues to work out and I just realized the app has no icon yet 🤦‍♂️ I’ll go to bed now and rise early tomorrow. ☀️ I will dream of electric neon sheep. 💤

After trying many different ways of setting color space/mode etc. for the wallpaper, it turned out that the preview image only “looked ok” as shown on the dark background. 🙄 I had forgotten that the render output has an alpha component. 🫥 My initial conversion worked fine on a correct image! 😅

I fixed some issues with the scaling and cropping, but there is still some sort of pixel format / color space issue. The preview in the app is fine, but when used as a wallpaper the colors are way off. Nobody said this was going to be easy… #indiedev #buildinpublic
