I talked to Mayday exec producer Alex Bystram about how a fan of the Canadian air crash investigation show helped avert disaster on FlyDubai - and the show's inspiration of Nathan Fielder's The Rehearsal S2. Brad Bradford being graceful in defeat. Nice concession speech about the city coming together. His kids are cute. Impressive campaign really. Got more votes than John Tory did in 2022. But Olivia Chow got more votes than any Toronto mayoral candidate ever.

That was not really close in the end. Olivia Chow currently at 54.04%, Brad Bradford 41.21%. 1405 of 1431 polls reporting Chow won with 37% of the vote in the 2023 mayoral by-eelction and 269,372 raw votes. She's have doubled her vote count, currently 522,139.

Having seen the weirdly formatted Toronto ballot now, I see why some people were concerned by the two Chows up for mayor. First names aren’t right next to the last names. Your eyes have to go over and then down a bit to find the right oval. Not great design, TBH.

Just learned today that Calgary Opera's administrative and rehearsal building is named the Mamdani Opera Centre. Named after local "polarizing" property developer Riaz Mamdani who once survived a daytime shooting in his Rolls Royce in part because a bullet hit a titanium credit card in his pocket.

In one day, two politicians - Bolsonaro in Brazil and Vucic in Serbia - with ties to Trump have lost surprise elections thanks to high turnout. The rise of the international far-right is not inevitable.

Oh, no. I went to see Coyote vs Acme at the multiplex at Eglinton and Warden and he showed up to introduce the movie to his hometown crowd. Such a great thing to do.

Social Credit won a B.C. general election in 1952 with an interim leader from Alberta who did not contest a seat. After the election, the Social Credit caucus picked W.A.C. Bennett as leader.

If Wikipedia is right, this is the first time a party run by an interim leader has won an election in Canada. Who knows what this something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue party will be in a year. Good luck, BC! www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/artic...

“What a joy it is to report, then, that Tessa Virtue’s solo was not only exuberant and entertaining, but showcased a grounded facility with modern dance. The Unruly Heart hit just the right resonant note between earnest and tongue-in-cheek.” www.theglobeandmail.com/culture/stag...

Currently at a kids party in a Toronto park wondering why we need 1000 more cops when one has been just idling his car next to the playground while checking his phone for the last hour.

Crime is down. Toronto is objectively a safe place. Why does Bradford want us scared? www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/artic...

Eby looks like he’s going to go down for making one of the all time Canadian political blunders.

RIP Tom Skerritt. Picket Fences landed on TV at the only time in my life when it could have become one of my favourite shows. Friday night is no death slot when you're 11-14 years old. 🫣 BREAD WILL WALK, a scary short animated film, directed by Alex Boya, is now available for free streaming on the NFB platform. All roles in the film are voiced by Jay Baruchel! ⬇️ Capsule review by @nestruck.bsky.social in the G&M!

When you look at where the advance voting was, what age demo Chow's support is highest and lowest in... I'm beginning to think Bradford's going to win by five or six point. Hard to believe Chow's campaign is co-chaired by Andrew Bevan who co-directed the Liberal comeback federally last year.

Josh Matlow, Charter City champion, for mayor! Alas, not on the ballot this time.

Matt Elliott@graphicmatt.com

My @thestar.com column: One reason this mayoral election hasn’t seen many big ideas? Blame Doug Ford, and his constant interference in Toronto issues There is one big idea that could change all of this, though. We should be talking about making Toronto a Charter City www.thestar.com/opinion/cont...

Now that's comic timing: @thestaceymcg.bsky.social was in MAGA make-up shooting a Katie Zacharia sketch on Friday when the press secretary got fired. She and her co-stars improvised a new ending - and it was up online that evening. Over 16m views on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok by Monday!

That’s already enough views that it would crack the top ten in the first half of the year. Should keep up momentum until Halloween I expect - we’ll see where it lands.

I missed a request not to mention what was at the end of the second episode that came with the screeners... and printed it in my mini-review (preceded by a spoiler alert). My bad. But it seems self-defeating of CBS to ask critics not to mention the hookiest element of the series.

That's just terrible - this guy kicked up a big fuss about police targeting him as a journalist. He crowdfunded tens of thousands for his defence. What a disgrace to his profession.
