To FInland! And into the wilds of a war that seems to never end in the far north. This week's News of the War comes with a light helping of winter smocking and a troubled nation. FINLAND. 🇫🇮 @merrynwalters.uk @andyaitch.bsky.social linktr.ee/NewsOfTheWar

If you hadn't seen it, you wouldn't believe it. The news of the war reports - at length - on Finland's obsession with sauna. In the middle of the woods. In the middle of a war.

The trouble is - as The Sphere points out - Finland is in the wrong place. A springboard to the Germans, a natural next step for the Soviets, and a source of minerals and resources for everyone. Poor old Finland.

Remarkable, how much of this war happened 'up front'. And how backward Russia was at coming forward to admit yes, yes, it had invaded Finland. Column inches of denial point the way forwards... linktr.ee/NewsOfTheWar

We knew they were important, but we didn't realise by how many inches - column inches. It's the News of the War, and we're in our Less Expected Destinations series, we're heading to New Zealand @merrynwalters.uk @andyaitch.bsky.social

Two points if you name him. A bonus point, if you can tell us what he did. The joy of News of the War, is we come across all kinds of people who aren't necessarily talked about much today. linktr.ee/NewsOfTheWar

**draws breath** This was quite something. Reported widely, and exceptionally carefully, the events that followed an uprising in a prisoner of war camp - and it's not what you think. This week's episode is a blinder. linktr.ee/NewsOfTheWar

Poring over the periodicals during the war, you expected to see illustrations when the photograph chappies weren't there. Much of the art we've discovered in News of the War is worth more than a passing glance. linktr.ee/NewsOfTheWar @andyaitch.bsky.social @merrynwalters.uk
