Combating antisemitism and protecting democracy

Yet another example of Trump's long history of saying that Jews are "disloyal" or shameful if they do not vote for him or his chosen candidates. According to him, one can only be a real American Jew if they support Israel specifically by voting for him and his picks.

Trump on El-Sayed: "Any Jewish person that supports this guy should be ashamed of themselves. I'll tell you right now, you should never speak to them again. I'm polling at 99% in Israel. I cannot understand how anybody who's Jewish can even think about voting for this guy."

We once again remind the president that American Jews don't need to be "loyal" to a candidate or party to be both American and Jewish and it's unconscionable to say they should be "ashamed" or cast out for failing to do so.

Constitutional protections matter. Due process, free speech, and equal protection guard every community, especially those who have historically been targeted. Defending them is how we defend ourselves and our neighbors. Strong democracy keeps us safe. It’s up to us to keep it safe.

Voter intimidation and claiming some people’s votes shouldn’t count can not be viewed as “politics as usual.” Deploying federal agents to polling stations to scare off potential voters doesn’t actually protect the vote. It’s an attack on the system that protects all of us.

To be clear, democracy doesn't erase antisemitism. But independent courts, a free press, equal protection, and the power to vote out those who threaten these safety nets give us recourse. Those tools only work if elections are free, fair, and trusted.

That’s why election security and protecting our democracy are Jewish issues. Secure elections mean every eligible voter can vote, every vote is counted, and the results are certified. That’s a value every party should share and fight to protect.

This lesson dates to our country’s founding. A foundational moment in American religious liberty is George Washington’s letter to the Jewish community of Newport, Rhode Island, saying the US government “gives bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance.”

The promise of Jewish security is tied to the strength of the constitution and courts developed in that same era. Over centuries of American history Jewish freedom has been protected by our constitutional rights, including equal citizenship, freedom of worship, and equal protection under law.

In addition to the antisemitic conspiracy of Jews trying to corrode society, this fits another pattern: using antisemitic tropes to deflect and project blame. It’s important to recognize the playbook.

When people in power invoke age-old antisemitic tropes to cast Jewish people as a threat to society while positioning themselves as the ones exposing the danger, we must call it out.

Musk repeatedly spreads Soros-related conspiracy theories, including frequently comparing him to the X-Men villain Magneto, who, like Soros, is a Holocaust survivor. The implication? Both Soros and Magneto are shadowy puppet masters secretly manipulating the world.

Musk himself has accused Soros of wanting to “end Western civilization,” a take on the antisemitic "cultural Marxism" trope that paints Jews as undermining Western society through a planned culture war.

There is nothing inherently antisemitic about criticizing a billionaire’s political spending or philanthropy. But casting a Jewish man as the hidden hand behind global unrest isn’t criticism — it’s the age-old antisemitic conspiracy theory that Jews secretly control the world.

Antisemitic caricatures of George Soros frequently portray him as a “puppet master” secretly controlling government, media, the economy, and even migration. These tropes are a modern manifestation of the age-old antisemitic myth that Jews are conspiring to control the world.

Time and time again, Trump defaults to antisemitic slurs and tropes. It's not a fluke. It's who he is. And he can't claim ignorance on the antisemitic roots and impact of calling someone a "shylock-type guy" because he used that excuse when he used the term last year.

nbcnews.comTrump uses antisemitic slur in defending Sen. Roger Marshall at rally in KansasTrump had used the term during a speech last year, leading to backlash. He said at the time that he wasn’t aware of the word’s antisemitic connotations.

We are horrified by this plot and relieved no one was hurt. We stand with Hindu and Indian Americans. No one should fear being murdered at prayer. The white supremacist behind it targeted Jews and Black people too, as often happens. Showing up for others is how we protect ourselves.

This was out of line. Criticizing foreign investment and real estate, including Israeli investment, is fair game. But it's not fair game to frame Israeli investments as part of a broader narrative about global domination and the root of society’s problems.

The new White House Press Secretary, Katie Zacharia, claimed abortion pills contain the same chemicals used in Nazi extermination camps. 1. This is false. 2. Invoking Nazi atrocities to attack abortion access politicizes and weaponizes Holocaust memory to justify a crackdown on reproductive rights.

Three years ago today, on October 7, 2023, Hamas invaded Israel and carried out a deadly, horrific attack, murdering around 1,200 people and taking over 250 hostages. Families were torn apart in a single morning. We remember every one of them.

There must be no equivocation in mourning those killed and expressing solidarity with those who lost loved ones. Pain and sympathy are not zero-sum, and everyone should find the space in their hearts to hold these victims and their families.

"If Jewish safety is the goal, engagement should be part of the strategy." In a new open letter on @timesofisrael.com, Nexus Project President Jonathan Jacoby asks ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt to reconsider the ADL’s response to the Mamdani administration’s new strategy to combat antisemitism.

This appears to be another example of an individual, this time an Israeli Jew, being targeted for anti-Israel advocacy. Withholding or removing someone's legal status over a constitutionally protected right to protest doesn't make Jews more safe. It erodes the protections we have long relied on.

This plan shows that Mayor Mamdani has listened to the concerns of Jewish New Yorkers — and put forward meaningful commitments and real funding to help keep them safe. Our full statement on NYC's first-ever municipal strategy to combat antisemitism:

Bypassing Congress to levy massive fines on universities while cutting funding to the very office responsible for protecting Jewish students and faculty shows it was never about Jewish safety, but about using that safety as a weapon to carry out their anti-democratic agenda.

Nearly half of ADL's 2025 Audit was tied to Israel. A new report from NCAR breaks down what's in that number, from Jews harassed or attacked over Israel's actions to public expressions of hostility toward Israel that ADL considers antisemitic, like 'From the River to the Sea.'
