In this new perspective piece, we share some thoughts about the evidence base for evidence-based conservation (EBC). Does it really improve conservation outcomes and cost-effectiveness, and how do we know? Let's hold the EBC paradigm to the same standards it advocates! doi.org/10.1002/2688...

doi.orgOn the evidence for evidence‐based conservationWe explore the evidence base underlying evidence-based conservation (EBC). Drawing on varied examples, we suggest that EBC is often (but not always) a justified investment to improve conservation out...

Quintessential Trump: In 2025, Trump axed the program to combat New World Screwworm, stating that they had "saved" $1.5 million a year. In 2026, the Trump announces a $1 billion emergency program to combat the Screwworm outbreak. $1 billion would have funded the old program for 667 years.

This was a fun project to be part of! Key takeaway: Data archiving rates pretty good (but <100%), code archiving rates worse (35%) 😮 Key actions for authors: Think about archiving throughout project life cycle. Archive data and code properly, in appropriate repositories. doi.org/10.1111/2041...

New World Economic Forum Global Risks data provides a stark warning: While short-term crises dominate headlines, "Biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse" jumps to the 2nd highest risk over the 10-year horizon. The long term is sooner than we think. Science-based policies via IPBES are crucial.🌍

Have you worked on / do you know of a conservation project that changed what it was doing after looking at the evidence or undertaking a test? Replies welcome below, or on Bill's original post. Thanks!

William (Bill) Sutherland@billsutherland.bsky.social

For a highly prestigious publication a journalist is looking for conservation projects that changed what they were doing after looking at the evidence or undertaking a test. Please say working on a project that would be a good example and would like some fame. Can be anywhere in the world. Thanks.

A landscape mosaic approach – interspersing paludiculture types, and other land uses, in space and time – stands out as a way to balance positive and negative impacts. There is also a clear need for adaptive management: monitoring impacts of paludiculture and responding appropriately. 📷 Nigel Taylor

Our report provides an overview of possible impacts of paludiculture on the natural environment (soils, hydrology, water quality, biodiversity, landscape character and heritage). We also outline management options to minimise negative and maximise positive impacts + highlight open research qs.

Paludiculture is the productive use of wet and rewetted peatlands. It’s gaining attention in England (and more widely) as a land use option that can extend the commercial life of drained lowland peatlands whilst simultaneously reducing greenhouse gas emissions. 📷 Hannes Grobe CC BY-SA 4.0
