Kat at Sail Loft Studio

Hi! I’m Kat. My partner, Scott and I specialize in woodturned, hand-painted mushrooms and lathe-turned boxes. We proudly harvest and process our own wood sustainably and locally. This is my unofficial showcase for what we create at our home here at Sail Loft Studios. #scottishcrafts #mushrooms

Anyone missing a dinghy?

More fanart! This is Nerilka from Anne McCaffrey’s “Nerilka’s Story,” which I just finished. Highly recommend the whole series if you like unique worldbuilding, dragons, sci-fi/fantasy. This is from my sketchbook, hence the wonky border. #pern #dragonridersofpern #tradart #dragon #illustration

Instead of wasting electricity to light the hallway at night, we’ve been using one of our tea jars as a nightlight for those 3am bathroom trips. The glow lasts several hours. This was taken at 2:30pm, for ref. UV torch used, not LED. #glowinthedark #handmade #woodturned #woodturning

We’re battening down the hatches today as a huge storm’s coming over Scotland. Stay safe out there. In other news, I have some more art to show soon, and here’s a tiny shroom we made. #handmade #woodturning #mushrooms #scottishcrafts #shrooms #goblincore #cottagecore #fairycore #scottishmade

Another flowery mushroom, hand painted by me, turned and finished by Scott. It’s about an inch and half tall. #handmade #woodcraft #woodturning #mushrooms #scottishcrafts #shrooms #goblincore #cottagecore #fairycore #scottishmade #sailloftstudio

A tiny shroom for your perusal. Forgive the glare. Many of our items aren’t on our website yet, so if you’re interested in any you see here, let us know. #handmade #woodcraft #woodturning #mushrooms #scottishcrafts #shrooms #goblincore #cottagecore #fairycore #scottishmade #sailloftstudio

I don’t normally do reposts, but…

Tea jars! At some point I’ll take a photo of the one I stole for our kitchen. I’ve got a cold and no energy to take new photos just yet. So you may have seen these before. #handmade #woodcraft #woodturning #scottishcrafts #latheturned #decor #interiordecor #sailloftstudio #kitchenware #teajars

Here’s my favorite live-edge hazel shroom recently. The grain at the top’s rather splendid. I can’t recall the fancy term for it, but I’m sure to once I post it. #handmade #woodcraft #woodturning #mushrooms #scottishcrafts #shrooms #goblincore #cottagecore #fairycore #scottishmade #sailloftstudio

Some tinies for today. I need to get around to taking more shroom photos, but am helping to restore the ceiling of a Victorian flat at the moment and lack the free time. #handmade #woodturning #mushrooms #scottishcrafts #shrooms #goblincore #cottagecore #fairycore #scottishmade #sailloftstudio

I took category photos for the website yesterday. These are our boxes & jars. The bottom three are new. My favorite is the unicorn sparkle box on the right, originally meant to be a spice jar. #handmade #woodcraft #woodturning #scottishcrafts #latheturned #interiordecor #sailloftstudio #kitchenware

Keep in mind that you can—and should—reflect the light, even in a world full of shadows. Stay weird, stay colorful, stay kind, and shine on.

I don’t know how I feel about this one, but it sure is beetle-y. Very mixed media on sycamore. #handmade #woodcraft #woodturning #scottishcrafts #latheturned #decor #interiordecor #sailloftstudio

One of my unicorn paint jobs. Live-edge hazel with acrylic paint and sparkles of various natures. #handmade #woodcraft #woodturning #mushrooms #scottishcrafts #shrooms #goblincore #cottagecore #fairycore #scottishmade #sailloftstudio

Fairy on a woodblock, acrylic and alcohol markers + ink. So much better than fumbling around with marker paper. 6”x3” (14cmx8cm) #fairy #traditionalart #markerart #illustration #fantasy #fairycore #faeries #fae #faerie #handmade #tradart

We’re working I’m on another batch in order to be ready for our first craft fair, and I just had to share this tiny WIP guy. Pen for size comparison. #handmade #woodcraft #woodturning #mushrooms #scottishcrafts #shrooms #goblincore #cottagecore #fairycore #scottishmade #sailloftstudio

This was supposed to be a container for our kitchen utensils, but the shape’s not what I wanted & it’s a bit too heavy, so I gave it the Ancient Roman treatment. I guess you could store your gladii in it. #handmade #woodcraft #woodturning #scottishcrafts #latheturned #decor #sailloftstudio

A non-wooden set of mushrooms for your perusal. I’ve no idea what they are, but they’re saved from the woodpile for a while. #mushrooms #fungi #shrooms #fungus

I’d plead for someone to stop me, but my inner eighties child is responding to this method of healing. Pretty much every-fricking-media I own on a sycamore shroom. #handmade #woodcraft #woodturning #mushrooms #scottishcrafts #shrooms #bling #fairycore #scottishmade #sailloftstudio #psychedelic

Bit of an experiment with this one. Tea jar? Flour container? It’s very pale ash, and you can see the grain in good light. #handmade #woodcraft #woodturning #scottishcrafts #latheturned #decor #interiordecor #sailloftstudio #kitchenware #teajar #landscape

Despite using paper appropriate for art markers, I’ve struggled to get the results I’ve wanted & ruined some pics. After this one, I’m going back to doing art on wood as I have for decades. If it was good enough for medieval iconographers, it’s good enough for me. #illustration #pagan #pagansrt

Spalting’s a fancy word for tree rot. A little woodturning blasphemy: I don’t much like it. But I’m learning to appreciate it occasionally, like in the green guy here. (See the webbed lines) #woodcraft #woodturning #mushrooms #scottishcrafts #goblincore #cottagecore #fairycore #scottishmade

Pinkies! #handmade #woodcraft #woodturning #mushrooms #scottishcrafts #shrooms #goblincore #cottagecore #fairycore #scottishmade #witchy #sailloftstudio

We have business cards now! I’m so excited! #handmade #woodcraft #woodturning #scottishcrafts #latheturned #decor #interiordecor #sailloftstudio #scotland #smallbusiness

We stopped by The Curios Crow in Dunoon yesterday to say hi to Jan, owner of the best curiosity shop in Argyll & Bute. Our shrooms can be found among the many treasures there, and if you’re ever in town, be sure to stop by and take a look! #curioscrow #scottishshops #sailloftstudios #mushrooms

One last for today! Some more lovely-harvested shrooms made from Dunoon wood! The green one glows in the dark. #handmade #woodcraft #woodturning #mushrooms #scottishcrafts #shrooms #goblincore #cottagecore #fairycore #scottishmade

The orange vase, turned and stained by Scott, deserved a second look in better lighting. Stain on Dunoon birch. #handmade #woodcraft #woodturning #scottishcrafts #latheturned #decor #interiordecor #sailloftstudio

Some of our trippier wooden shrooms to make your acquaintance. Mixed media on Dunoon sycamore. #handmade #woodcraft #woodturning #mushrooms #scottishcrafts #shrooms #goblincore #cottagecore #fairycore #scottishmade #witchy #trippy #sailloftstudio

Here’s a group shot of some of our magical mushrooms! Do you prefer group shots or singles? #handmade #woodcraft #woodturning #mushrooms #scottishcrafts #shrooms #goblincore #cottagecore #fairycore #scottishmade #witchy #witchcorr #sailloftstudio

This is one of Scott’s creations, from start to finish including the paint job. I think he did an excellent job. #handmade #woodcraft #woodturning #scottishcrafts #latheturned #decor #interiordecor #sailloftstudio #woodenbox

I like shiny splatter effects. Sycamore shroom with mixed media. #handmade #woodcraft #woodturning #mushrooms #scottishcrafts #shrooms #goblincore #cottagecore #fairycore #scottishmade

Here are a couple of shrooms from our latest batch. Sometimes, though rarely, the grain on sycamore’s too good not to show. #handmade #woodcraft #woodturning #mushrooms #scottishcrafts #shrooms #goblincore #cottagecore #fairycore #scottishmade #witchy #toadstool

Wee yellow hazel mushroom we coppiced a while ago. When cut back, even down to bare ground, hazel regrows. Folk belief says it bestows wisdom, prophecy, & poetic inspiration. #handmade #woodcraft #woodturning #mushrooms #scottishcrafts #shrooms #goblincore #cottagecore #fairycore #scottishmade

And lest I forget, the bookshelves.

My welsh dresser and the new, partially-.finished hallway cupboard meant to hold bath towels have been appropriated for other use. Also, can you spot the creepy deer?

Different lighting makes for different coloring. This little sycamore plum jar flashes. #handmade #woodcraft #woodturning #scottishcrafts #latheturned #decor #interiordecor #sailloftstudio

This has been harrowing to finish. In my ignorant bliss, I’d no idea acrylic marker paper HATES other media. It made my alcohol markers & linework inks smear. But six days later, I’m done. Menolly, from the Dragonsong series by Anne McCaffrey. #pern #menolly #dragonsong #dragonridersofpern #fanart

My inner eighties child likes this color combo. Sycamore shroom, acrylics, inks, iridescent powders. #handmade #woodcraft #woodturning #mushrooms #scottishcrafts #shrooms #goblincore #cottagecore #fairycore #scottishmade #pagan #witchy

More shot glasses. Sometimes I choose to paint the insides, sometimes I make a mess and am forced to do so. #handmade #woodcraft #woodturning #scottishcrafts #latheturned #decor #shotglasses

Sycamore tea jars we made recently! I nicked one similar to these for our kitchen. #handmade #woodcraft #woodturning #scottishcrafts #latheturned #decor #interiordecor #teajar

I’ve spilled so much expensive ink today. Mute it if you don’t want your sensibilities offended.

Me, painting one of many shrooms in our new batch. I’m still a bit camera-shy.

Even if you’re not into woodturning, there’s something ASMR-satisfying about seeing wood shavings fly. Scott’s making shrooms on this rainy Scottish Sunday. #woodturning #handmade #mushroom #scottishcrafts

Some fancy mushroom dudes from our latest batch. It IS shroom season, you know. #handmade #woodcraft #woodturning #mushrooms #scottishcrafts #shrooms #goblincore #cottagecore #fairycore #scottishmade #witchcore #witchy #sailloftstudiocreations

More plum jars! They’re all sycamore. It’s a pity the camera can’t catch the grain-flash of the green one. Hubs sanded and polished it to a high sheen. #handmade #woodcraft #woodturning #scottishcrafts #latheturned #decor #interiordecor #kitchenware #sailloftstudiocreations

Proof that lighting makes all the difference. One of our sycamore plum jars, painted rather effusively by me. #handmade #woodcraft #woodturning #scottishcrafts #latheturned #decor #interiordecor #sycamore #sailloftstudiocreations #woodturned

And this is why Scott doesn’t really want me near his lathe. (We have two.) Imagine if I’d been using crimson inks and paints today.

Two of my favorites. Normally, there’s not much texture to our shrooms, but I got a little over-enthusiastic with the orange one and it’s got a pleasing tactile feel. Sycamore. #handmade #woodcraft #woodturning #mushrooms #scottishcrafts #shrooms #goblincore #cottagecore #fairycore #scottishmade
