Building Phare.io to bankroll my peanut butter addiction. I build things with Laravel, eat plants, and race triathlons.

Maintaining a side project alive can be so damn hard, there are so many times when I wanted to quit or not spend my weekend fixing some random bug. But I also learned so much from building it and from the feedback of the thousands of Phare users ✌️

It's the only side project where I forced myself to continue after the honeymoon phase instead of jumping on something else. It still doesn't make me nearly enough money to compensate for all the hard work, but it's been growing steadily for the past year, which is encouraging.

Found some screenshots from the first release, it's always a struggle to design a screen for a new product, and you don't have enough things to fill the space, and now I have the exact opposite problem πŸ˜…

Making new features is starting to be challenging, new screens, add linked states on existing pages, make API endpoints, make Terraform data and resources, write documentation, create a landing page, and ensure everything works well together.

🚧 Scheduled Maintenance Windows One of the most requested feature of the past few months is finally here, whether you're upgrading databases, shipping breaking API changes, or rebooting a server, keeping your users in the loop before and during downtime makes all the difference.

Weird month overall, less traffic than earlier this year, and lost a few non-paying users due to an ongoing incident with Phare's hosting provider. Paid customers did not churn, so there's that, and I passed €300 MRR 😎

It was all doable, but exposed some interesting gaps in Paddle's API along the way. The implementation has been running in production for 3 months now without issues. If you're building metered billing on Paddle, I wrote up my findings and the workarounds I landed on for a clean implementation.

While I was at it, I wanted to improve the billing experience for my customers with calendar-month billing cycles, on top of the existing flat subscription + metered billing that define Phare's pricing.
