The idea of "proficiens" plays a surprisingly large role in the secondary literature on Lucan, where it was supposed to characterise Pompey's portrayal. Surprising, because Lintott had noted in one short paragraph in 1971 that this was based on a 180 degree misreading of Seneca (CQ 21 p. 504-5).

New pope selection coming. I'm rembering a lunch conversation with Catholic colleagues when Cardinal Ratzinger was chosen. This was Munich, and they had strong opinions about him. I said, "There must be something good you can say." Brief, gloomy pause. "He's very old."

Oddly, I thought I had the first of those settings on already, but when I checked, it was off. Could the choice have got lost in some update?

As Bluesky has grown, I've seen a lot of backsliding on alt text. Please try to be considerate to others and include alt text with all of your images. It helps everyone. Indeed, in the "accessibility" setting in Bluesky you can set it to make sure you add alt text, which is a useful thing to do.

A riddle from 1994 (but the answer hasn't changed). I'll post the answer later if nobody guesses. tempus edax rerum? sed et est, qui tempora mandat. legibus hic versis post mortem vivit egetque lustra per omnia adhuc vita, dum crescit in aevum.

A new fascicle in the open access version of the Thesaurus linguae latinae: thesaurus.badw.de/tll-digital/... That brings us up from "renuo" to the start of "repressio". The print version (always a few years ahead) currently reaches to "resurgo".

Our neighbour, the Marstall: regius hic equiti munitur circus equoque ut recte ille iubere hic iussa capessere discat The royal riding school here stands For rider and for steed, That one can learn to give commands, The other learn to heed.

Tradition at the Thesaurus linguae Latinae (which looks out on the Marstall) says that when they were putting the inscription up after post war reconstruction, someone on our team spotted that they had made some mistake in the order and put them right.
