The Between Two Cairns fellas asked me to run a game of Perils & Princesses!

Yochai Gal@yochaigal.bsky.social

In a very special bonus "actual play" of Between Two Cairns, @outridercreative.bsky.social leads @bradkerr.net @betterlegends.bsky.social and me through a spider-infested game of Perils & Princesses! Join our patreon to have a listen. www.patreon.com/betweentwoca...

I think the new English-language Sword World missed a really great opportunity to lean into the old school art of the original. Anyone else not really a fan of polished anime look? I just find it to be bland and lacking personality.

Since I know you're not going to watch it, let me break down the action in the sick-ass trailer for Baywatch and relate it to RPG writing. It got me PUMPED for playing some R'lyehwatch! It's a nice day at the beach when a small plane swoops into a paraglider. As you might imagine, that's not good.

What can we learn about RPG writing from this? It certainly is action-packed, and it has two problems that needs to be solved at once which makes things interesting. It's also cool that the problem at hand isn't someONE to deal with, but rather an interesting situation.

Finally, the plane with lifeguard hanging on comes bursting through the surface of the ocean before they save the pilot with some CPR. "Welcome back," Hobie says to him, "we didn't want you to miss the boat ride!"

What is this thing missing? Well, if this was R'lyehwatch, there should have been some tentacled monstrosity keeping hold of the plane that had to be dealt with. Sure, people would say the show was "jumping the shark," but I think it would bring this 9/10 action up to 12/10.

This should probably come as no surprise, but of all of the industries I've worked in, RPG people are BY FAR the most competent at writing emails that convey the thoughts of the author. Same goes for reading comprehension. They put the effort in. That is, everyone EXCEPT ONE GUY.

But the icing on the cake? Literally the NEXT DAY I was speaking with another colleague, totally unrelated to the original conversation, who confided in me that the VERY SAME PERSON has just been shitty to them a DAY earlier! I'm not totally sure how we got here, but...

I guess the moral of the story is you can learn a lot about a person's character based on their emails. If they can't take the time to put effort into that simple task, they're probably going to think very little of you and treat you accordingly.

I asked, "like something they'd get cancelled for if it came out?" And the answer was yes. Apparently, colleague will no longer work with the poor emailer because they know of two things that would get them cancelled. (Note: Just shitty, not illegal.) First, I'm glad I wasn't taking crazy pills...

The thought had crossed my mind that he only acted that way towards me. Second, screw this person for living up (really "down") to my expectations. Third, I'm pretty proud of colleague for forgoing their relationship & the benefits it could bring (the offender is in a position of some power)...

I would say "we all know that person," but I'm positive many of us actually know THAT person. As in, the same literal person. Recently, while having a conversation with a group of colleagues about how frustrating this person can be, one person asked, "have they done anything to you?"

Here's an example where I like the D&D 5e art better than the old school art. The newer art gives the impression that there is more to the harpy than a crone with wings. She seems to have feelings. I like the wing size and the way the human legs gradually transform into cool monster feet, too!

6 games in the last 7 days. Monday - played Dolmenwood Tuesday - played d&d 5e Wednesday - GMed R'lyehwatch (playtest) Friday - GMed Shadowdark (ravenloft), played Wanderhome Saturday - played Mothership (another bug hunt) Pretty great week I'd say.

It's awesome to see a publisher like @koboldpress.com diversify their offerings by getting into Shadowdark!

Me when the big reveal happens and it turns out our CY_BORG campaign is a computer simulation that our Dogs in the Vineyard characters are living through.

Tonight we are playing CY_BORG! My cyberpunk is named Zola Hekate. He’s a necropop bopper with too many rings and a day glo skull tattooed on his face. He rides a vintage motorcycle, has like a hundred throwing knives, a little surveillance drone, and a big armored trenchcoat. Also he wheezes.

I adapted this very fun, very weird, and VERY wet adventure so you can play it using Shadowdark! Go check it out!!!

WEIRD LITTLE FREAKS, a tournament adventure module by me and @betterlegends.bsky.social now has an official Shadowdark conversion by the great @nightnoon.games. Thank you Michael! www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/5...

This is my first time playing D&D 5e in about 3 years when this group switched to Pathfinder 2e. I've gotta stay, I prefer it so much more than pf2e. Somehow it seems to actually flow. We've even made it into a SECOND COMBAT ENCOUNTER IN THE SAME SESSION!!! 😯😯😯😯😯

You're doing a lot of doomscrolling for someone who has a bunch of unread RPG books on their shelf 👀

Am I the only one who assumed "everybody Wang Chung tonight" was a directive to perform a dance called "The Wang Chung" rather than the band just inserting their own name into their song? The name means "yellow bell," the 1st note in the Chinese classical music scale. This post is about an RPG.
