Before you toss a broken gadget, check iFixit. It has free repair guides for thousands of devices, rated by difficulty. Worst case, you learn the battery is glued in with the strength of a thousand suns, and now you know who to be mad at. πŸ”§

New York passed the first US electronics right-to-repair law in 2022, and more states followed. If you bought your toaster you should be allowed to fix it without a 'certified technician' and a $300 diagnostic fee... change my mind

IT helpdesk translation guide: 'Have you restarted it?' means 'I know you haven't.' 'Interesting' means 'this will take all afternoon.' 'Works on my end' means 'it's you.' Restart it anyway...It fixes more than anyone admits. (even me lol)

ADHD productivity app lifecycle: discover a new app, spend six hours setting it up, color-code everything, feel unstoppable, never open it again. I really need to KISS... and let it be boring, but I don't wanna. 🧠

The save icon is a 3.5-inch floppy disk, which held 1.44 MB. That's less than one HD photo from your phone. In 2026 an entire generation clicks a tiny shrine to a storage format they probably have never touched. πŸ’Ύ

Text-message 2 FA is better than nothing, but SIM swap scammers can talk a carrier into moving your number to their phone. For accounts that matter, use an authenticator app or a hardware key, and ask your carrier for a port-out PIN.

In 2024 Ubisoft shut down the servers for The Crew, and people who bought it could no longer play. That sparked the Stop Killing Games campaign, asking publishers to keep games playable after support ends. Buying shouldn't secretly mean renting.

Me: I'll install Linux to be more productive. Also me, three weeks later: on my ninth distro, tweaking a terminal theme I look at for 20 minutes a day. Productivity was the friends we made along the way.

In 2016 Juicero sold a Wi-Fi juicer for $699 that squeezed its own juice packs. Then reporters showed you could squeeze the packs by hand just as well. The company shut down the next year. oops. πŸ§ƒ

Nintendo's 1995 Virtual Boy was sold as portable, but you played it on a table stand with your face pressed into a red visor. Games could even pause themselves to make you take breaks. Nintendo took the hint and pulled it within about a year.

I have 84 tabs open because closing one feels like deleting a memory. Many browsers can save a whole window as a bookmark folder, so you can close all 84 without grieving. Will I ever open that folder? No. But I'll know it's there.

Your smart TV is probably watching what you watch. It's called ACR, automatic content recognition, and it fingerprints what's on screen to sell targeted ads. Look for 'viewing data' or 'ACR' in your TV's settings and turn it off & share this to spread the word. πŸ“Ί #privacy

Laptop repair step one: remove 14 screws, three hidden under rubber feet, one under a sticker that says 'warranty void if removed.' The FTC has warned companies those stickers likely break US warranty law. What do you think? #righttorepair

xkcd proved in 2011 that 'correct horse battery staple' beats P@ssw0rd1! by a mile. Size does matter. Pick 4+ random words or let a password manager generate something long. Just not that exact one. Every bruteforcer has it memorized now. 🐴

Apple once made a game console. The 1996 Bandai Pippin cost $599, ran a stripped-down Mac OS, and flopped so hard it regularly shows up on 'worst consoles ever' lists. Apple would rather you didn't bring it up.

Me: sets six alarms labeled 'meds,' 'seriously,' 'MEDS,' and 'HELLO??' My brain: dismisses all. Tip: put the meds somewhere physical, like next to your toothbrush. Your phone can't nag louder than a habit.

Vim has been around for over 30 years, and 'How do I exit Vim?' is still a legendary question among developers. The answer is Esc, then type :q and press Enter. Happy Monday! πŸ€“

In 2000 RadioShack handed out free CueCats: barcode scanners shaped like a cat, so you could scan a magazine ad to open a website you could have just typed. Each one had a serial number tied to you, so the cat also knew what you scanned. Ancestor of the QR code menu.

Your phone has an advertising ID so apps can recognize you across other apps. Here's how to delete them. Share with a friend and surely we can make ads slightly worse at stalking us. πŸ‘€

In 10 years, I hope we look back on how "we bought things but had no ownership of them" and we see how insane it was that we ever allowed these shenanigans.

news.slashdot.orgNew Video Game Law Proposed: 'If You Pay For It, You Own It'"When you pay for a game, you should own it," says U.S. Representative Ritchie Torres (D-NY), introducing a new bill to fight the practice of "a rental disguised as a sale". Kotaku reports: The fifth best-selling game of 2024 in the U.S. was NBA 2K25. Every year, fans dump hundreds of hours and hundreds of dollars into the grindy NBA basketball sim. But just a little over two years after its release, 2K Games confirmed it's already pulling the plug on it. The game will be delisted from digital storefronts on October 30. By January 1, 2027, online servers will go offline as well, making it impossible to play the most popular modes. A game millions paid $70 for will become mostly useless. Democratic Congressman Ritchie Torres wants to change that. "I think there should be a simple rule: if you pay for it, you own it," Torres told Kotaku in a phone interview this week. To make that the law of the land, the U.S. representative for New York's 15th congressional district since 2021 plans to introduce legislation in Congress called the Power To The Players Act. The bill would direct the Federal Trade Commission to create regulations protecting ownership rights for video games. Companies selling digital games would need to grant players more than just a license that can expire at any time, and games with online features would need to provide offline modes that still work even when servers eventually shut down... The Power To The Players Act noticeably leaves out other types of digital media like movies and music, though Terminator 2 and a bunch of other movie purchases were ripped from people's digital libraries earlier this year. Representative Torres "did not confirm if the bill will have any cosponsors," the article acknowledges, "or whether any of his Republican colleagues will sign on to support it." But players will see the bill's importance next month, the article points out, "when Grand Theft Auto 6 releases as just a download code in a box, giving fans no control over a purchase that starts at $80. Googled myself and a people-search site had my age, my old addresses, and a 'possible relative' who is my ex's mom. Most of these sites have an opt-out page buried in the footer, or at least they should...right?

If I'm forced to watch AI at least have it be like...a wiener puppy with a nose like a hot dog... That is begging for actual hot dogs at a table. Or the baby fighting eagles. None of this realistic crap.
