I am all about simulating data for writing and testing code but it is customary to use actual data when doing final analysis. That really is table stakes

How do you tell if authors fabricated their research results? Sometimes: they just tell you. Read, e.g., this caption carefully. Another banger of a post by my friend Nihar B. Shah on his blog, where he found at least 20+ such #ICLR2027 submissions: researchonresearch.blog/2026/10/20/s...

Okay hear me out: What if this season delivers both a Brewers World Series and Vikings Super Bowl Vikes don't even need to win

Got a new iPhone today. During the setup process, my old phone screen said “Finish on your new iPhone“ and like… yeah new tech is fun but it’s not *that* exciting

IMO this question shows how much different groups think we should build "a society guided by God's truth" more than anything about empathy I would put money that you'd see the same pattern if you replaced "empathy" with "love" or "capitalism" or "democracy"

This whole thread is excellent. I will add: To an extent, a degree of this magical thinking is... maybe helpful, sometimes? There are lots of things that seem like they should be impossible until people discover that they are not. SV has made many fortunes on those things.

For me, I think the line is when people go from telling aspirations to telling lies. It is, admittedly, not a very bright line.

Everyone makes mistakes in their jobs. But almost all of us can live happily knowing we've never delivered an ad for Wisconsin Agricultural Tourism, depicting the state as a red splotch on a license plate reading "LUV RAG"

Family: Well, what's gonna happen? Are they gonna die AGAIN? Kids these days are so fussy

Michael Hobbes@michaelhobbes.bsky.social

Another one. The premise: Young people are cutting off their parents for minor mistakes and misunderstandings. The lead anecdote: A woman severs ties with her family for refusing to get vaccinated before her wedding — to a man who *lost his mother and brother to COVID*

Workday: Hey you should update your emergency contact info Me: Okay sure, <opens window> Workday: What is your relationship to this person? I have "Other" Me: That's not right. <search>spouse Workday: ... Ex-spouse?

Let’s get you out of those wet clothes and into a dry martini Let’s get you out of those clean clothes and into a dirty martini Let’s get you out of those cold clothes and into a warm martini

Apple: SwiftUI and HealthKit mean you can quickly build apps on any platform that securely access your health data! Me: Okay can I enter my blood pressure using my computer? Apple: We also have iPhone Mirroring...

Going full mad scientist in my kitchen replicating how the U.S. Army printed orders and maps in the trenches of the Western Front… (Just a very normal research day.)

The state of enterprise security tooling is frankly baffling to me. We're still waiting on <vendor> for macOS 27 support three weeks after launch. They're waiting on <vendor> for SDK support somehow they broke filevault and firewall detection in *27; how I have no idea

it's not like macOS 27 (or 26, or 15, or...) came out of nowhere; the beta period was pretty long and the betas were quite stable. Having endpoint clients prepped for launch day (really _before_ launch day so customers can do testing) should be table stakes

Dear Senators: Before you bring your weird-ass conspiracy theory to the floor, paste it in to ChatGPT and ask "does this make sense, can you find any obvious holes"

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

🤡 Schmitt beclowns himself 🤡 Schmitt concocted an elaborate conspiracy theory that Smith traveled to Atl for a Hawks game and to collude with Fani Willis, & flashed his "evidence" before accusing Smith of perjury. There's just one problem -- his facts were totally wrong. Here's the whole sequence:

Genie: <raises eyebrow slyly> Master, what is your first wish? Me: I wish for world peace. <raises finger> But! I have some stipulations. I want you do this by killing everyone in the world except Steve from marketing. And don't just disappear them, have them literally die and decompose.

Me: And yes of course I am included. Kill me too. You too, buddy. Also I want you to put a note in Steve's pocket that says "YOUR MOVE, BITCH" Genie: ... master? Me: Did I stutter

it's weird, what things are cheap on Amazon/eBay/Etsy versus McMaster-Carr 3/8" O1 steel rod? Way cheaper from McMaster. (Yes, you'll pay shipping.) And my experience ordering tool steel from Amazon has been Not Great. "Annealed, except for the edges where we used a plasma cutter"

Eine schöne Bastel- und Malarbeit. Manchmal trägt Obelix den Hinkelstein. Manchmal ist Obelix der Hinkelstein. Dürfte nicht leicht gewesen sein, diesen Stein zu finden. #Asterix #Fanart

At Back to School night for my high school junior, her English teacher said something that has wedged in my brain: "We used to read novel in class, but so many kids said they just weren't readers, so now we do short stories and poetry"

and like Short stories and poetry are great. Genuinely! There's more to lit than novels. That's a good reason to teach those things on their merits! But doing it because kids "aren't readers?" Fuuuuuuuck that Basically no kids are "algebra-ers" and we teach algebra
