Next week, eight of our team are heading to Reykjavík for the Arctic Circle Assembly 2026 ❄️ Find us at the National Oceanography Centre booth throughout the event. 🌊

Climate change could alter the world's strongest seasonal upwelling system off Somalia's coast. New NOC-led research projects declining offshore productivity and fish biomass, with industrial fleets hit hardest while some coastal communities may remain resilient 🌊🐟 https://go.noc.ac.uk/zcnfk

🚨 New Paper 🚨 Nearly 300,000 km of coastline could be at risk from pollution linked to metal mines and mine waste sites. Research led by NOC’s Dr Adam Sproson identifies coastal hotspots most at risk, highlighting the need for prevention and monitoring. Read more: https://go.noc.ac.uk/hnvs6g

It might feel cooler on land, but the marine heatwave still persists around much of the UK 🌊🇬🇧 ⬇️ MHW conditions remain in southern half of the UK & Ireland 🌡️In the south, temps are broadly ±2°C warmer than normal ⬆️ Sea surface temperatures (SST) are close to normal conditions in the north of the UK

🌊🔥 Marine heatwave conditions continue across the southern UK and Ireland: 🔹 Southwest UK & Celtic Sea: 3-4°C above average (Category II-III) 🔹 Small area off Weymouth in Category IV conditions 🔹 Western English Channel cooling towards Category I 🔹 Irish Sea remains around 2°C above average

🌊🔥 The UK's ocean is still feeling the heat ☀️⤵️ 🗓️Some areas are 2-3°C warmer than normal, forecasts suggest these conditions could continue through August 📉 There's indication that the MHW is weakening in the Irish Sea 🧭Waters around the northern half of the UK remain close to average conditions

🌡️ Latest UK Marine Heatwave Update - 2 August 🌊 🔥 MHW conditions still persist around southern UK & Ireland ⤵️ Unusually warm water now extends from the surface to the seabed off the coast of Weymouth ⚓️ South of Weymouth, the warm anomaly is mixed all the way to the seabed, approximately 40m deep

Our #jobs highlight is here, with several fantastic opportunities currently available to join the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, Liverpool or aboard our Royal Research Ships! 🚢 Share in your networks! 🌊 ⬇️ Thread continues...

🌊 New NOC-led research suggests limiting global warming to around 1.5–2°C could help the North Atlantic spring phytoplankton bloom recover over time. But if warming rises beyond this before net zero is reached, the bloom could continue declining. Read here: https://orlo.uk/EFaCT 📷 NASA

Boaty McBoatface has returned from its first expedition under glacial mélange! Our friends at @noc.ac.uk sent the UK's favourite submarine on a 23hr mission from the RRS Sir David Attenborough. This data will help show how Greenland's glaciers interact with the fjords and oceans.

Tiny, invisible swirls and twirls – not much bigger than a coin – deep below the ocean’s surface are silently shaping some of the biggest forces steering our climate: sea-level rise, fisheries collapse, extreme flooding, and how much carbon dioxide the ocean absorbs. 📷 Tasman Sea | NASA

🌡️ MARINE HEATWAVE UPDATE - as of 19 July 26🌊 📉 There are signs the marine heatwave is declining ↙️ Cool water from Norway appears to be spreading southwest ‼️Whilst conditions may be declining, many areas are still warmer than usual 👇Find out what's happening beneath the surface at link below

🌊 Our ocean is absorbing heat from the atmosphere this summer, and it's just not getting a chance to cool down. Just like heatwaves on land, we get them in the ocean too. Oceanographer Dr. Zoe Jacobs explains the severe, successive marine heatwaves hitting UK waters right now. #marineheatwave

📢 Climate extremes are becoming the new ‘normal’🇬🇧 @metoffice.gov.uk's ‘State of the UK Climate’ report is out now, with contributions from NOC's Drs Andy Matthews, Jo Williams & Svetlana Jevrejeva who have provided expertise on sea level observations. Rising sea level could heighten UK flood risk.

🌡️NOC's MARINE HEATWAVE UPDATE - as of 11 July 26🌊 📈Anomalies continue to rise in the North Sea 🌊+5°C anomalies on the Dorset, Devon and Cornwall coasts 4️⃣West Bay > Weymouth classed ‘Extreme’ MHW 🇮🇪W of Ireland has switched from cool -1-2°C to warm anomalies +1-2°C

📣🌊 UK BBNJ ratification! 🌊🇬🇧 Our CEO, Prof John Siddorn said: "As a proud contributor in the development of this important Agreement, NOC stands ready to support its implementation. #BBNJ 👇 Keep reading

NOC is proud to have supported the UK Govt throughout the development of this multilateral Agreement and domestic legislation, culminating in the UK BBNJ Bill, providing specialist scientific & technical advice on marine genetic resources, ship management, technology development & capacity building.

🌡️NOC's MARINE HEATWAVE UPDATE - as of 8 July 26 🌊 🔴 Small pockets of water are now categorised as a category IV MHW, which is highly unusual for UK waters. 🌊SST anomalies have increased across the entire region

Safety first, science always. It's Maritime Safety Week this week, and we're taking the chance to highlight and recognise the expertise of our ship's crews and support teams who help maintain the highest standards of safe operations on RRS James Cook and RRS Discovery. 🚢
