NEW: Early on Aug. 25, the Tohono O’odham Nation received a one-minute notice from Border Patrol. A convoy of contractors — guarded by masked agents — was en route to conduct testing for a coming border wall. The tribe was warned: Do not interfere.

We stand with the Tohono O'odham nation against the construction of a second border wall that would further desecrate Quitobaquito Springs and 62 miles of sovereign land. For centuries the Tohono O'odham people lived free of barriers, surveillance, and militarization.

🚨 All eyes on the border wall blockade at Camp O:ṣhad in Lochiel, Ariz. This morning, over 50 Border Patrol / BORTAC agents raided the resistance camp, entering private property without a warrant, attacking land defenders & deploying a cherry-picker to extract the tree sitter.

“Colonial borders, barricades and police violence will not shake our obligation to these sacred places. We’ll continue to take care of this land. And the land will take care of us.” - Hon'mana Seukteoma, Tohono O’odham Land Defender

The NPS should have been protecting the land and people, not the border wall construction that nearly emptied the spring. Today, USFS should consider who they are protecting, in the name of "public safety". Shame on the US Forest Service.

We have witnessed unprecedented damage as border wall construction has waived dozens of environmental protections. Earlier this year, construction crews working near the Tohono O'odham nation destroyed the Las Playas intaglio, the oldest geoglyph in the Americas.

The impact of these closures prevents No More Deaths from servicing a handful of our humanitarian aid drop sites in the Arivaca corridor. We know that further lack of life saving resources in the borderlands is deadly.

Land defenders are asking for you to join them. Folks on the ground in Lochiel, AZ / La Noria, MX have halted construction at the site of a 200 year old Cottonwood tree, yet construction resumed this morning just a few hundred yards from the last standing Cottonwood tree.

As border wall construction expands across the borderlands, including the addition of the double border wall, we wanted to take a moment to say that WALLS DO NOT WORK. They do not deter migration, just make the crossing more deadly while desecrating the land that they stand on.

These deaths are not isolated tragedies. They reflect the human consequences of policies that seek to deter migration by increasing the risks people face. The border wall is not just a symbol of decades of border violence, but also a tool to cause harm, separation and death.

While No More Deaths is not directly involved in these resistance efforts, we stand with those who are. The expansion of border infrastructure is not simply an effort to create a physical barrier; it is part of a broader strategy that has consistently relied on making migration more dangerous.

Between 2019 and 2021, many sections of the existing border wall were replaced with 30- to 40-foot steel barriers, and new stretches of wall were built to the same specifications. Since then, the number of documented deaths resulting from wall falls has risen dramatically.

As part of the Prevention Through Deterrence strategy, border barriers were intentionally constructed to push people into remote and rugged terrain, where they were more likely to become injured, lost, or abandoned and far less likely to encounter help when they needed it.

As we write this, major resistance is happening across the borderlands to the construction of the double border wall at Quitobaquito, the San Rafael Valley, and the beloved Big Bend region of Texas. ( Photo from Border Wall resistance camp in the San Rafael Valley, Ariz. Photo: Russ McSpadden )

The 250 year old Cottonwood tree branches once stretched across the border into Mexico before the destruction began in Lochiel. Support the land defenders and protect the borderlands from further militarization and destruction.

BREAKING: Tree sit goes up to stop border wall construction in Arizona. The action is reportedly the first tree sit in the U.S. aimed at stopping construction of a border barrier. Land defenders on the ground are asking people to show up and support.

We have seen this countless times in the borderlands. Border Patrol agents chase someone crossing the desert into traffic or until that person disappears. They say that the death or disappearance was not the fault of the agency, yet their tactics are intentionally deadly.

We cannot grow accustomed to this violence. We refuse a society where the loss of human life is met with resignation instead of outrage, compassion, and accountability. Every death like Joan’s demands our attention, our mourning, and our commitment to seeking truth and justice.

There is no excuse for the actions of the Department of Homeland Security and its affiliated agencies of ICE and BP. From the borderlands of southern Arizona, we continue to call for a world free of borders and the violence that accompanies their enforcement.

Every person who is killed is more than a name in a news report. They are someone's child, sibling, parent, partner, friend, neighbor. Their absence sends ripples through countless lives, leaving grief, unanswered questions, and wounds that do not easily heal.

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was murdered by an ICE agent yesterday in Houston, exactly 6 months after Renee Good was murdered in Minneapolis. ICE has made the same "justification" for murdering Lorenzo Salgado Araujo as they did for Renee Good. These murders are not accidental nor are they justifiable.

ICE killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo & immediately said he was trying to hit agents with his car. They say this every single time, and every single time, they’re lying! “People were crying on the streets as he was dying,” Garcia said.” wapo.st/4wsY4Tf

An agency that faces no repercussions for its actions and acts with total impunity is not built on justice. We know that ICE cannot be reformed, so we continue to call for the abolition of ICE and CBP. To directly support Lorenzo's family you can donate to them here.

The traditional territory of the Tohono O'odham nation is already severed in half by the US/Mexico international border, with families split across a line that crossed them. Many nation members experience heightened surveillance from border technology and violent policing from Border Patrol.

There is no O'odham word for "wall". We affirm the right that all peoples, especially the indigenous caretakers of this land, remain free from further state violence, state militarization, and the irreversible destruction of their lands and sacred sites.
