Motor Trend's le Carré of the Year

I'm going to allow myself some unsober thoughts. Have a good Tuesday.

"get used to it man or join that statistic." Hmm. There are times I wish I weren't as staunchly pacifistic.

It's been a while since I've done a `dump -0u $volume` by hand against ext4.

Oh, huh. The Laconia plot in the Expanse is kind of speed-running Kerensky's exodus and the return of the Clans, just with a lot less iron womb eugenics.

Oh, good, we've crossed over into the "Reichsadler" stage of where we're at.

Current catus Laureline has been TALKING to me all day today, and all she wants to do is either laze on me or laze next to me. What the hell happened?

Oh, hey, it actually installed the 25H2 update. I broke that installation of Windows pretty badly, so it's kind of a miracle that it succeeded at all.

Current catus Valérian is curled up in the eepy baby box. Laureline, who is the one most guilty of sock crimes in this house, has knocked the "sock crimes" cushion off the armchair and curled up in its place.

Hey, psst, the 1987 Mel Brooks film "Spaceballs" is free to watch on YouTube. Sadly, his 1981 film "History of the World, Part I" is not, nor are his 1974 films "Young Frankenstein" and "Blazing Saddles." I'm sure there are others that are missing, but those are what come to mind.

Current catus Valérian is cawing at the crows outside.

"Why does he obsess so much over making sure the ship stays in tip-top shape?" "He broke it once. This is his way to atone for it." "Ah, is that what the 'She takes care of you; you take care of her' is all about?" "You could very well call it apologizing instead of atoning, I suppose."

I went out past Shoreline yesterday to go harass the coots, and something occurred to me. I don't mind that things have become orders of magnitude less useful over the past 20 years. I mind that they haven't, in turn, become orders of magnitude more hilarious.

Ah, good, yes, somnolence on stimulants is finally considered incredibly diagnostically significant.

Spectral theory is a neat niche in mathematics. Eigenvalue problems seem insignificant until you learn that solving linear ODEs is (more or less) an exercise in finding a linear differential operator's eigenspace. Then, spectral radii have implications for the convergence of numerical methods.

Current catus Back when Valérian was a kitten, he had problems staying on things without falling off. He's since dramatically improved. Laureline, meanwhile, whenever she's lost in the sauce and being an utter purrbucket, will happily fall out of my lap like it's nothing. Welcome to cats.

Current catus Valérian is very funny. I just spent the last couple of hours, give or take, on a video call, and he chose to curl up on the chair next to me. I pestered him for a good chunk of that time. Surely, he'd want little to do with me. Alas! He wants nothing more than to bunt my hand.

Current catus Crepuscular dipshit hours have resulted in a discovery: the wheel is a good outlet for zoomies. I can't tell who's running in it, and I don't want to change my observation of the system lest I impede the progress being made, but… I'll take it.

The best way to clean up a song for the radio is to replace the percussion with a washing machine.

"In its most recent sixth edition, 'Proofs from THE BOOK' contains 45 chapters …" This sounds way more metal than it actually is. Each chapter is a presentation of another proof, more or less. The fact that we've only managed to catalog 45 of the Supreme Fascist's proofs is, frankly, underwhelming.

It's a shame that this isn't an open access article. The conversation about carrying amounting to cocycles in $\mathbb{Z}_100$ is worth it alone. www.jstor.org/stable/3072368

Current catus Laureline is a very organized girl. She keeps her paws all in one place while she sleeps.

I'm honestly getting a little tired of information recall hitting a wall and seizing when I need it most. I might need to restart amphetamines.

This in particular might actually be a trauma response after having seen what Steven Spielberg did to Brian Aldiss' "Supertoys" series of short stories.

I will however comment on the fact that I'm honestly kind of over books being made into films and TV shows except under specific circumstances. Ishiguro's "Klara and the Sun" prima facie feels not especially great to see a trailer for, but we'll see, I suppose.

I will not comment on computer hardware shit today.

Alright. Home stretch for review.

One of the nice things about having whatever a Tablet PC is called these days is that I can still do math when I'm trapped supine by cats. OneNote on the left for scribbling, Drawboard on the right for reading and annotating whatever book I'm working through. It's rather comfortable!

I wouldn't mind having a family of opossums in my panniers. They're the absolute chillest of the North American starter trash mammals.

Of course Meowth's habitat would be some cardboard boxes and a straw bed. Of course.

One of the advantages of the quarter system is that there aren't (usually) that many topics to review.

Current catus Valérian is still in the box I put him in a couple of hours ago when he was demanding attention by being naughty. I fell asleep with him like that in my lap, and I guess he's decided that's a perfectly fine place. Laureline is now curled up opposite him. I'll take it.

Sometimes, the compendium approach (or, more appropriately, the Get Good approach) is just necessary, as annoying as that is.

As much as I rail on the ants (and sometimes wasps) that like coming into the house, I do nevertheless think members of the order Hymenoptera are pretty cool.
