If you use a #SwampCooler or #EvaporativeCooler check out the app I just released for helping forecast your *indoor* conditions, showing when or if your cooler will work, based on your local weather forecast (and much math!) Free w/ limited ads. swampcooler.app (US only first, more countries soon)

It's a 3 language week already! C++ (and C), Python and Dart. LLMs sure do help with the learning and re-learning of programming language techniques and the open source ecosystems available. ๐Ÿค“

Dear YouTube, Thank you for teaching me how to pronounce certain technical acronyms that I've only never heard, only read in print. Today I learned #MADIS is pronounced (May-Diss), not mah-diss. ... and #ECMWF is *not* pronounced (Eck-Mwoof)... but Eck-Mwoof has a nice ring to it, I think.

... just submitted my first mobile app to Apple for review before public release. #Dart / #Flutter made it easy to develop for both iOS and Android. As soon as I finish the monetization code for Android, I'll send it to Google for public release review, too.

Today's useless but curious total code line count is: 33,561 lines of code, equivalent to 508.5 printed pages. (That excludes about 5k lines of auto-generated OSS license text strings.)

Math is hard for journalists. I can't count the number of articles which say the 145% tariff on China will make goods 1.45x more expensive. No. It's actually 2.45x. By example: Original price: $100 Tariff imposed: $145 (because 145% of $100 is $145) Total: ($100+$145) = $245. That's 2.45x ! ๐Ÿง

Gemini AI generated some ice cream flavors to describe Trump. Runner up: > Meltdown: A bitter orange swirl with a wall of questionable sprinkles. My favorite: > "Covfefe Crunch": An unsettling blend of orange sherbet, questionable nuts, and a lingering aftertaste of chaos. ๐Ÿ˜†

TIL: as a mobile app developer with ~8 phones on-hand for testing... I got EIGHT #earthquake alerts for a 6.6 simultaneously. After the shock of the cacophony of alerts, I didn't notice any shaking here in Palm Springs. Glad it was only 5.2 in Julian/SD, not 6.6. Thankful for #USGS! ๐Ÿ‘

Adding support for in-app-purchases to my first #Flutter app. About 10x more complex than I expected. Crunching through the Google Play integration first. Apple's recently went through a major deprecation/API-replacement to StoreKit2. I sure hope the dust has settled on the client libraries. ๐Ÿคž

#Flutter #Dart Today I wrote my first extension method for an auto-generated data class- a PODO for de/serialization, to give it a useful behavior. Is this enough new XP to level up?

I haven't needed to use git LFS (large file support) before now, and wow, it works so seamlessly and easily, even with a non-github self-hosted repo. Guilt-free git commits for large-ish video assets!

Today I realized my app can show an error message popup (the kind that auto-dismisses, aka snackbar), for a *variable* duration... based on the length of the string of the error message (plus a constant)... so humans can read them before they disappear... TL;DR: Using constants is unfriendly?

TIL: mobile apps on Apple/iOS don't have a Quit button. On purpose. TIL, Part II: ...and they cannot self-exit, or risk violating Apple's rules for apps.... The company line is that the Home button is the only valid way to "exit" an app. I think Apple needs to loosen up a bit.

To store emojis in MariaDB/MySQL for an existing table using the default/bad collation: ALTER TABLE your_table_name CONVERT TO character set utf8mb4 collate utf8mb4_unicode_ci; In Django's settings .py: 'OPTIONS': { 'charset': 'utf8mb4', } NOTE: collation name and charset are slightly different.

I had changed my DB settings in django's settings to support emojis, but forgot I had already built some tables using the bad/default charset/collation... It's sometimes easier to change the DB (main) instead of using migrations, if it's just a table that snuck through w/out the right charset.

That MariaDB/MySQL still uses a 3-byte partial-unicode character encoding by default is pretty annoying. I saw emojis in user inputs breaking w/ exceptions: (1366, "Incorrect string value: '\\\\xF0\\\\x9F\\\\x99\\\\x83\\\\xF0\\\\x9F...' for column `blah`.`blah_table`.`body` at row 1")

I love when moving a single line of code solves allยน my problems. It doesn't happen often for me, but when it does, it's a rare kind of magic. Footnotes: 1. obviously not ALL my problems, but the difficult ones at hand.

Ugh, I feel like it won't be long before we get some new reality-TV competition show with an awkward name like "America's Most Patriot!!" where contestants try to out-dumb each other.

Today I learned, while coding my first app, that it's spectacularly *easy* to display the different versions of keyboard for inputs, e.g. numeric keyboard vs. the phone number entry keyboard (w/ letters under the digits!), vs. the email address entry keyboard (with a visible @ sign), etc. ๐Ÿ˜

... so now I can be especially critical of any app that doesn't avail itself and offer the best keyboard for an input field. Like, it's literally ONE line of code to tell the OS which keyboard to use. At least, 1 line of code for Flutter, which I'm just loving.

It's 1,461 days until Jan 20, 2029. Today is the first day of Project 1461. The goal: resist, survive and thrive -- even though the US now suffers under a corrupt and corrupting dictator. Remember that one day, change will come. In 1,461 days, under our constitution, it will. Long live democracy.

Is your productivity correlated to the number of open browser tabs, too? I finally squashed a bug that's tied me up in knots for 2+ days. It feels great to fix a problem, but also deflating when the ratio of time spent troubleshooting to fixing is on the order of 1000:1. openssl_scars += 1; #devops

I missed people being able to discuss in a more depth than what Twitter or Bluesky allows. Even Reddit or Hackernews comments don't offer this kind of flexibility. This is why I enjoy classic-style #Flutter forum so much. Just one example here forum.itsallwidgets.com/t/i-just-rea...

forum.itsallwidgets.comI just realized: Flutter is fuc*** up! O.oThereโ€™s strength in having a diversity of languages and tools for software ecosystems. Redundancy enables more resiliency. What seems evident about modern, still evolving but production-active progr...
