nukta.comIran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey agree to continue security talks after Tehran huddle
Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey agreed Monday to continue security talks after their first four-way meeting in Tehran, Iranian state television reported. High-level delegations met amid regional tensions and concerns over energy supplies and the Strait of Hormuz.
#### What did Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey agree at the Tehran security talks?
In a joint statement, the participants said they would continue dialogue to strengthen cooperation among the four countries, including on regional peace and security. Iranian officials said the talks would address developments in Palestine and Lebanon, as well as the consequences of the U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said those consequences and their implications for the wider region would be a central focus. Officials also pointed to what Tehran describes as Israel's expansionist policies.

Ali Bagheri Kani, deputy secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, said the visit was part of efforts to establish a regional security framework. He said the framework would rest on cooperation among West Asian countries rather than reliance on outside powers.
#### Who attended the Tehran security talks?
Iranian Supreme National Security Council Secretary Gen. Mohsen Rezaei hosted the meeting. Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman attended, along with Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defense Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir and Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also attended. Footage broadcast by Iran's state broadcaster IRIB showed Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi seated alongside Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Araghchi and Rezaei.

Pakistan's military public relations wing confirmed Munir's visit to Tehran earlier Monday but did not provide details of his engagements. Speaking during the meeting, Pezeshkian said Iran supported any understanding that promoted unity among Islamic countries. He said Islamic states could draw on their shared capacities to present the world with a model of justice and development.
#### Why is the Strait of Hormuz central to the talks?
The meeting comes as a prolonged conflict has disrupted energy supplies, unsettled global markets and heightened tensions across the Middle East. The Strait of Hormuz has emerged as a key flashpoint. Before the conflict, roughly one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies passed through the waterway.
The war began with U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran in late February. An April ceasefire halted the initial phase of heavy bombardment, but tensions over the strait have continued.
Iran has asserted control over the strait and threatened vessels attempting to transit without its authorization. The United States has imposed a naval counter-blockade on Iranian ports.
The conflict has also widened beyond Iran, with fighting involving Saudi Arabia and Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi movement. The Houthis have targeted Saudi airports and oil facilities, adding to concerns about the security of regional energy infrastructure.
#### What is the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement?
Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey signed the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement in August. It provides that an armed attack on one member is treated as an attack on all.
The agreement has taken on added significance as regional hostilities intensify and tensions between Tehran and Washington remain high.

nukta.comKCCI warns policy rate hike to 12% will raise business costs, deter investment
The Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has opposed the State Bank of Pakistan’s decision to raise the policy rate by 50 basis points to 12%.
KCCI President Talat Mahmood warned the increase will push up business costs, discourage private investment and hinder economic growth.
#### Why does KCCI oppose the policy rate hike?
KCCI says the hike will raise borrowing costs for businesses, making it harder to sustain operations, expand production and invest in new projects. It argues that inflation is driven by energy and fuel prices, geopolitical uncertainty and supply-chain disruptions rather than excessive domestic demand, so higher interest rates will not address its main causes.
Mahmood said inflationary pressures were also linked to rising prices of essential commodities. Raising interest rates under these conditions, he said, would burden businesses without directly addressing the main drivers of inflation.
“The business community is deeply concerned over this decision, as Pakistan’s industrial and commercial sectors are already struggling with high electricity and gas tariffs, expensive raw materials, heavy taxation, rising transportation costs and limited access to affordable financing,” Mahmood said.
#### How could a 12% policy rate affect businesses?
Mahmood said higher interest rates could not reduce international oil prices, lower energy tariffs or resolve supply-chain disruptions. Instead, more expensive financing could raise production costs, potentially pushing up the prices of locally manufactured goods and weakening their competitiveness in international markets.
He said Pakistan needs to expand productive capacity, attract investment, create jobs and boost exports. In that context, he argued, the rate increase could discourage businesses from investing and expanding.
#### What does KCCI want policymakers to do?
Mahmood urged policymakers to adopt a balanced, growth-oriented approach that controls inflation without undermining industrial development, business sustainability and the country’s long-term economic prospects.
nukta.comPakistan develops private equity framework to mobilize domestic capital
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb chaired the third meeting of the committee developing Pakistan’s private equity framework, which aims to channel domestic savings into businesses and investment projects.
The committee reviewed regulatory changes, tax proposals and ways to identify commercially viable opportunities as the government pursues reforms to expand private-sector financing.
#### What is Pakistan’s private equity framework?
Pakistan’s private equity framework is a government plan to channel domestic savings into private equity funds, businesses and commercially viable projects. Aurangzeb said mobilising domestic capital is the first step towards a functioning private equity market, which could later attract foreign institutional investors and enable international co-investment.
The committee examined potential opportunities in Pakistan’s private equity market, including business acquisitions, consolidation, new projects and exits by existing investors. Participants discussed building a substantial pipeline of investable opportunities over the next five to 10 years, backed by domestic liquidity that could be directed towards productive economic activity.
#### How will domestic capital be mobilized for private equity?
Mobilizing domestic institutional capital was a key focus of the meeting. Discussions covered funds held by banks, insurance companies, mutual funds, pension schemes and development finance institutions, while local corporations and family offices were also identified as potential investors.
The committee considered structures to channel these resources into private equity funds, businesses and commercially viable projects. Aurangzeb welcomed progress on the committee’s work and stressed the need to turn policy reforms into practical investment opportunities.
He said the framework should be transparent, commercially viable and attractive to investors. In his view, it should help mobilize domestic savings, draw institutional capital and support private-sector-led growth.
#### What regulatory and tax changes is the committee considering?
On regulatory reforms, the committee reviewed proposals concerning fund structures, transparency, investment arrangements and financial institutions’ participation in private equity funds. The State Bank of Pakistan briefed participants on recent regulatory changes, including an increase in the maximum amount banks may invest in a single private equity fund from 10% to 20%.
The committee also considered tax recommendations intended to give private equity funds a clear and competitive tax framework. These included a proposal to treat funds as pass-through entities, with tax levied at the investor level rather than the fund level.
Aurangzeb called for a review of international tax models to determine how they could be adapted to Pakistan’s economic and regulatory conditions. He said the proposed arrangements should facilitate legitimate investment while preventing tax arbitrage, unintended market distortions and inconsistencies in regulation.
Participants stressed the need for coordination among regulatory and taxation authorities. They said this would ensure consistent treatment of different investment vehicles and support the development of the private equity market.
#### What happens next for the framework?
Aurangzeb directed relevant stakeholders to resolve outstanding regulatory and tax issues, advance plans to mobilize domestic capital and identify viable investment opportunities. The aim is to move the framework towards implementation.
He said a stronger private equity ecosystem could deepen domestic capital markets, improve access to long-term risk capital, encourage private investment and support sustainable economic growth.
The meeting was attended by the adviser to the prime minister on privatization, the finance secretary, the chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue and other committee members from public- and private-sector institutions.

nukta.comPakistan’s Jamaat-e-Islami threatens Islamabad march over petroleum levy
Pakistan’s opposition party Jamaat-e-Islami has threatened to march on Islamabad in mid-November if the federal government fails to abolish the petroleum levy and provide relief from rising living costs. Party chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman announced the plan Monday, renewing pressure on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s administration after an earlier march was called off in September.
## Why is Jamaat-e-Islami threatening a march on Islamabad?
Jamaat-e-Islami wants the government to abolish the petroleum levy completely and ease the financial pressure on households. The party argues that the tax contributes to high fuel costs and that previous price reductions have not provided enough relief to ordinary consumers.
> لاہور: امیر جماعت اسلامی پاکستان حافظ نعیم الرحمان پیٹرولیم لیوی کے حوالے سے اہم پریس کانفرنس سے خطاب https://t.co/AIkPjaT319
> — Jamaat e Islami Pakistan (@JIPOfficial) October 26, 2026
Rehman said the party would continue its anti-tax movement until public grievances were addressed. He emphasized the difficulties faced by laborers and other citizens struggling to afford basic necessities.
## When will Jamaat-e-Islami march on Islamabad?
The party plans to organize a march toward the capital in mid-November if the government does not meet its demands. Jamaat-e-Islami had called off an earlier march in September at Sharif’s request, setting an October deadline for the government to address its concerns.
The party is preparing to mobilize supporters from across Pakistan for the planned march and sit-in. Local business associations and consumer advocacy groups are watching for meaningful government concessions before the deadline.
## Will the government negotiate with Jamaat-e-Islami?
Talks between the government and Jamaat-e-Islami remain possible despite the threat of renewed protests. Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal and Rana Sanaullah, a special assistant to the prime minister, have contacted the party’s leadership to propose negotiations.
Talks are expected within the next 48 hours. Rehman is scheduled to meet Sharif directly to press for immediate tax cuts and relief for consumers.
## What else has Jamaat-e-Islami criticized?
Rehman also criticized the declaration of a state of emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, calling it a violation of fundamental human rights. He demanded that the government withdraw the measure immediately.
The party’s demands over fuel taxes and its criticism of the emergency declaration add to the pressure on the federal government as it faces the prospect of another major opposition protest in the capital.

nukta.comKCCI urges FBR to fix tax filing issue for returning residents
The Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has urged the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to fix a restriction in its online tax filing system that is causing difficulties for some people who become Pakistani tax residents again after living abroad.
KCCI President Talat Mahmood raised the issue in a letter to FBR Member Inland Revenue–Operations Zubair Bilal, calling for changes to the IRIS portal's Wealth Reconciliation module for Tax Year 2026.
According to Mahmood, the system automatically carries forward a taxpayer's wealth balance from their last filed statement and does not allow them to change it.
This creates problems for people who were not required to file wealth statements while they were non-residents but must submit them after becoming Pakistani tax residents again.
#### Why are returning residents facing problems filing tax returns?
The problem arises when IRIS uses an old wealth balance as the starting point for a new tax year. Returning residents who were not required to file wealth statements during their years of non-residence cannot update that figure, making it difficult to accurately reconcile their wealth for the current tax year.
Mahmood illustrated the issue with the example of someone who filed a wealth statement for Tax Year 2023, remained a non-resident during Tax Years 2024 and 2025, and became a resident again in Tax Year 2026.
Although the individual was not required to submit wealth statements during the intervening years, IRIS continues to use the balance recorded for 2023.
The taxpayer cannot enter the appropriate opening balance for 2026, potentially creating discrepancies and delaying the filing process.
Under Section 116(2) of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, resident individuals filing income tax returns must also submit wealth statements and wealth reconciliation statements.
These documents report a taxpayer's assets and liabilities and explain changes in their wealth.
#### What changes has KCCI requested?
KCCI has asked the FBR to modify the IRIS system so eligible returning residents can enter an appropriate opening wealth balance for the relevant tax year.
Mahmood stressed that the proposed change should apply only to individuals who were not legally required to file wealth statements during the intervening years.
He clarified that the chamber was not seeking a general exemption from wealth declaration requirements or any relaxation for taxpayers who were already required to submit the statements.
KCCI also called on the FBR to involve its technical team, including Pakistan Revenue Automation (Private) Limited (PRAL), in modifying the portal's validation mechanism.
The proposed facility would remain subject to applicable legal requirements and verification where necessary.
Mahmood said the change would allow eligible taxpayers to reconcile their wealth for the current year without having to account for intervening years in which they had no legal obligation to file wealth statements.
He urged the FBR to resolve the issue on a priority basis to help affected taxpayers meet their Tax Year 2026 filing obligations accurately and on time.
nukta.comSBP raises interest rate to 12%, highest in 17 months
The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) raised its benchmark interest rate by 50 basis points to 12% from 11.5% on Monday, taking borrowing costs to their highest level in 17 months amid concerns that the Middle East crisis could fuel inflation.
The decision marks the central bank's first interest rate change since April 27, 2026, when it increased the rate by 100 basis points to 11.5%.
SBP Governor Jameel Ahmad said the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) made the decision after assessing changes in the economic outlook, key economic indicators and the potential consequences of the regional crisis.
Nine of the committee's 10 members supported the 50-basis-point increase, Ahmad told a news conference.
#### Why has the State Bank raised interest rates?
The central bank is concerned that the Middle East crisis could increase inflationary pressures and delay efforts to bring price increases under control. Ahmad said the economic outlook had changed significantly since the previous monetary policy meeting, prompting the committee to reassess inflation risks and consumers' expectations of future prices.
Pakistan's inflation reached 11.1% in August, up from 9.2% in July, before easing to 10.26% in September.
Ahmad said inflation had previously been expected to ease toward the upper end of the SBP's target range of 5% to 7% by the end of the current fiscal year in June 2027.
However, recent developments have made that outlook more uncertain.
“More time will be required to bring inflation within the target range,” the governor said.
He explained that although inflation had initially shown signs of improvement, the potential effects of the Middle East crisis remained a concern.
The committee also considered consumers' inflation expectations when deciding to increase the rate, Ahmad said.
#### What does the rate increase mean?
A 50-basis-point increase is equivalent to half a percentage point, taking the policy rate from 11.5% to 12%.
A higher policy rate can make borrowing more expensive for businesses and consumers, while helping the central bank contain demand and limit inflationary pressures.
The decision reflects the SBP's concern that external shocks, particularly those linked to the Middle East crisis, could make it harder to maintain price stability.
#### What are the latest projections for remittances and trade?
The central bank has raised its remittance forecast for fiscal 2026–27 to USD 45 billion, up from its previous projection of USD 44 billion.
Governor Jameel Ahmad said remittances were close to USD 11 billion in the first quarter of the current fiscal year.
The SBP expects imports to reach USD 71 billion during the fiscal year, while exports are projected at USD 32.5 billion to USD 33 billion.
Ahmad also said the current account deficit was expected to remain within the central bank's existing target of 0% to 1% of GDP.
Remittances are an important source of foreign currency for Pakistan, helping households meet expenses and supporting the country's external finances.
#### What is the outlook for economic growth?
The State Bank projects Pakistan's economy will grow by 3.75% to 4.75% during fiscal 2026–27, compared with its earlier forecast of 3.5% to 4.5%.
Ahmad said economic growth had averaged around 4.2% during the first three quarters of fiscal 2025–26, but a slowdown in the fourth quarter affected the full-year growth rate.
He said economic activity had started recovering in the current fiscal year.
The agricultural sector is expected to perform better than last year, with improved production anticipated for sugarcane, rice and maize.
However, estimates for cotton production have been revised slightly downward.
#### How are Pakistan's foreign exchange reserves performing?
The central bank expects Pakistan's foreign exchange reserves to reach USD 23 billion, with a further increase to USD 25 billion by June 2027.
Ahmad said reserves now cover three months of imports, which he described as meeting international reserve adequacy benchmarks.
He highlighted the improvement in Pakistan's external financial position compared with previous years, recalling that foreign exchange reserves had fallen to just a few billion dollars in January 2023.
The governor stressed that sustaining the recovery in reserves would be critical to maintaining external account stability.
Foreign exchange reserves help Pakistan finance imports and meet international payment obligations, providing protection against global economic uncertainty and external financing pressures.
The latest projections reflect the central bank's efforts to strengthen Pakistan's external financial position while managing inflation risks and supporting economic recovery.
nukta.comShadab Khan's maiden ODI century pulls off miracle win for Pakistan against England
Pakistan pulled off one of the most extraordinary comebacks in ODI cricket as Shadab Khan smashed a breathtaking maiden century to secure a dramatic one-wicket victory over England at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium on Sunday.
Chasing England's modest target of 242, Pakistan appeared dead and buried when they lost their ninth wicket with another 88 runs required. With England just one delivery away from victory, Shadab produced an innings for the ages, turning an almost certain defeat into an unforgettable triumph.
The all-rounder hammered 113 off just 69 deliveries, combining with No. 11 Haris Rauf to produce a sensational 89-run partnership for the final wicket — the highest 10th-wicket stand in a successful run chase in men's ODI cricket.
> View this post on Instagram A post shared by Pakistan Cricket (@therealpcb)
>
Rauf contributed just seven runs off 19 balls, but his ability to survive at the crease proved as valuable as Shadab's explosive hitting.
The remarkable victory also maintained Pakistan's perfect record in the tournament, with three wins from three matches, while England's miserable campaign continued with three defeats in as many outings.
## From certain defeat to an unbelievable victory
At one stage, Pakistan needed 88 runs with just one wicket remaining. England had done virtually everything required to defend their total of 241, and the contest appeared all but over.
Shadab, however, had other ideas.
Rather than surrendering to the pressure, the Pakistan all-rounder launched an extraordinary counterattack, taking the fight to England's bowlers while carefully managing the strike alongside Rauf.
Every boundary brought Pakistan closer to an increasingly improbable victory, while every delivery survived by Rauf kept the hosts' hopes alive.
What initially looked like an exercise in reducing the margin of defeat gradually turned into a genuine chase, with Shadab refusing to let England close out the match.
> View this post on Instagram A post shared by Pakistan Cricket (@therealpcb)
>
His maiden ODI hundred was not merely a personal milestone. It was an innings that rescued Pakistan from the brink and delivered one of the most memorable victories in the team's recent history.
The drama reached another level in the closing stages when Shadab was given out lbw, only for a successful review to reveal a faint edge and overturn the decision.
The reprieve proved decisive as Pakistan continued their charge towards the target before Rauf struck the winning boundary, completing a remarkable turnaround.
## Shaheen Afridi's four-wicket haul restricts England to 241
Earlier, Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi delivered a superb bowling performance after electing to field, claiming four wickets for 46 runs as England were dismissed for 241 in 46.4 overs.
Shaheen struck in the opening over, removing Tom Banton for four to complete 150 wickets in ODI cricket. He followed that up by dismissing Joe Root for five, leaving England under immediate pressure.
England captain Harry Brook, who had smashed a record-breaking double century against Sri Lanka in his previous outing, managed just one run before being run out.
The visitors slumped to 19-3 inside five overs and were later reduced to 52-4 when Haris Rauf dismissed Jordan Cox for six.
However, Ben Duckett launched a determined recovery, sharing a 93-run fifth-wicket partnership with Sam Curran.
Duckett struck 105 off 111 balls, including 10 fours and two sixes, registering his fifth ODI century and first against Pakistan.
Curran contributed 42 off 52 deliveries before Shaheen returned to break the partnership.
Pakistan continued to pick up wickets, with debutant Razaullah claiming two for 38 and Arafat Minhas finishing with two for 26.
Gus Atkinson provided valuable late resistance, smashing an unbeaten 36 off 28 balls, including three sixes, to help England reach 241.
Despite Duckett's century and Atkinson's late contribution, England failed to bat out their allotted 50 overs.
## Pakistan seal final berth as England suffer third straight defeat
The victory extended Pakistan's unbeaten run in the ODI tri-series to three matches and secured their place in the October 31 final with a game to spare.
Pakistan had previously defeated Sri Lanka by 37 runs and England by 87 runs in Rawalpindi before producing Sunday's extraordinary comeback in Lahore.
For England, the result marked a third consecutive defeat in the tournament, leaving Harry Brook's side without a victory despite producing some remarkable individual performances.
England had already suffered a dramatic two-wicket defeat against Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi after posting a mammoth 429-4, only to see their opponents complete the second-highest successful run chase in ODI history.
> View this post on Instagram A post shared by Pakistan Cricket (@therealpcb)
>
Sunday's defeat was arguably even more painful. England had Pakistan nine wickets down, needing 88 runs, yet could not finish the job.
For Pakistan, the match will be remembered for Shadab Khan's sensational maiden ODI hundred, Rauf's invaluable support and a last-wicket partnership that transformed an apparently hopeless situation into a famous victory.

The military's media wing identified the two soldiers as Naik Ghulam Murtaza, 36, a resident of Gujrat district, and Sepoy Taseer Ahmed, 30, a resident of Talagang district. The statement said both were killed while fighting gallantly.
#### What did the ISPR say about the militants?
The ISPR said the militants killed in the operation had been involved in numerous terrorist activities targeting security forces, law enforcement agencies and innocent civilians.
The statement said a sanitization operation was underway to eliminate any other militants suspected of being present in the area.
#### What did the ISPR say about the counterterrorism campaign?
The ISPR reiterated that security forces and law enforcement agencies would continue their counterterrorism campaign under the vision of "Azm-e-Istehkam," approved by the Federal Apex Committee on the National Action Plan. The campaign aims to eliminate foreign-sponsored and supported terrorism from the country.
It added that the sacrifices of the soldiers further strengthened the nation's resolve to safeguard Pakistan at all costs.
nukta.comSuspect arrested in child abuse video network, cybercrime official says
Pakistan's National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has arrested a suspect accused of producing child sexual abuse videos and distributing them through an online network that allegedly used cryptocurrency for payments, an agency official said on Sunday.
#### What is the NCCIA child abuse video network case?
The NCCIA says a father allegedly abused his own children, aged between 4 and 6, and recorded videos that were circulated through a wider network across Pakistani cities. The videos were allegedly sold on Telegram, with cryptocurrency used for payment. The agency says it is still investigating the network's reach.
#### How did the NCCIA trace the network?
Muhammad Shoaib Khan, additional director of the NCCIA in Islamabad, said in video posts on social media that investigators acted on credible information and worked on the case for about a month. The investigation involved analyzing digital data and using the agency's international contacts to identify suspects.

Khan said members of the network had also abused animals and recorded videos of that abuse.
"This is a horrific case. I think perhaps a case of this nature, in which a family itself is involved in abusing its own children and making videos, has not come to light before in Pakistan's history," Khan said.
#### Where are the suspects in the network based?
Khan said the alleged ringleader was from Skardu in the northern Gilgit-Baltistan region. Investigators are examining possible connections in Islamabad, Multan and other parts of southern Punjab, and the agency is working to identify other people who may have been involved.

Khan declined to disclose the suspects' identities, saying the agency does not reveal such information in cases of this nature.
#### What happened in the separate Karachi harassment case?
In a separate case, the NCCIA arrested a suspect accused of harassment and sexual harassment involving a young female victim in Karachi, Khan said. The victim had attempted suicide three or four times because of alleged blackmail and harassment and remained hospitalized, he said.
The NCCIA team in Karachi contacted its Islamabad counterparts, who worked on the case and arrested the suspect within four to five hours. A first information report, the initial police document formally recording a complaint, had been registered in Karachi.
Investigators recovered evidence and secured it for further examination and action against those involved, Khan said. He added that the agency was sharing information about such cases to raise public awareness of online exploitation and cybercrime.
nukta.comHouthis strike Saudi Arabia as Riyadh airport reopens
Yemen's Houthi forces launched fresh missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia on Sunday as Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport reopened after a closure of more than two weeks. The Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted the projectiles. The Houthis warned the airport remains a military target.
#### Is Riyadh airport open after the Houthi attacks?
Partly. King Khalid International Airport began reopening two terminals for domestic and international flights on Sunday, but the full extent of its operations remains uncertain. Passengers were advised to confirm bookings with their airlines before traveling to the airport, as the Houthis have warned it remains a target.
#### What did Saudi Arabia intercept in the latest Houthi attacks?
The Saudi-led coalition fighting the Iran-aligned group said its air defenses intercepted 10 ballistic missiles aimed at the kingdom's southern region. It also reported intercepting a ballistic missile and two drones in the Riyadh region, along with a cruise missile fired toward the southern city of Khamis Mushait.
Residents in Riyadh received emergency phone alerts early Sunday urging them to seek shelter after warnings of a "hostile aerial threat." AFP journalists in the city heard three explosions. Authorities also issued warnings for Abha and areas around Taif, Namas and Jazan.
The coalition later said the threats had been neutralized, Al Jazeera reported.
#### What have the Houthis said about Riyadh airport?
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree urged international, regional and domestic airlines, as well as airport staff and passengers, to avoid the facility. The group said the airport serves as a military target.
"The Yemeni Armed Forces warn all international, regional and local airlines, as well as staff and travelers, against using King Khalid Airport in Riyadh, as it is unsafe and serves as a military target for our forces," he said. "The Saudi regime shall bear the consequences of any operations at the airport."
The Houthis said they had targeted three Saudi airports, energy installations, a pipeline and an air base within 24 hours. They also said they had attacked a naval base and a military camp overseen by Saudi forces in Aden, the southern Yemeni city that serves as the interim seat of Yemen's Saudi-backed government.
#### How deadly were the earlier strikes on Riyadh airport?
An earlier attack on the airport this month killed 13 people and wounded more than 300, according to the initial account. The airport had been closed following those deadly strikes. The attacks have also targeted oil infrastructure and other strategic sites, disrupting transport and business activity.
Saudi civil defense authorities also responded Saturday to falling debris in the Mecca and Medina regions after two missiles were intercepted. The Houthis denied targeting the two cities, Islam's holiest sites, describing the Saudi claim as a "huge lie."
#### Why are Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia escalating?
The latest escalation follows the collapse of a years-long truce between the Houthis and Yemen's internationally recognized government, which is backed by Riyadh. The fighting has intensified as the wider regional conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States continues to threaten regional stability.
The Houthis' territorial advances along Yemen's Red Sea coast have added to concerns about maritime security and energy supplies. Saudi Arabia, the world's largest crude oil exporter, has faced growing pressure as attacks threaten infrastructure, disrupt airlines and businesses, and undermine its efforts to attract international investment and tourism.
nukta.comShaheen Afridi takes four as Pakistan bowl out England for 241 in Lahore
Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi led from the front with a four-wicket haul as England were bowled out for 241 in 46.4 overs in the fourth match of the ODI tri-series at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, on Sunday.
Despite a fighting century from Ben Duckett, England struggled to build momentum after a disastrous start, with Pakistan's fast bowlers making early inroads before wrapping up the innings with more than three overs to spare.
Pakistan, who won the toss and elected to field, now require 242 runs to secure victory.
### Shaheen's four-wicket haul headlines Pakistan's bowling effort
Afridi set the tone with the new ball, removing opener Tom Banton for just four runs in the first over before dismissing experienced batter Joe Root for five.
England captain Harry Brook's stay was equally brief, as he was run out for one following a mix-up, leaving the visitors reeling at 19-3 inside five overs.

Haris Rauf then joined the party, dismissing wicketkeeper Jordan Cox for six, courtesy of a sharp catch by Babar Azam in the slips, as England slipped to 52-4 in the 10th over.
With England facing the prospect of a below-par total, Duckett and Sam Curran launched a recovery.
The pair added 91 runs for the fifth wicket, combining calculated aggression with sensible strike rotation to bring England back into the contest.
Curran contributed 42 before Afridi returned to break the partnership, handing Pakistan a crucial breakthrough.
Duckett, meanwhile, continued to hold the innings together, reaching a well-deserved century despite losing partners at regular intervals.
His innings of 105 was the backbone of England's total, but his dismissal with the score at 187-7 dealt another blow to the visitors' hopes of posting a challenging target.

Pakistan's bowlers maintained the pressure in the closing stages, preventing England from capitalizing on Duckett's efforts.
Debutant Razaullah impressed with two wickets, including the dismissals of Will Jacks and Liam Dawson, providing valuable support to the Pakistan captain.
Gus Atkinson offered some late resistance with an unbeaten 36, helping England push their total beyond 240 alongside Henry Crocombe.
nukta.comIran says borders with Pakistan remain open, blames E-Form changes for trade disruption
Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan Reza Amiri Moghadam said on Sunday that Iran has not closed its borders with Pakistan and imposes no restrictions on exports, including liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). He blamed changes to Pakistan's E-Form procedure for disrupting trade, in a statement responding to reports of border closures.
#### Has Iran closed its borders with Pakistan?
No. Ambassador Reza Amiri Moghadam said Iran's borders with all its neighboring countries remain open and that closing them would be neither logical nor in the interests of either country, particularly Pakistan. He said no restrictions exist on Iranian exports, including LPG.
#### Why is trade between Iran and Pakistan disrupted?
Moghadam attributed the disruption in the movement of goods to changes in Pakistan's E-Form procedure for imports from Iran. He said the changes had effectively prevented traders from dispatching cargo from Iran to Pakistan.
> Clarification Regarding Reports on the Closure of Iranian Borders to PakistanWith regard to reports concerning the closure of Iranian borders to Pakistan, I would like to clarify a few important points here:First, there are currently no restrictions on the Iranian side on the export of Iranian goods to Pakistan, including LPG.Iran's borders with all its neighboring countries remain open. Naturally and rationally, under the prevailing circumstances, it would be neither logical nor in the interests of either side for Iran to close its borders to its immediate neighbors, particularly brotherly Pakistan.Second, changes in the implementation of Pakistan's E-Form procedure for imports from Iran have created a situation in which traders are effectively and literally unable to dispatch cargo from Iran to Pakistan.Consultations with the Pakistani side are currently underway to address this issue.Third, according to reports, several hundred trucks carrying LPG have crossed the Rimdan border into Gabd on the Pakistani side. However, despite having remained there for several weeks, these trucks have yet to be unloaded or cleared, further complicating the movement of goods and the smooth flow of bilateral trade. Finally, I would like to emphasize that cross-border trade between Iran and Pakistan is an integral part of the bilateral agreements reached at the highest levels. It serves the mutual interests of both countries and their people.Iran has made every possible effort, leaving no stone unturned, to facilitate and promote this essential bilateral trade. We remain committed to continuing these efforts in close coordination with our Pakistani counterparts to overcome existing challenges, facilitate the movement of goods, and strengthen economic cooperation between our two brotherly countries.
> — Reza Amiri Moghadam (@IranAmbPak) October 25, 2026
Consultations with Pakistani authorities are underway to resolve the issue, he added.
#### What is the status of the LPG trucks at the Gabd border?
The ambassador said several hundred trucks carrying LPG had crossed the Rimdan border into Gabd on the Pakistani side. The trucks have remained there for several weeks without being unloaded or cleared.
He said the situation had further complicated the movement of goods and disrupted the smooth flow of bilateral trade.
#### What did the ambassador say about Iran-Pakistan trade ties?
Moghadam said cross-border trade was an integral part of bilateral agreements reached at the highest levels and served the mutual interests of both countries and their people.
He said Iran had made every possible effort to facilitate and promote bilateral trade. Tehran remains committed to working closely with Pakistani counterparts to overcome existing challenges, ease the movement of goods and strengthen economic cooperation.
The clarification comes amid reports of disruptions in cross-border trade, particularly involving LPG consignments. The ambassador stressed that the issue stemmed from procedural difficulties rather than any decision by Iran to shut its borders to Pakistan.
nukta.comPakistan to distribute 500,000 Chromebooks to students in two years
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Sunday that the government will distribute 500,000 Chromebooks to students nationwide over two years, launching the Prime Minister's Youth Chromebook Scheme in Islamabad to expand access to digital education.
#### How will the Chromebook scheme select students?
Chromebooks will be distributed strictly on the basis of merit and hard work. The devices are meant to let students continue their education remotely from home, access electronic libraries, and learn from anywhere in the world, according to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
#### What did Shehbaz Sharif say at the launch?
Speaking at the ceremony, Sharif said providing young people with modern technology was his duty and the state's "collective responsibility." He described students from across the country as the nation's true assets.

"Our boys and girls from all over Pakistan are the true assets of our country. It is my duty and our collective responsibility to put the most modern technology and techniques in your hands so that you can become the great builders of Pakistan," he said.
The prime minister also thanked Rashid Minhas, founder of the Tokyo Care Foundation, for donating to the initiative.
#### How does the scheme compare with earlier laptop programs?
Referring to previous education initiatives, Sharif said the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, under former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, had distributed 600,000 laptops to deserving students. Recipients included students in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, selected on ability, merit and hard work.

He said laptops distributed during the COVID-19 pandemic had proved useful for both education and employment. Students who received the devices, he added, had gone on to become doctors and engineers.
#### What other education projects did the prime minister mention?
Sharif also highlighted the government's efforts to improve educational facilities. He said a Danish School had been inaugurated in Islamabad a few days earlier, and that 27 such schools were under construction across Pakistan.
The schools, he said, would stand out for their quality of education, highly qualified teachers, smart boards in classrooms and electronic libraries.

He ended his speech with the slogans "Long live Pakistan" and "Long live Quaid-e-Azam."
nukta.comPakistan rate seen rising to 12% as oil prices fuel inflation risks
Pakistan’s central bank is expected to raise its key interest rate by 50 basis points to 12% on Monday as rising oil prices, persistent inflationary pressures and geopolitical uncertainty heighten risks to the country’s economic outlook, according to forecasts by Topline Securities, Optimus Capital Management and Foundation Securities.
The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has held its policy rate at 11.5% for three consecutive monetary policy reviews following a 100-basis-point increase in April. However, elevated international energy prices, rising costs in some food categories and the risk of further inflation have strengthened expectations of another increase.
Topline Securities expects the Monetary Policy Committee to raise the rate by 50 basis points at its October 26 meeting, citing uncertainty over global energy supplies and the potential for prolonged inflationary and external shocks. Foundation Securities also forecasts a 50-basis-point increase, pointing to above-target inflation, oil price volatility, a narrowing real interest rate buffer and improving economic activity.
A Topline Securities survey found that 61% of respondents expected a rate increase, with 54% forecasting a 50-basis-point hike and 7% anticipating a 100-basis-point increase. The remaining 39% expected the central bank to leave rates unchanged.
#### Inflation and energy costs
Pakistan’s inflation outlook remains a key consideration for policymakers. The brokerage forecasts put October monthly inflation at 0.9% to 1%, translating into an annual rate of around 9.4% to 9.5%. Headline inflation accelerated to 10.3% year on year in September, well above the SBP’s medium-term target range of 5% to 7%.
Optimus Capital Management expects the energy index to rise 2.6% month on month, driven by projected increases of 9.3% in motor fuel prices and 11.3% in liquefied hydrocarbon prices as international oil prices approach five-month highs.
Housing and transportation costs are forecast to increase by 0.7% and 6.7%, respectively, according to the report.
Food prices could provide some relief. Despite sharp increases in wheat flour and poultry prices, expected declines in potatoes, onions, tomatoes, fresh fruit and vegetables could offset much of the pressure, leaving the overall food basket broadly unchanged from the previous month.
Further increases in international commodity prices or disruptions to energy supplies could nevertheless prolong inflationary pressures, the reports said.
A rate increase would also help maintain positive real interest rates. Foundation Securities estimates that a 50-basis-point hike would lift the ex-post real interest rate to about 2.5%, based on its October inflation forecast, from approximately 1.2% in September.
Financial markets have already partly priced in tighter monetary policy. Topline Securities said the six-month Treasury bill yield had risen to 12.24%, while the six-month Karachi Interbank Offered Rate stood at 12.43%.
#### External position and growth risks
Pakistan’s external position has improved in some respects, although rising imports and energy costs continue to pose risks. Foreign exchange reserves held by the central bank reached $21.5 billion by mid-October, according to the economic assessment, providing a buffer against external shocks.
The current account deficit widened to $874 million in the first quarter of fiscal year 2027. Goods imports rose 13% month on month in August, led by an 18% increase in food imports alongside higher petroleum product and crude oil imports.
Exports rose 23% month on month in August, while workers’ remittances declined 2%. Topline Securities expects remittances to remain on track to meet the SBP’s $44 billion projection for the fiscal year ending June 2027.
Economic growth faces additional uncertainty. Optimus Capital Management warned that geopolitical tensions, supply-chain disruptions and climate-related risks could constrain industrial production and agricultural output, complicating Pakistan’s 4% growth target for fiscal year 2027.
Large-scale manufacturing contracted 4.9% month on month in September, although output increased 0.67% year on year. Coke and petroleum products, wearing apparel and automobiles were among the sectors recording annual growth.
Prolonged disruptions to liquefied natural gas supplies and higher oil prices could raise power generation costs, weigh on industrial activity and further constrain economic expansion, the brokerage said. El Niño-related weather changes could also threaten agricultural yields and add to food inflation.
If these risks intensify, Pakistan’s growth target could be revised down to around 3.6%, according to the Optimus assessment.
#### Rate and currency outlook
Topline Securities expects the policy rate to remain at 12% through June 2027 after the anticipated increase, although a sustained decline in international oil prices below $80 per barrel could create room for an earlier cut.
Its survey found that 56% of respondents expected interest rates to be above the current 11.5% by June 2027, while 22% anticipated a decline and 22% expected no change.
On the currency front, Topline Securities forecasts the rupee at between 280 and 285 per U.S. dollar by June 2027. In its survey, 44% of respondents expected the exchange rate to fall within that range, while 41% anticipated a rate of 275 to 280 per dollar.
The SBP’s decision will hinge on the balance between containing inflation and sustaining economic recovery, with international oil prices, geopolitical developments and domestic food supplies likely to remain key influences on the monetary policy outlook.
nukta.comTop-order concerns persist as Pakistan look to continue winning momentum in tri-series
Pakistan will look to continue their winning momentum as they take on England in the second round of the ODI tri-series, with the action shifting to Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
Coming off impressive victories in the first round, beating Sri Lanka by 37 runs and England by 87 runs, the Pakistan cricket team has looked like a well-oiled unit so far.
One of the most encouraging aspects of Pakistan’s performances has been the emergence of young players such as Arafat Minhas and Hasan Nawaz. The team has also impressed with its pitch preparation, clarity of roles and ability to read the conditions.
> View this post on Instagram A post shared by Nukta Pakistan (@nukta.pakistan)
>
Salman Ali Agha set the tone with a brilliant 107 against Sri Lanka, while Arafat Minhas delivered a remarkable all-round performance against England, scoring 59 and taking six wickets. Hasan Nawaz also played a crucial knock of 79, helping Pakistan recover from 133-5 to post 303 against Harry Brook’s side.
Pakistan’s pace bowling attack has also looked sharp, with Shaheen Shah Afridi striking early and Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah providing breakthroughs through the middle and death overs.
### What are Pakistan’s top-order concerns?
However, concerns remain over the hosts’ top order, particularly Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub. It is not that they have struggled to get starts; rather, they have repeatedly failed to convert them into substantial scores, throwing their wickets away at crucial moments.
Babar, who has scored 45 and 34 in the two matches, has displayed some impressive strokes but has also fallen in disappointing fashion. Fakhar scored 16 against Sri Lanka before being dismissed for a first-ball duck against England.
Saim, meanwhile, has managed just seven and eight in the two games, continuing his struggles with the bat. In his last 10 ODIs, he has scored just 250 runs, with only one half-century.
With Pakistan’s middle order and bowling attack stepping up, the top order will need to deliver more consistently as the team enters the second round of the ODI tri-series.
### What can Pakistan learn from the England vs Sri Lanka ODI thriller?
However, the threat from both England and Sri Lanka remains significant, as highlighted by their high-scoring encounter in Rawalpindi.
Sri Lanka chased down England’s mammoth 429-4, securing a thrilling victory by three wickets with one ball to spare.
> View this post on Instagram A post shared by Pakistan Cricket (@therealpcb)
>
Harry Brook’s explosive 200 off 114 balls and Janith Liyanage’s unbeaten 61 off 27 balls under pressure showcased the power-hitting and attacking intent that define modern-day ODI batting.
This is the kind of fearless batting Pakistan have yet to demonstrate. Although the home team's bowling attack looks strong on paper, so conceding such a massive total doesn't seem likely.
Yet, England’s aggressive approach and Sri Lanka’s remarkable chase serves as a reminder that Pakistan’s batters must embrace a more aggressive approach.
nukta.comPakistan presses Taliban to dismantle militant sanctuaries
Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Saturday urged Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities to dismantle militant sanctuaries and take verifiable action against groups operating from Afghan territory.
It said international reports support Islamabad’s concerns that fighters based across the border are carrying out attacks inside Pakistan.
#### Why is Pakistan urging the Taliban to dismantle militant sanctuaries?
Pakistan says militant groups, including the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), operate from Afghan territory and carry out attacks inside Pakistan. The ministry said Kabul must address those concerns instead of issuing blanket denials, and called for credible explanations and verifiable action, citing a UN Security Council monitoring report and a US report.
> Ministry of Information and BroadcastingIslamabad, 24 October 2026Taking note of the recent statements of the Afghan Taliban Regime where they have once again resorted to diversionary allegations instead of addressing Pakistan’s legitimate and longstanding security concerns. Blaming Pakistan’s security institutions does not absolve the Regime of its responsibility to prevent Afghan territory from being used for terrorism against Pakistan.Pakistan’s concerns are not based on conjecture. The UN Security Council’s Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team, in its sixteenth report (S/2025/796), examined the presence and activities of terrorist groups in Afghanistan. The US Lead Inspector General’s Operation Enduring Sentinel report to Congress for January–March 2026 further stated that the Afghan Taliban continued to allow Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) to operate from Afghan territory and that Taliban support and greater freedom for the group contributed to increased attacks against Pakistan. The report estimated TTP strength at 4,000–6,000 fighters. These assessments underscore the seriousness of Pakistan’s concerns regarding terrorist sanctuaries and support networks operating from Afghan soil. The assertion that Afghanistan lacks either the capacity or the interest to destabilise Pakistan does not address these documented concerns. Repeated attempts by armed terrorists to infiltrate across Pakistan-Afghanistan border, the killing of Afghan nationals and members of terrorist groups during Pakistan’s counter-terrorism operations, and the recovery of foreign-origin weapons from terrorist elements, all warrant serious scrutiny. Pakistan has also raised concerns over alleged facilitation of terrorist groups by Afghan Taliban officials, including officials in Kandahar. Such concerns cannot be dismissed through blanket denials; they require credible explanations and verifiable action.Pakistan’s security measures are directed against terrorist threats, not the Afghan people. Peace and stability in both countries are closely linked, and the Afghan people stand as much to gain from a region free of terrorism as their Pakistani neighbours. The Afghan Taliban Regime must end any tolerance, facilitation or support for terrorist organisations, including TTP, BLA and their affiliates, and ensure that Afghan territory is not used to plan, prepare or launch attacks against Pakistan.Attempts to portray Pakistan’s legitimate security concerns and necessary defensive measures as hostility towards Afghanistan will neither deflect attention from the issue nor resolve it. Pakistan will continue to take all necessary measures to protect its citizens, sovereignty and territorial integrity. It remains open to responsible engagement based on mutual respect, verifiable commitments and concrete action against terrorist sanctuaries, support networks and cross-border infiltration. However, Afghan Taliban Regime must understand that peace can only prevail in the region if Pakistan’s core concern of terrorism originating from Afghanistan is verifiably addressed by the Afghan Taliban.
> — Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (@MoIB_Official) October 24, 2026
In a statement issued on Saturday, the ministry rejected allegations against its security institutions. It said assertions that Afghanistan lacked either the capacity or the intention to destabilize Pakistan did not resolve its concerns about militant groups operating from Afghan territory.
The ministry cited a report by the United Nations Security Council’s Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team and a US Lead Inspector General report on Operation Enduring Sentinel covering January to March 2026.
#### What do the reports cited by Pakistan say about the TTP?
According to Pakistan’s account of the US report, the Taliban continued to allow the TTP to operate from Afghanistan. The group benefited from support and greater operational freedom, which contributed to an increase in attacks inside Pakistan. The report estimated the TTP had between 4,000 and 6,000 fighters, the ministry said.
The ministry also pointed to attempted cross-border infiltrations, the deaths of Afghan nationals and militant-group members during Pakistani counter-terrorism operations, and the recovery of foreign-origin weapons from militants. It further raised concerns about alleged facilitation of armed groups by Taliban officials, including in Kandahar, and called for credible explanations and verifiable action.
#### What does Pakistan want the Taliban authorities to do?
Pakistan called on the Taliban authorities to end any tolerance of, or support for, militant organisations, including the TTP and the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), and their affiliates. Afghan territory, it said, must not be used to plan, prepare or launch attacks against Pakistan.
The ministry said its security measures were directed at militant threats, not the Afghan people, and argued that stability in the two neighbouring countries was closely linked. Islamabad also rejected claims that its security concerns and defensive measures reflected hostility towards Afghanistan, saying such accusations would not resolve the underlying problem.
Pakistan would continue to take measures to protect its citizens, sovereignty and territorial integrity, the ministry said, while remaining open to engagement with Kabul based on mutual respect, verifiable commitments and action against militant sanctuaries and cross-border infiltration. It said lasting regional peace would depend on the Taliban authorities addressing Pakistan’s concerns about attacks originating from Afghan territory.
nukta.comPakistan’s polio cases down 99.8% from 1990s levels, president says
President Asif Ali Zardari said on Saturday that Pakistan has cut polio cases by 99.8% from early 1990s levels, as the country marked World Polio Day. Cases fell from an estimated 20,000 a year to 31 in 2025, according to a statement from the president’s office.
### How many polio cases has Pakistan reported in 2026?
The president’s office said five cases have been reported so far in 2026, while Pakistan Television, citing End Polio Pakistan data, reported three confirmed cases. Pakistan recorded 31 cases in 2025, spread across 15 districts, mainly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh.
The state-run broadcaster said this year’s three confirmed cases were reported in Bannu and North Waziristan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, and Sujawal in Sindh. Isolated cases were also recorded last year in Punjab and Gilgit-Baltistan.
### How has Pakistan reduced polio cases since the 1990s?
The 99.8% reduction compares current figures with the estimated annual caseload in the early 1990s. It is not a year-on-year decline. Pakistan launched its nationwide polio vaccination campaign in 1994 under then-prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
> MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT ASIF ALI ZARDARI ON WORLD POLIO DAY (24 OCTOBER 2026)On World Polio Day, I call upon all Pakistanis to continue working towards a polio-free Pakistan. Protecting every child from this preventable disease requires sustained efforts by the Government, health workers, parents and communities across the country.Pakistan has made significant progress towards polio eradication. The number of cases has fallen by 99.8%, from an estimated 20,000 cases annually in the early 1990s to 31 cases in 2025 and five so far in 2026.This progress reflects the sustained efforts of the Government, frontline health workers, parents, communities and development partners. Their continued cooperation is essential to protecting children and ensuring that vaccination reaches every part of the country.Pakistan’s efforts to eradicate polio have a long history. In 1994, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto launched the country’s first nationwide polio vaccination campaign and personally administered polio drops to her daughter, Bibi Asifa Bhutto Zardari.I pay tribute to the more than 400,000 frontline polio workers, 60 per cent of whom are women, who serve communities across Pakistan. Their dedication and courage are central to the effort to eradicate this disease. They must be supported in reaching every child, including those who are missed during vaccination campaigns.I urge all parents and caregivers to ensure that every child under five receives two drops during each polio campaign. Routine immunisation must also remain a priority to protect children against polio and other vaccine-preventable diseases.I call upon community representatives, religious and political leaders, civil society, the media and development partners to continue supporting polio eradication efforts and encourage parents to have their children vaccinated. We must sustain these efforts until every child in Pakistan is protected against polio and the country achieves its goal of a polio-free future.⸻
> — The President of Pakistan (@PresOfPakistan) October 23, 2026
Zardari credited sustained vaccination efforts involving government agencies, communities and development partners. He highlighted the role of more than 400,000 frontline polio workers, 60% of whom are women.
Zardari urged parents and caregivers to ensure children under five receive polio drops during each campaign. He said routine immunization was also essential to protect them against preventable diseases.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif separately reaffirmed the government’s commitment to eradication, saying vaccination efforts would continue until polio was eliminated. This year’s World Polio Day theme is “One Day, One Focus: Ending Polio”, Radio Pakistan reported.
### Is polio still present in Pakistan?
Despite the sharp long-term decline, polio transmission has not been eliminated. Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan remain the only countries where wild poliovirus is endemic, making continued vaccination and surveillance crucial to stopping transmission.
Pakistan is due to launch its next sub-national vaccination campaign from November 2 to 8, targeting vulnerable areas and children who may have missed earlier doses.
nukta.comIran threatens US warships as Trump considers renewed attacks
Iran’s armed forces chief Ali Abdollahi has threatened US warships, warning they would face attack if they approach Iranian territory, state media reported on Saturday.
The warning comes as President Donald Trump considers renewed military action and escalating violence across the Middle East pushes oil prices higher, _Al Jazeera_ reported.
#### Why is Iran threatening US warships?
Abdollahi said the US Navy could not safely enter Iranian territorial waters or operate nearby because Iranian forces could target vessels throughout the region. He said Tehran intended to draw the United States and Israel into a prolonged conflict in retaliation for their February 28 attack on Iran.
“The US president can only dream of their soldiers and military again entering the Persian Gulf,” Abdollahi said, adding that US forces would never fulfil that ambition.
Trump told supporters at a rally in Florida on Friday that Washington could launch another operation under the name “Epic Fury”, referring to the US bombing campaign against Iran at the start of the conflict. He has also weighed whether to intensify attacks or maintain pressure through a naval blockade and sanctions.
Abdollahi said Washington’s claims that Iran’s military capabilities had been largely destroyed contradicted its reluctance to move aircraft carriers and support vessels closer to Iranian territory.
#### How is the Iran conflict affecting oil prices and shipping?
The confrontation has heightened risks to commercial shipping through and around the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil supplies. Brent crude has risen to about $117 a barrel, its highest level since April, amid concerns over further attacks and disruption to maritime traffic.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said seven tankers had been attacked or struck mines overnight into Thursday, and claimed on Friday that two supertankers had hit mines. The claims could not be independently verified.
The IRGC has also said Iran is adopting a more offensive military doctrine. Washington has reportedly ordered some diplomatic personnel to leave Saudi Arabia, with further departures planned elsewhere in the region.
Iranian state-linked media and analysts have discussed the possibility of a so-called “dead hand” doctrine, which they say could allow attacks against US, Israeli and regional interests to continue across Iran if senior Iranian figures were killed. Its existence and operational scope could not be independently established.
The IRGC has also threatened to target undersea internet and communications cables if US and Israeli attacks hit Iranian civilian infrastructure again. Separately, US-based Axios reported on Saturday, citing US intelligence, that Iranian authorities had substantially stepped up efforts to target American officials in the Middle East and beyond.
#### How is the fighting spreading across the region?
The conflict is unfolding alongside widening hostilities involving Iran-aligned groups and regional forces. Yemen’s Houthi movement continued attacks involving Saudi Arabia, striking Riyadh on Saturday, while the international airport in Dammam and the Shaybah oilfield had been targeted in recent days.
Saudi forces, meanwhile, have carried out air strikes in Marib, Taiz and other Yemeni provinces under Houthi control.
In southern Lebanon, Israeli air attacks were reported around Nabatieh on Friday, alongside artillery fire near Zawtar ash-Sharqiyah. Tehran has sought to link the Lebanese front to any agreement with Washington, previously insisting that a ceasefire with the United States must also cover Lebanon.
Israel has also tightened restrictions in the occupied West Bank following a Palestinian attack that killed two Israeli soldiers in Hebron, according to the report. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reiterated his stated goal of overthrowing Iran’s government, while the Houthis have launched attacks on Israel in connection with the fighting in Gaza and the West Bank.
#### Are regional powers trying to end the Iran-US conflict?
Diplomatic efforts have so far failed to bring Iran and the United States closer to an agreement. Foreign ministers from Turkiye, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Egypt, Britain, France, Germany and Italy met in Istanbul on Friday to discuss the conflict, without representatives from Washington or Tehran.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan warned that another attack on Iran would widen the war and spread violence across the region, saying military intervention was not a solution. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul blamed Iran and the Houthis for regional instability.
In a separate statement, the four regional participants, Turkiye, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Egypt, identified the Israeli occupation as the main source of instability. They backed a negotiated settlement, including through the Islamabad memorandum of understanding signed in June.
The four countries also called for unrestricted passage through the Strait of Hormuz, opposed attacks on civilians and commercial vessels, and condemned Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and its Red Sea shipping interests.
#### What does Iran want from the United States?
The Istanbul meeting nevertheless exposed differences over how to end the conflict. Nour News, an outlet affiliated with Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said in an analysis on Saturday that the United States and European powers should make concessions before Tehran. It argued that reopening the Strait of Hormuz depended on Washington accepting Iran’s demands and acknowledging responsibility for attacks on Iran and Yemen.
Iranian newspapers also reflected growing concern over the risk of renewed fighting. Hardline Vatan-e Emrooz described Brent crude’s rise above $117 a barrel as evidence of a setback for Trump, while reformist Etemad warned that US and Israeli actions suggested another intense round of war could be approaching.
nukta.comAurangzeb says Pakistan targets $5.5 billion in IT exports, $44 billion in remittances
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said on Saturday that Pakistan expects IT exports to reach $5.5 billion and workers’ remittances to total $44 billion in the current fiscal year.
He was speaking at a ceremony at a private university in Lahore, as the government pursues structural reforms and export-led growth to sustain economic stability.
#### How are Pakistan’s IT exports and remittances performing?
Pakistan’s IT services exports have grown from $1 billion to $4.6 billion, with freelancers contributing about $1.6 billion. Remittances are projected to reach $44 billion despite concerns that regional conflict could weigh on inflows, Aurangzeb said. Overseas Pakistanis continue to play a key role in supporting the economy and foreign exchange position.
The expansion of the digital economy offered opportunities to increase foreign exchange earnings, create jobs and improve the country’s competitiveness in global markets. Aurangzeb said the freelancers’ contribution reflected the growing role of young Pakistanis providing services to overseas clients.
#### What is Pakistan doing to sustain economic stability?
Pakistan needed to break its recurring boom-and-bust cycle, which had repeatedly triggered balance-of-payments crises because of heavy reliance on imports, Aurangzeb said. Recovering from such crises typically took four to five years, which made diversifying exports, raising productivity and strengthening economic fundamentals necessary.
The government was working to widen the tax base and improve tax administration, he said. It was also supporting exporters through the removal of the super tax, lower tax slabs and financing facilities at an interest rate of 4.5%.
Reducing tariffs and energy costs was also necessary to improve the competitiveness of Pakistani businesses in regional markets. The government had discussed supplying surplus electricity to industries at about 23 rupees per unit, he added.
Pakistan’s credit ratings had improved three times since April last year, and the government had taken steps to broaden its access to international capital markets. The country completed a private placement in April and was advancing plans to enter international markets through Panda bonds.
In the first week of September, Pakistan issued bonds worth 3 billion euros. Investor orders were twice the amount offered, reflecting interest from Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the United States, he said.
Foreign exchange reserves had reached a record high and covered more than three months of imports, compared with a previous low equivalent to about two weeks of import cover. International investors were also looking beyond the current International Monetary Fund programme, which is scheduled to end in October next year. Sustaining stability, strengthening investor confidence and ensuring policy continuity would require continued implementation of reforms, he said.
#### Is Pakistan facing fuel shortages?
Pakistan had avoided fuel shortages despite regional conflicts, with no long queues at petrol stations, Aurangzeb said. Crude oil and other energy supplies remained satisfactory, with arrangements in place to meet requirements through November and preparations under way for winter demand.
He stressed the importance of securing natural gas and liquefied natural gas supplies in time to avoid disruptions for households and industry.
The government had shifted from broad-based subsidies to targeted assistance to direct limited public resources towards those most in need, he said. Relief measures for motorcycles, three-wheelers and vehicles with engine capacities below 800 cubic centimetres had reached 12 million unique individuals, while the total number of beneficiaries was estimated at 40 million to 50 million.
#### How do population growth and climate change affect Pakistan’s economy?
Aurangzeb identified climate change and rapid population growth as major challenges, saying Pakistan’s population was expanding at an annual rate of about 2.55%. If the trend continued, it could reach 390 million, putting further pressure on education, healthcare, employment and other essential services.
Bangladesh, Indonesia and Iran had reduced their population growth rates to below 1% over a decade, he said. Pakistan also needed to invest in women’s education, increase female workforce participation and improve public awareness.
Women accounted for about 22.7% of Pakistan’s labor force, and greater participation could boost productivity and economic growth. Global economic uncertainty and regional conflicts could affect energy supplies and the prices of essential goods, he added.
Pakistan would need to maintain fiscal discipline, pursue structural reforms, expand exports and encourage private investment to deliver sustainable growth and create jobs.
nukta.comOil tanker freight rates hit record highs amid Middle East tensions
Oil tanker freight rates have surged to record levels amid escalating military tensions in the Middle East, according to a Topline Securities report, raising concerns that higher shipping and insurance costs could lift global oil prices.
#### How high have oil tanker freight rates climbed?
Daily oil tanker freight rates have climbed to as high as $254,000, according to Topline Securities, compared with a typical range of $20,000 to $50,000 before the conflict. Rates on some routes have reportedly reached a record $280,000 a day, more than five times normal levels.
The surge significantly raises the cost of transporting crude oil from the Middle East to the Far East. According to Topline Securities, daily rates remained between $20,000 and $50,000 during 2022-2025 before climbing sharply as geopolitical risks intensified.
#### How could higher tanker freight rates affect oil prices?
The conflict has also heightened concerns over rising insurance premiums for tankers operating in the region, adding to the cost of crude shipments. Higher freight and insurance charges could put further upward pressure on international oil prices, increasing import costs for oil-dependent economies.
The extent to which these costs are reflected in global crude prices and domestic fuel prices will depend on the duration of the conflict, security conditions along key shipping routes and the availability of alternative supply arrangements.
nukta.comPakistan rejects former US envoy Khalilzad’s allegations of arming anti-Taliban groups
Pakistan on Saturday rejected as baseless allegations by former US envoy Zalmay Khalilzad that Islamabad was arming former Afghan personnel to fight the Taliban and groups supporting it.
The Information Ministry said the claims relied on speculation and reflected a personal agenda.
#### Why did Pakistan reject Khalilzad’s allegations of arming Afghans?
In its statement, the Information Ministry said the allegations were unsubstantiated and reflected a biased agenda. It called it misleading to equate Pakistan’s counterterrorism operations against militant groups in areas under Afghan Taliban control with recruiting Afghan nationals or backing armed groups inside Afghanistan.

The ministry said Pakistan had made substantial sacrifices in the fight against terrorism and remained committed to regional peace and security. It added that successive United Nations monitoring reports had documented the continued presence and activities of militant organizations, including the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and al Qaeda, in Afghanistan.
The ministry also accused Khalilzad of diverting attention from what it described as the Afghan Taliban administration’s responsibility to prevent its territory from being used by Indian-sponsored groups to carry out attacks in Pakistan. It said his claims sought to bolster the Taliban administration.
#### Who is Zalmay Khalilzad and what has he said before?
Khalilzad negotiated the 2020 US agreement with the Taliban that paved the way for the withdrawal of international forces from Afghanistan. He has repeatedly called for Islamabad and Kabul to reach a negotiated settlement, and made a similar appeal in January this year.
Late last year, Pakistan’s Information Ministry criticized Khalilzad for creating what it called a “false impression” that the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) militant group had a presence in Punjab.

#### What is the series score between India and New Zealand?
India also won the opening match by four wickets at the same venue on Thursday, chasing down a target of 226 with two balls to spare. The second chase proved far more challenging, against a New Zealand attack that had improved considerably from the first game.
The third match of the series will be played in Wellington on Tuesday.
nukta.comSindh government forms JIT to probe Mir Raza Ali’s murder, orders scrutiny of police officials
The Sindh government has formed a joint investigation team (JIT) to probe the killing of Karachi businessman Mir Raza Ali, following a judicial commission’s recommendations, Home Department letters dated October 23 show.
A separate committee will examine police officials named in the report.
#### Who is on the JIT investigating Mir Raza Ali’s killing?
DIG Irfan Ali Balouch, head of Karachi’s West Zone, will lead the JIT. It will include senior representatives from the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Intelligence Bureau (IB), Pakistan Rangers Sindh and the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA). Each agency must nominate an officer of at least Grade 18, preferably within seven days.
Nominees’ names, designations and contact details must be communicated so the team can begin work. The NCCIA has also been asked to nominate an officer with digital forensics expertise. The investigation may examine mobile phones, an Apple Watch, iCloud data, social media and cryptocurrency records, including Binance.
Ali, a 25-year-old businessman, disappeared on July 28 after leaving his residence in Karachi’s PECHS area. His body was found the following day in bushes in Gulistan-i-Jauhar, with a gunshot wound. The case was registered at Ferozabad police station under Sections 365, 302 and 201 of the Pakistan Penal Code, relating to kidnapping or abduction, murder and causing the disappearance of evidence, respectively.
#### What did the judicial commission recommend in the Mir Raza Ali case?
The JIT follows recommendations by a judicial commission headed by Sindh High Court Justice Omar Sial. The commission examined the circumstances surrounding Ali’s death and the handling of the initial police investigation. The provincial government said it has submitted its report, which has since been made public.
A separate letter to the federal Ministry of Interior seeks the nomination of a senior Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) officer, not below Grade 20 and with investigative expertise, to head another committee examining the case. The request follows the commission’s observation that it lacked investigative powers and could not conclusively determine whether an active cover-up had occurred.
The commission recommended a high-level inquiry into whether police officials involved in the initial days of the investigation had breached Sections 201, 166(2) and 218 of the Pakistan Penal Code. The proposed FIA-led committee will also include DIG Irfan Ali Balouch and DIG Naeem Ahmed Shaikh of Karachi’s Special Branch.
#### How will police officials named in the commission’s report be examined?
The Sindh Home Department has constituted a one-member committee headed by Additional Inspector General Zulfiqar Ali Larik of the Counter-Terrorism Department. It will examine every police officer and official named in the commission’s report, with Balouch assisting, according to a notification dated October 23.
The committee must assess the leadership qualities, efficiency and overall policing performance of the named officials in light of the commission’s specific observations. It must also investigate Inspector Ghaus’s role in the burning of the crime scene. Findings and recommendations on each official will go to the IGP Sindh.
The Home Department has also written to the provincial health secretary about the commission’s observations on medical personnel. The cabinet subcommittee has proposed removing Dr Usama Sheikh from his position and requiring him to undergo two years of further training.
The measures form separate strands of the provincial government’s response: a multi-agency investigation into Ali’s death, an FIA-led inquiry into possible misconduct during the initial police investigation, and a review of the conduct and performance of officials named in the report.
nukta.comAfghanistan crush Zimbabwe to seal unbeaten UAE tri-series triumph
Afghanistan beat Zimbabwe by seven wickets in the final to win the UAE ODI tri-series, completing an unbeaten campaign. Ibrahim Zadran made an unbeaten 70 as Afghanistan chased 170 with 93 balls to spare, after their bowlers dismissed Zimbabwe for 169.
#### How did Afghanistan beat Zimbabwe in the UAE ODI tri-series final?
Afghanistan’s bowlers, led by Rashid Khan with three wickets, reduced Zimbabwe to 55-4 and bowled them out for 169 in 43.3 overs, with only Sikandar Raza’s 68 offering resistance. Afghanistan then comfortably reached their 170-run target in 34.3 overs with only three wickets down.
Mohammad Nabi, Fazalhaq Farooqi and Bilal Sami took two wickets each, and Azmatullah Omarzai claimed the other.
Zimbabwe’s innings began to unravel inside the opening seven overs. Farooqi bowled Tadiwanashe Marumani and later dismissed Tafadzwa Tsiga, while Omarzai removed Brian Bennett for nine. Sami then had Brendan Taylor caught behind.
Raza and Ryan Burl steadied the innings with a 60-run partnership. Raza made 68, including his 27th ODI half-century, while Burl added 31 from 45 balls.
Nabi broke the stand by having Burl caught at deep square leg, then stumped Wessly Madhevere, reaching 300 international wickets in the process. Rashid dismantled the lower order, trapping Brad Evans lbw and bowling Newman Nyamhuri. He also ended Raza’s resistance with a catch at long-off, shortly after the Zimbabwe captain had hit him for six.
A 32-run last-wicket stand between Blessing Muzarabani and Wellington Masakadza briefly delayed the end. Sami bowled Zimbabwe out in the 44th over.
#### How did Afghanistan chase down 170 against Zimbabwe?
Rahmanullah Gurbaz made an aggressive start, striking four fours and two sixes in his 31-ball innings before Nyamhuri dismissed him. The same bowler removed Sediqullah Atal for six, but Zadran continued to control the chase.
Zadran and Rahmat Shah added 82 for the third wicket before Rahmat fell for 43 to a one-handed catch by Madhevere at mid-wicket. Zadran and Hashmatullah Shahidi then guided Afghanistan home, with Shahidi hitting the winning boundary in the 35th over.
Zadran finished on 70 not out off 96 deliveries, while Gurbaz contributed 36. Afghanistan reached 172-3 in 34.3 overs, completing the seven-wicket win with 93 balls to spare.
The victory capped a commanding tournament, as Afghanistan went unbeaten to claim the tri-series title.
nukta.comPakistan stocks face volatile week as interest rate decision looms
Pakistan's stock market is expected to remain volatile in the coming week as investors await the central bank's interest rate decision, assess corporate earnings and monitor geopolitical tensions that have pushed international oil prices higher, according to brokerage reports.
The State Bank of Pakistan's (SBP) Monetary Policy Committee is scheduled to meet on October 26, with brokerages offering differing expectations about whether the central bank will maintain its policy rate or raise it by 50 basis points.
AKD Securities expects the central bank to maintain its policy rate at 11.5%, citing strengthening economic indicators, while Spectrum Securities sees expectations of a possible rate increase weighing on investor sentiment.
The contrasting assessments come after the benchmark KSE-100 Index declined by 4,045 points, or 2.4%, during the week ending October 23, closing at 162,375 points.
#### What could determine the stock market's direction next week?
The October 26 monetary policy announcement is expected to be a major influence on market sentiment, alongside September-quarter corporate earnings and developments in the Middle East. Brokerages differ over the likely interest rate decision, while rising international oil prices pose additional risks to inflation and investor confidence.
AKD Securities expects the SBP to maintain the current interest rate, pointing to stronger economic indicators and a slowdown in broader industrial activity.
The brokerage said favorable developments in the Middle East conflict could moderate international oil prices and create room for monetary easing.
It also described Pakistani equities as attractively valued, with the market trading at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 5.9 times.
Spectrum Securities, however, expects cautious trading ahead of the policy announcement, citing expectations of a possible 50-basis-point rate increase.
The brokerage identified geopolitical uncertainty, including developments involving Iran and tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, as another risk to market sentiment.
It warned that attacks affecting shipping and any renewed military action against Iran could undermine confidence and add to inflationary pressures through higher oil prices.
Arif Habib Limited also identified the monetary policy decision and the ongoing September-quarter corporate earnings season as important factors likely to shape market direction next week.
#### Oil prices rise as KSE-100 loses 4,045 points
International oil prices climbed by approximately 6% during the outgoing week amid continued Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and reports of possible US military action against Iran after the midterm elections.
The increase added to concerns about Pakistan's energy import costs and inflation outlook, even as domestic petrol and diesel prices declined during the review period.
AKD Securities attributed the domestic fuel-price reductions partly to a lower ceiling on refinery crack spreads, which measure the difference between crude oil and refined fuel prices, alongside relatively stable Dubai crude prices.
The decline in the stock market was accompanied by weaker trading activity. Average daily traded volume fell 13.4% from the preceding week to approximately 496 million shares, according to AKD Securities.
The brokerage reported net selling of USD 10.2 million by mutual funds and USD 5.7 million by foreign investors during the week, while individual investors recorded net purchases of USD 14 million.
Among sectors, refineries were the weakest performers, declining 10.1%, followed by technology and communication stocks, which fell 7.7%.
Looking ahead, investors will assess whether improving domestic economic indicators and corporate earnings can support equities despite elevated oil prices and uncertainty over the SBP's next interest rate decision.
nukta.comPakistan authorities bust digital syndicate, arresting 42 over obscene animation sales and social media fraud
Pakistan's National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) arrested 42 company owners and employees following coordinated raids on three digital setups in Karachi's Rabia City area in Gulistan-e-Johar, busting an alleged illicit network involved in the online sale of obscene animated content and deceptive social media operations.
#### How did bogus graphic design firms operate across Rabia City?
The targeted enforcement operation was executed on the directives of Director General NCCIA Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi as part of an expanding probe into dark-web-linked digital exploitation and cross-border cyber fraud. According to NCCIA officials, the 42 detained individuals include at least 12 juveniles who were hired to operate workstations.
During the search operations, cybercrime teams impounded 41 smartphones and digital hardware across three entities masquerading as commercial graphic design firms:
* **Pixel Craft:** A facility operational for approximately two years, from which investigators impounded 19 mobile handsets.
* **Art Design:** A setup staffed by 17 workers, where authorities confiscated 17 mobile devices.
* **Art Office:** A smaller digital branch from which five smartphones were seized.
Publicly, the companies presented themselves as legitimate digital marketing and creative agencies offering logo creation, digital banners, and commercial illustration services to overseas clients. However, NCCIA investigators stated that the commercial services served as a front to draw in foreign users and systematically facilitate the illicit distribution and sale of pornographic animations.
#### What was cross-border digital modus operandi uncovered by investigators?
According to investigative findings, workers at the raided premises maintained coordinated social media profiles on platforms including X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram using fabricated personas and women's identities. Handlers used these accounts to establish trust, solicit conversations, and entice overseas clients into purchasing illicit visual content and processing foreign currency transactions.
Digital forensic specialists at the NCCIA have launched a comprehensive extraction and analysis of the 41 seized handsets, encrypted chat histories, and associated social media handles. The forensic audit is designed to reconstruct cross-border payment rails, map international client directories, and trace connections to broader dark web distribution channels. Authorities confirmed that formal charges and legal proceedings under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) will be finalized once forensic data extraction is complete.
nukta.comR4 and European foreign ministers urge de-escalation in US-Iran standoff and Middle East conflicts
Foreign ministers representing Pakistan, Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and four European powers issued a joint call on Saturday, October 24, for urgent dialogue, diplomacy, and de-escalation to resolve spreading regional conflicts and safeguard international shipping routes across the Middle East.
#### What key security flashpoints and maritime corridors were addressed in Istanbul?
The high-level consultative session, convened in Istanbul on Friday, October 23, brought together foreign ministers of the R4 grouping—Pakistan, Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt—alongside counterparts from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Italy. The landmark meeting marked an unprecedented expansion of the consultative channel, linking leading regional powers from the Muslim world with key European governments exposed to the security and economic fallout of Middle Eastern instability.
According to a joint press release issued by Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) on Saturday, the eight foreign ministers reviewed the escalating US-Israel-Iran conflict, the broader Israeli-Palestinian crisis, and the urgent necessity of reaching a negotiated two-state solution anchored in United Nations resolutions.
The ministerial discussions also focused directly on maritime security and cross-border aggression, addressing recent drone and missile strikes by Yemen's Houthi militia against civilian infrastructure and commercial targets in Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Highlighting recent strikes and naval blockades affecting commercial shipping, the ministers underscored the imperative of protecting freedom and safety of navigation across critical maritime chokepoints, specifically the Strait of Hormuz, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in the southern Red Sea, and the Black Sea. The diplomats warned that prolonged maritime disruption threatens to compound global energy shocks, disrupt trade transit, and destabilize world markets.
#### How does new eight-nation diplomatic format plan to advance de-escalation?
The joint gathering, hosted by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, included consultations with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at Dolmabahçe Palace. During the proceedings, ministers stressed that renewed military offensives in the Persian Gulf would carry catastrophic humanitarian and economic costs.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot cautioned that further armed escalation between Washington and Tehran "would create nothing but losers and would undoubtedly have very serious consequences for hydrocarbon prices".
Reaffirming their collective commitment to international law and sovereign equality under the UN Charter, the eight participating nations agreed to institutionalize regular consultations in the same format to coordinate diplomatic interventions, defuse emerging flashpoints, and prevent conflicts from expanding.
Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar held bilateral consultations on the sidelines of the gathering, reiterating Islamabad’s commitment to constructive regional diplomacy and reaffirming solidarity with Riyadh against cross-border aerial incursions targeting Saudi territorial sovereignty.
Regional technical teams are preparing preliminary recommendations on maritime safety monitoring and commercial transit corridors ahead of follow-up ministerial engagements.
nukta.comUS intelligence chief warns Iran's 'lethal plots' against Americans have reached 'advanced stages'
United States Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton warned on Friday that Iran has "substantially increased" its operations to target American personnel abroad, cautioning that lethal plots against U.S. citizens have reached advanced operational stages across the Middle East and other nations, _CBS _ reported.
#### What specific threats were outlined in Director Clayton's memorandum?
The warning was detailed in a one-page unclassified memorandum sent Friday by Clayton to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, with a copy transmitted to Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director John Ratcliffe.
"We have received intelligence that Iran has substantially increased efforts to target U.S. personnel," Clayton wrote in the notice. "The lethal plotting efforts by the Iranians against U.S. citizens have reached advanced stages in both the Middle East and certain other countries".
According to Axios, which first reported the memorandum, the document does not name specific targeted officials, identify the non-Middle Eastern nations involved, or disclose the tactical methods being developed. However, Clayton noted that the intelligence stream directly impacts a broader circle of personnel than those currently authorized to view classified threat assessments. To ensure defensive measures can be enacted, Clayton offered to downgrade the underlying intelligence to the lowest feasible classification level so the State Department can circulate direct security alerts to vulnerable diplomatic and civilian staff.
#### How is State Department drawing down diplomatic personnel across the Middle East?
The intelligence community's alert has triggered immediate operational adjustments across U.S. foreign missions. According to CNN, the intelligence stream directly informed Washington’s decision to quietly downsize diplomatic staffing across four Middle Eastern embassies: the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Qatar, and Jordan.
According to CBS News, the staffing reductions follow earlier mandatory evacuation directives issued by the State Department ordering the departure of non-emergency personnel and diplomats' dependents from Saudi Arabia. Those ordered departures affected the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh alongside regional consulates in Jeddah and Dhahran following a series of fatal drone and missile strikes launched by Yemen's Houthi movement targeting Saudi aviation hubs and Aramco energy installations.
American Foreign Service representatives have raised concerns over the rapid relocations, noting that several diplomatic families evacuated during the initial phases of the conflict earlier this year are now experiencing sudden secondary relocations without settled administrative or housing allowances.
#### How does threat alert intersect with escalating US-Iran military friction?
The heightened intelligence posture arrives amid signs that the Trump administration is weighing expanded kinetic action against Tehran. The wider conflict, which ignited in late February following US and Israeli strikes against Iranian command leadership, has seen persistent maritime friction across the Persian Gulf and reciprocal drone warfare.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and diplomatic outposts across the region have placed regional facilities on high alert against both direct Iranian operations and asymmetric strikes by Tehran-aligned regional proxies.
Addressing the standoff during a campaign rally in Florida on Friday, President Donald Trump warned that Washington is prepared to re-engage with force if American interests are targeted. "If they do anything to our people, the response will be something they’ve never seen before," Trump told supporters, indicating that the United States could launch another round of military strikes against Iranian facilities if provocations continue.
According to reporting by Axios, U.S. security teams across the Gulf are coordinating with host governments to bolster perimeter defenses around diplomatic compounds, residential quarters, and commercial flight corridors.
nukta.comFrance deploys 70,000 police, elite tactical squads, and drones to thwart weekend protest unrest
The French government mobilized 70,000 police officers and gendarmes nationwide on Friday, October 23, deploying elite tactical teams, surveillance drones, and helicopters in an effort to suppress rioting, looting, and coordinated attacks on public infrastructure ahead of another wave of demonstrations.
#### What security measures and tactical assets has the Interior Ministry mobilized?
Addressing an emergency press briefing in Paris, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez warned that intelligence agencies had tracked extensive calls on social media by ultra-left and anarchist networks urging sympathizers to assault municipal buildings, commercial centers, and law enforcement personnel. "We are not talking about a nice, friendly demonstration," Nuñez told reporters. "Look at social media: the far left has called for attacks on public buildings. I am issuing a warning to those who might come and commit acts of violence: we will show no leniency. We will be extremely, extremely, extremely firm tomorrow, and we will let absolutely nothing pass."
According to reporting by Reuters, Saturday’s containment plan departs from conventional crowd-control postures by integrating specialized airborne and counter-insurgency assets rarely utilized during public demonstrations.
The Interior Ministry confirmed that pre-positioned tactical squads, rapid-response intervention teams, and a surveillance fleet of drones and helicopters will patrol urban centers to disperse high-risk agitators before marches converge. "I have designed this operation to be highly mobile, agile, and forceful," Nuñez emphasized. "All high-risk groups will be targeted."
To avoid the judicial bottlenecks that followed thousands of arrests earlier in the week, the government established dedicated legal processing centers within police prefectures across the country. "We have set up dedicated units in every department, including at the Paris Police Prefecture, to process arrests as quickly as possible and bring those arrested before the courts without delay," Nuñez stated.
#### How did high school unrest expand into a volatile cost-of-living crisis?
The widespread mobilization marks a critical escalation in a weeks-long confrontation that began as high school and university walkouts over decaying educational infrastructure, staff shortages, and admission system flaws before merging with broader trade union strikes over high inflation and deteriorating purchasing power. Over the preceding days, violent clashes erupted in multiple urban hubs, with demonstrators burning barricades across Paris’s Place de la République, setting fire to a town hall in Limoges, and blockading hundreds of secondary schools.
According to the Associated Press (AP), public friction deepened sharply following reports of severe injuries among teenage demonstrators. Anger surged after a 15-year-old student lost a hand to a police-issued riot-control device, forcing the Interior Ministry to announce an immediate suspension of the controversial explosive munition pending an administrative review.
In an official public address, President Emmanuel Macron defended the democratic framework of peaceful demonstration while warning against violence and vandalism. "There is a constitutional right to protest and to express oneself," Macron stated. "But this right comes with the need to respect, respect for people, respect for property, and therefore a commitment not to insult or destroy."
#### What municipal curbs have been enforced, and how has the political opposition reacted?
Prefectures across major metropolitan areas, including Paris, Lyon, and Rennes, issued emergency decrees ahead of Saturday's rallies. Authorities prohibited the retail sale and vehicular transport of portable fuel canisters, commercial fireworks mortars, and flammable liquids, alongside imposing localized curfews near high-risk transit hubs and ordering the closure of metro stations adjacent to state ministries and presidential offices. The Paris Police Prefecture rerouted authorized labor union marches to eastern corridors between Place de la Bastille and Place de la Nation, barring all assemblies near the Élysée Palace, parliament, and major museum districts.
However, the state's security apparatus has faced pushback from civil liberties groups and parliamentary opposition figures. According to Channel NewsAsia (CNA), left-wing leaders dismissed government claims of foreign or extremist manipulation, arguing that the expanding protests reflect working-class distress over living costs and social spending reductions that cannot be suppressed through executive decrees and riot barricades. Concurrently, the far-right National Rally led by Marine Le Pen—who is convening a party congress in Orléans this weekend—has used the security breakdown to attack the government’s domestic authority six months ahead of the presidential election.
European interior ministries are monitoring the developments closely, as related cost-of-living and student demonstrations are scheduled to take place across Italy, Spain, Austria, and Portugal this weekend.
nukta.comPakistan strongly condemns deadly terrorist attack on church funeral procession in Jordan’s Karak
Pakistan strongly condemned the deadly terrorist assault on a funeral procession at a church in Jordan’s southern Karak Governorate on Saturday, October 24, extending heartfelt condolences to the Hashemite Kingdom and reaffirming unwavering solidarity in the fight against extremism.
#### What did Pakistan's Foreign Office say in response to the attack?
In an official statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad, Pakistan expressed profound sorrow over the loss of innocent lives and conveyed its heartfelt sympathies to the government, people, and leadership of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, particularly the bereaved families who lost their loved ones. Pakistan also extended its sincere wishes for the swift and complete recovery of those injured in the violence.
Reaffirming Islamabad's brotherly ties with Amman, the Foreign Office underscored that Pakistan stands firmly alongside the Jordanian people in their campaign against terrorism. The statement reiterated Pakistan’s strongest condemnation of terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, emphasizing that attacks targeting peaceful mourners and sacred places of worship represent an intolerable violation of human sanctity and international norms.
#### How did the shooting unfold at the Hammoud church in Karak?
The statement follows an armed mass casualty attack on Friday afternoon in the village of Hammoud in Karak Governorate, situated south of the capital Amman. According to Jordanian security authorities, a group of armed extremists targeted the local Greek Orthodox church during a funeral service attended by an estimated 150 to 200 mourners.
CCTV recordings and eyewitness accounts verified by regional security services indicated that gunmen armed with automatic rifles and handguns opened fire on mourners outside the vehicle entrance before advancing into the church building. Jordan’s Public Security Directorate confirmed that at least seven people were killed and up to 40 others sustained gunshot wounds, with several victims transferred in critical condition to Al Hussein Medical City.
Following the assault, Jordan declared three days of national mourning, while King Abdullah II vowed that the state would confront the perpetrators with the severest penalties. Jordanian security formations and special forces mobilized an expansive manhunt across the governorate and surrounding terrain to track down the fleeing assailants. International bodies, including the United Nations and the Arab League, joined Pakistan in condemning the bloodshed and cautioning against attempts to incite sectarian discord.
According to reporting by the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP), _Al Jazeera_ , and the _Jordan News Agency (Petra)_ , security forces across Jordan have placed critical transport nodes and religious sites on heightened alert as the joint investigation proceeds.
nukta.comPunjab CM Maryam Nawaz raises alarm over alleged bribe to silence azerbaijani rape survivor
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif intervened on Friday, October 23, 2026, in a high-profile gang-rape case involving an Azerbaijani national, alleging that the affluent family of prime suspect Ahmed Tanveer offered a bribe of up to Rs 20 million (2 crore) to buy the survivor’s silence and raising serious concerns regarding judicial corruption in the granting of pre-arrest bail.
#### What did Maryam Nawaz Sharif allege regarding bribery and judicial integrity?
Taking to social media platform X, the Chief Minister addressed the systemic vulnerabilities faced by sexual assault survivors confronting elite influence, warning that wealthy perpetrators cannot be permitted to evade criminal accountability.
> In a recent rape case, it was revealed that the accused’s wealthy family allegedly offered 1.5–2 crore to the victim in exchange for withdrawing her allegations, despite her statement already having been recorded under Section 164. It was further alleged that the judge who granted bail to the accused had also been bribed. If these allegations are true, they raise deeply disturbing questions about the integrity of the justice system and the vulnerability of rape survivors to financial pressure and the misuse of power. I will continue to keep a close eye on such cases to ensure that no rapist or perpetrator escapes justice simply because he has money, influence, or connections. Justice must never be for sale, and no one should be above the law.

"In a recent rape case, it was revealed that the accused’s wealthy family allegedly offered 1.5–2 crore to the victim in exchange for withdrawing her allegations, despite her statement already having been recorded under Section 164. It was further alleged that the judge who granted bail to the accused had also been bribed," Maryam Nawaz stated.
"If these allegations are true, they raise deeply disturbing questions about the integrity of the justice system and the vulnerability of rape survivors to financial pressure and the misuse of power. I will continue to keep a close eye on such cases to ensure that no rapist or perpetrator escapes justice simply because he has money, influence, or connections. Justice must never be for sale, and no one should be above the law."
#### How did the alleged assault and the victim's sudden retractions unfold?
The Chief Minister’s public remarks follow a dramatic reversal in the case of the survivor, identified as an Azerbaijani tourist named Diana. The incident was first reported in late September when the victim filed a complaint stating she had been drugged at a local café in Lahore and transported to an apartment in the Defence Housing Authority (DHA). There, she alleged she was assaulted by multiple men—including prime suspect Ahmed Tanveer, the son of a prominent pharmaceutical manufacturer—before being abandoned near Allama Iqbal International Airport with her personal belongings and mobile phones stolen.
Following her initial complaint, Diana recorded formal testimony before a judicial magistrate under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), in which she detailed the sexual assault and directly named the perpetrators. Medical examinations and forensic evidence were secured, and two co-suspects were taken into police custody.
However, the case took an unexpected turn when recorded video statements surfaced online. In footage dated October 9, Diana retracted her allegations, stating that Tanveer had neither assaulted her nor taken her property, claiming her earlier complaint had been made under duress and requesting that the case be quashed.
In a subsequent video message recorded after her return to Baku, Diana gave a blanket clean chit to Tanveer, asserting that she had wanted to clarify her statement before the court in Lahore but had been warned her life was in danger. She further claimed she had been escorted out of Pakistan before being afforded the chance to record an amended statement, adding that she forgave the other suspects.
#### How are the Punjab government and Lahore Police pursuing the prosecution?
Despite the recorded retractions, the Punjab provincial administration and Lahore Police rejected the video statements, treating them as an orchestrated attempt to derail legal proceedings. Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari clarified on Friday that the provincial government will continue prosecuting the case on behalf of the state, maintaining that in cases of sexual violence, the state functions as the ultimate protector of justice.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Syed Zeeshan Raza confirmed that Diana’s magistrate-recorded Section 164 CrPC testimony remains admissible substantive evidence in court alongside forensic laboratory documentation. Police authorities also pushed back against claims of forced deportation, noting that Diana departed for Baku on a commercial flight under diplomatic and police escort at the formal request of the Azerbaijani Embassy.
On Friday, Lahore police took Ahmed Tanveer into custody outside the courtroom, despite assertions by his defense counsel that he was protected by pre-arrest interim relief. Specialized investigative units have opened formal inquiries into both the financial trail surrounding the alleged Rs 15–20 million settlement transaction and the conduct of judicial officers involved in granting the suspect relief.
Punjab’s prosecution department is finalizing formal charges under non-compoundable anti-rape statutory provisions, where victim retractions do not mandate case dismissal.
nukta.comPakistan petrol falls PKR 8.59 per liter over week despite global oil rally
Pakistan's petrol price fell by PKR 8.59 per liter over the week ending October 23, while high-speed diesel declined by PKR 3.30 per liter, with a reduction in the permitted diesel crack spread helping contain prices despite a late-week rally in international oil markets.
The government reduced the ceiling on the diesel crack spread, the difference between crude oil and refined diesel prices, from USD 41.89 to USD 38 per barrel.
Petrol was priced at PKR 377.71 per liter for October 24–26, down from PKR 386.30 on October 17, according to government petroleum price notifications.
High-speed diesel stood at PKR 393.66 per liter, compared with PKR 396.96 at the beginning of the review period.
The latest notification, issued by the Ministry of Energy's Petroleum Division on October 23, kept petrol unchanged while increasing diesel by PKR 1.91 per liter for the three-day period.
The reductions over the week came under Pakistan's daily fuel price adjustment system, which allows domestic rates to respond more frequently to changes in international petroleum markets.
#### How did petrol and diesel prices change this week?
Petrol and diesel both became cheaper overall between October 17 and the latest weekend revision, although their daily movements differed. Petrol fell by PKR 8.59 per liter, while diesel declined by PKR 3.30. The final adjustment left petrol unchanged but raised diesel by PKR 1.91 per liter.
Petrol began the period at PKR 386.30 per liter after a PKR 3.93 reduction took effect on October 17. Diesel remained unchanged at PKR 396.96 per liter.
The next adjustment, effective October 20, lowered petrol to PKR 381.14 and diesel to PKR 389.27 per liter.
On October 21, petrol increased slightly to PKR 382.02, while diesel rose to PKR 389.80.
Petrol was reduced to PKR 379.31 on October 22, while diesel increased to PKR 390.11.
The October 23 revision lowered petrol by PKR 1.60 to PKR 377.71 per liter. Diesel increased by PKR 1.64 to PKR 391.75.
Under the final notification of the week, issued Friday evening and effective October 24–26, petrol remained at PKR 377.71, while diesel increased to PKR 393.66 per liter.
Despite the late-week increases in diesel, both fuels remained cheaper than at the beginning of the period.
#### Lower diesel crack spread helps contain prices
The reduction in the permitted diesel crack spread helped contain diesel prices during the week, although international prices and other costs continued to affect the final rates.
The reduction of USD 3.89 per barrel, equivalent to approximately 9.3%, lowered the maximum crack spread allowed under the pricing mechanism.
However, the crack spread is only one component of diesel pricing. Changes in international petroleum prices, premiums and other costs also influence the final notified rate.
#### Why are global oil prices rising?
International crude oil prices climbed sharply on Thursday, October 22, as attacks on Saudi Arabia heightened concerns about further disruptions to energy supplies from the Middle East.
Brent crude reached its highest level in more than five months amid fears that escalating regional hostilities could threaten production and shipping, according to Reuters.
The latest tensions follow months of disruption associated with the Middle East conflict, which has increased uncertainty over oil shipments, transportation costs and supply availability.
The rise in crude prices poses a continuing risk for Pakistan, which depends heavily on imported petroleum products.
However, movements in international crude benchmarks do not necessarily translate into equivalent changes in domestic petrol and diesel prices on the same day.
Pakistan's pricing mechanism uses seven-working-day rolling averages of relevant international prices, alongside other costs and adjustments.
This helps explain why domestic fuel prices could decline over the week despite a late rally in international crude markets.
#### What could happen to fuel prices next week?
The direction of Pakistan's fuel prices will depend partly on international petroleum prices and subsequent government notifications.
A sustained rise in global oil prices could place renewed upward pressure on domestic petrol and diesel rates, particularly if supply disruptions in the Middle East intensify.
For households, petrol prices affect everyday travel and commuting costs. Diesel prices also matter for freight movement, agricultural transport and other commercial activities.
The final announcement of the week, issued Friday evening and effective October 24–26, left both fuels cheaper than at the start of the reporting period.
The direction of the next price revisions will largely depend on international petroleum prices, particularly whether the recent oil rally persists amid tensions in the Middle East.
nukta.comKarachi Tax Bar urges FBR to fix wealth statement filing issue for returning residents
The Karachi Tax Bar Association (KTBA) has urged the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to remove a restriction in its IRIS tax-filing system that prevents individuals returning to Pakistan after a period of non-residence from entering the correct opening wealth balance for tax year 2026.
In a letter to Zubair Bilal, FBR member for Inland Revenue Operations, the association said the portal automatically carries forward the wealth balance from the last statement filed, without allowing taxpayers to edit the figure.
The restriction creates difficulties for individuals who were non-residents during intervening tax years and were not required to file wealth statements, but subsequently returned to Pakistan and regained resident status, the association said.
#### Why are returning residents facing tax-filing difficulties?
The IRIS system automatically uses the closing wealth balance from a taxpayer's last filed statement as the opening balance for tax year 2026. According to the Karachi Tax Bar Association, returning residents cannot correct that figure to account for years spent abroad, making it difficult to reconcile their assets accurately.
Under Section 116(2) of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, resident individuals filing income tax returns are required to submit wealth statements and wealth reconciliation statements for the relevant tax year.
The association illustrated the problem with an individual who was a Pakistani resident through tax year 2023, which ended on June 30, 2023, but became a non-resident for tax years 2024 and 2025.
During those years, the individual declared only Pakistan-source income and did not file wealth statements.
After returning to Pakistan and becoming a resident again in tax year 2026, the individual was required to submit wealth and wealth reconciliation statements.
However, IRIS continued to display the closing wealth balance from June 30, 2023, as the opening balance, without allowing the taxpayer to enter an updated figure.
The association said this made it difficult to reconcile changes in wealth for tax year 2026 without accounting for the intervening years of non-residence.
#### Tax Bar seeks changes to IRIS 2.0
The association urged the FBR to modify the validation mechanism in IRIS 2.0 to allow returning residents to enter an appropriate opening wealth balance.
It said the change would enable affected taxpayers to complete their filings without preparing reconciliations spanning years in which they were not required to submit wealth statements.
The KTBA also argued that taxpayers should be allowed to declare opening wealth balances based on relevant information and records, subject to applicable tax laws.
According to the association, the system should facilitate compliance with Section 116(2) without extending the scope of the statutory obligation.
It called for an urgent resolution to allow affected individuals to submit their tax year 2026 wealth statements and reconciliations correctly.

nukta.comLahore High Court overturns life sentence in Holy Quran desecration case
The Lahore High Court has overturned a life sentence against Shahid al-Rahman, convicted in a case involving the alleged desecration of the Holy Quran.
Justice Tariq Mahmood Bajwa cited evidence of mental illness and prosecution witnesses who said they had not witnessed the alleged act.
#### Why did the Lahore High Court overturn the life sentence?
The court set aside the life sentence on the grounds of the appellant’s mental disability, overturning the punishment imposed by the trial court. It weighed testimony on al-Rahman’s mental condition and accounts from two prosecution witnesses who had not personally seen the alleged desecration.
Other witness accounts described him as mentally ill and largely confined to his home. Witnesses also testified that he would throw stones at people visiting a mosque and at his own children, the ruling said.

nukta.comPakistan police arrest foreign woman rape suspect despite court order, lawyer says
Lahore police arrested Tanveer, a man accused of gang-raping a 20-year-old Azerbaijani woman, as he left a sessions court, despite an order extending his interim bail until October 27, his lawyer said.
The Crime Control Department (CCD) made the arrest, according to lawyer Safdar Shaheen Pirzada.
#### Why is the arrest of the Lahore rape suspect disputed?
Pirzada said the arrest violated the sessions court’s order extending Tanveer’s interim bail until October 27, which also directed authorities not to arrest him before that date.
The arrest followed a separate Sindh High Court decision granting him protective bail, which temporarily shields an accused from arrest to allow them to approach the relevant court.
The CCD took Tanveer into custody while proceedings on his interim bail were under way. The arrest triggered heated exchanges and a scuffle between police officers and lawyers outside the courtroom. A heavy police presence was reported in the area.
#### What are the allegations in the Azerbaijani woman’s rape case?
The case centers on allegations that three men raped the Azerbaijani woman after she travelled to Pakistan for business. The alleged assault took place on the night of September 25-26 in a rented flat in a private housing society near Raiwind, Lahore, according to the case details.
Police had sought to place the three suspects on Pakistan’s Provisional National Identification List (PNIL) after they allegedly left Lahore following the incident.
#### Will the alleged victim appear in court?
The alleged victim, identified as Diana, is expected to appear before the court via video link. Her lawyer said her visa had expired and authorities were not issuing a new one. The remote appearance is expected to allow the court to hear her account of the allegations.
She has also recorded a statement before a judicial magistrate under Section 164 of Pakistan’s Code of Criminal Procedure, which allows magistrates to record statements during criminal proceedings.
nukta.comPakistan’s freelance boom highlights stablecoin potential for cross-border payments
Pakistan’s record freelance earnings highlight the potential for stablecoins to improve cross-border payments, as international marketplaces increasingly adopt digital currencies to accelerate settlements and lower transaction costs, according to a report by financial technology company Payoneer.
Pakistani freelancers earned a record $197 million in September 2026, taking earnings in the first quarter of fiscal year 2027 to about $550 million, up 46% from a year earlier, according to State Bank of Pakistan data.
In its report, _Stablecoin Steps Up_ , Payoneer said stablecoins were moving beyond experimental applications to become an increasingly important part of the financial infrastructure supporting international marketplaces, platforms and businesses.
The report, unveiled at Money20/20 in Las Vegas, surveyed 265 senior payments, treasury and finance executives at US-based marketplaces, platforms and enterprises with annual revenue of at least $100 million.
Some 69% of respondents said they were already using stablecoins in live operations, while 41% reported deploying them at meaningful scale.
Faster settlement was the most commonly cited benefit, reported by 50% of respondents. Improved access to markets and currencies followed at 41%, while 40% cited a better experience for recipients.
Stablecoin use is also expanding beyond business payments. About one-third of respondents already offer stablecoin capabilities to their customers, while half plan to introduce them within three years. Overall, 82% expect stablecoins to become part of their financial infrastructure over the same period.
The findings could be relevant to Pakistan, where an estimated three million freelancers earn income from overseas clients and digital platforms.
Recipients often begin using stablecoins to hold dollar-denominated balances, the report said. But converting digital dollars into usable local currency remains a significant hurdle, alongside regulatory requirements, payment reconciliation and integration with existing financial systems.
“Our research shows how marketplaces and enterprises are putting stablecoin to work to improve cross-border payments, manage treasury operations and build new financial experiences for their customers,” said Rowland Berry, Payoneer’s vice president for stablecoin.
As businesses move beyond pilot projects, success will depend on integrating stablecoins into existing systems, meeting regulatory requirements and ensuring recipients can access and use the funds they receive, Berry said.
Pakistan is developing a regulatory framework for virtual assets. The Virtual Assets Act 2026 established the Pakistan Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (PVARA) to license and supervise the sector.
PVARA estimates that cutting transfer costs by one percentage point on about $40 billion in annual remittances could save Pakistan roughly $400 million a year.
For the country’s growing freelance and digital services sector, stablecoins could provide another channel for receiving international payments and holding dollar-denominated earnings. Their practical value, however, will depend on regulatory clarity, access to compliant conversion services and the ability to convert funds into local currency for everyday spending.
The report points to a broader shift in how businesses view stablecoins: increasingly, not simply as an alternative payment method, but as part of the financial infrastructure supporting cross-border commerce.
nukta.comPakistan proposes wheat price of PKR 4,500 per maund for 2027
Pakistan has proposed an indicative wheat price of PKR 4,500 per maund (40 kilograms) for 2027, up PKR 1,000 from last year's level, as the government seeks to encourage cultivation, protect farmers' incomes and strengthen food security.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the proposed price was intended to provide relief to farmers facing higher production costs, rising petroleum prices and inflationary pressures.
The government expects the higher indicative price to help farmers recover cultivation costs and earn reasonable profits, encouraging them to expand wheat planting and increase domestic production during the next season.
#### Why is Pakistan proposing a higher wheat price?
The government wants to encourage farmers to grow more wheat by offering a higher indicative price that reflects rising cultivation costs. Increasing the price from PKR 3,500 to PKR 4,500 per maund is intended to improve farmers' returns, encourage additional planting and reduce Pakistan's reliance on imported wheat.
Sharif said Pakistan's agricultural sector had faced financial difficulties in recent years because of inflation and rising input costs.
The country had also been required to import wheat during the past two years, underscoring the need to strengthen domestic production, he said.
The prime minister emphasized that the proposed price was aimed at improving food security, supporting local wheat cultivation and bringing greater stability to the agricultural sector.
#### Provincial consultations shape wheat pricing
Sharif acknowledged the guidance of President Asif Ali Zardari and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, along with consultations with the chief ministers of Punjab and Sindh.
He particularly thanked Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for her cooperation and suggestions during the consultation process.
The prime minister also expressed appreciation for the support of Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah.
The government expects the higher indicative price to encourage farmers to allocate more land to wheat cultivation, potentially leading to a stronger sowing season and greater domestic output in 2027.
The proposal forms part of broader efforts to improve farmers' economic conditions, stabilize the agricultural sector and reduce dependence on imported wheat.

Pakistan aims to turn its recent macroeconomic stability into sustainable, investment-led and export-driven growth by maintaining fiscal discipline, ensuring policy continuity and strengthening investor confidence, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said Friday.
Aurangzeb made the remarks during a meeting with senior World Bank and International Finance Corporation (IFC) officials to discuss Pakistan's economic reform agenda, private-sector investment and priorities for financing infrastructure development, according to a Finance Division statement.
The meeting came as Pakistan seeks to build on recent stabilization efforts, strengthen its sovereign credit profile and sustain economic recovery amid external-sector vulnerabilities.

Discussions with World Bank and IFC officials focused on strengthening investor confidence, mobilizing infrastructure financing and supporting structural reforms intended to create jobs and sustain economic growth.
Aurangzeb highlighted Pakistan's renewed access to international capital markets, including a recent USD 3 billion Eurobond issuance comprising bonds with maturities of 5.5 years and 10 years.
He also emphasized the importance of further sovereign credit rating upgrades to strengthen investor confidence and improve access to financing.
The finance minister stressed the need for a credible framework to maintain fiscal discipline, manage external-sector risks and create conditions for responsible, sustainable private-sector investment.
**World Bank praises stabilization efforts**

World Bank officials emphasized the importance of maintaining those gains through continued reforms and effective implementation.
Policy continuity was also highlighted as essential for attracting investment and improving productivity.
Aurangzeb said a predictable policy environment and consistent implementation were necessary to sustain economic progress and encourage long-term private-sector investment.

nukta.comSecurity forces kill 10 terrorists, including a woman, in Gwadar operations: ISPR
Security forces killed 10 terrorists, including a female militant, in Gwadar operations after militants attacked near the Gabd Border Crossing and in Gwadar city on October 22, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Friday. The militants sought to undermine the state's writ in Balochistan, according to the military's media wing.
#### How many terrorists were killed in the Gwadar operations?
ISPR said security forces killed 10 terrorists, one of them a female militant, in exchanges of fire after launching clearance operations in and around Gwadar city. One civilian was killed and several vehicles were damaged. No security personnel died, and the military's media wing said order was restored in the affected areas.
#### Why did the militants attack Gwadar, according to ISPR?
ISPR said the militants, whom it described as Indian-sponsored, sought to undermine the writ of the state, target local residents and obstruct development and prosperity in Balochistan. Security forces then launched clearance operations in and around Gwadar city to protect residents and eliminate the threat.
In separate engagements, the forces foiled the militants' attempts to spread violence and advance their agenda, the statement said.
#### What did ISPR say about the woman involved in the attack?
ISPR said the involvement of a Baloch woman in the attack highlighted what it described as the terrorists' exploitation of women for propaganda purposes and to provoke public sentiment. It said such tactics were contrary to Baloch and Islamic traditions, which accord women a position of honor and respect.
The statement added that the people of Balochistan had consistently rejected violence carried out in their name.
#### What happens next in the counter-terrorism campaign?
ISPR said the counter-terrorism campaign under the vision of "Azm-e-Istehkam" would continue at full pace. The vision was approved by the Federal Apex Committee on the National Action Plan.
Security forces and law enforcement agencies remain determined to eliminate foreign-sponsored and supported terrorism from the country, the statement added.
nukta.comEgypt urges political solution between Saudi Arabia and Houthis
Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said on Thursday that all options must be explored to find a political solution between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis.
He spoke at a press conference as the kingdom faces near-daily attacks from the Iran-backed group this month.
#### What did Egypt say about a political solution with the Houthis?
Abdelatty reiterated solidarity with Saudi Arabia at the press conference. He stressed “the necessity of exploring all avenues for reaching political solutions that guarantee a complete withdrawal from the territories occupied recently”. His remarks came as Saudi Arabia fights in Yemen in support of the internationally recognized government.
#### How have Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia escalated?
Saudi Arabia has this month come under near-daily attacks from the Houthis, including a strike on Riyadh’s airport that was the kingdom’s deadliest in years. The Houthis launched a major offensive in September and seized Yemeni government-held territory along the Red Sea coast. This followed the collapse in July of a years-long truce in Yemen’s civil war.
The Houthis also declared a maritime blockade of Saudi Arabia, the world’s biggest exporter of crude. They have since begun hitting its ships, territory and oil facilities.
#### What is Saudi Arabia doing about the Houthis?
The Saudi air force has frequently attacked areas under Houthi control, which include much of impoverished Yemen. More than 250,000 people have been internally displaced by the fighting there.
nukta.comBrook’s record-breaking double ton powers England to highest ODI total in Pakistan
England captain Harry Brook produced a breathtaking batting display, smashing the fastest double century in men’s ODI cricket to propel his side to a record-breaking 429/4 against Sri Lanka in the tri-series at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Thursday.
Brook reached the landmark in just 114 balls, surpassing India captain Shubman Gill’s previous record of 117 deliveries, set against the West Indies earlier this year. His extraordinary innings helped England register the highest ODI total ever recorded in Pakistan, eclipsing the hosts’ 375/3 against Zimbabwe in 2015.
### How did England make a flying start?
Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis opted to field first, but England’s openers immediately put the decision under pressure with an aggressive start.
Tom Banton and Ben Duckett combined for a 74-run opening stand before left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage struck twice in consecutive overs to give Sri Lanka some relief.
Banton led the charge with 50 off 51 deliveries, striking nine boundaries, while Duckett contributed 29 from 39 balls.
### How did Brook and Root take control?
Brook joined Joe Root at the crease following the opening wickets, and the pair transformed England’s promising start into a commanding position.
The third-wicket partnership yielded 159 runs, with both batters reaching half-centuries and keeping Sri Lanka’s bowlers under sustained pressure.
Root also achieved a significant personal milestone, becoming the first England batter to score 8,000 runs in men’s ODIs. He reached the landmark in his 186th innings, joining an elite group of 34 players to cross the mark.
The experienced batter eventually departed for 69 off 66 deliveries, including eight fours, when Asitha Fernando broke the partnership with the first ball of the 38th over.
### How did Brook and Jacks unleash the final assault?
Brook continued his remarkable innings after Root’s dismissal, accelerating dramatically alongside all-rounder Will Jacks to dismantle Sri Lanka’s bowling attack in the closing overs.
The pair added a staggering 185 runs from just 77 deliveries, taking England beyond the 400-run mark and putting the contest firmly in their favour.
Jacks played a blistering supporting role, remaining unbeaten on 60 from 33 balls, with eight fours and three sixes.
Brook, meanwhile, finished with 202 off 116 deliveries, which is a record for the highest individual score in an ODI played in Pakistan, overtaking former South Africa captain Gary Kirsten, whose unbeaten 188 against the United Arab Emirates in Rawalpindi in 1996 had stood as the benchmark. His dismissal to Janith Liyanage on the final ball of the innings brought an end to a historic knock.
The England skipper also surpassed Ben Stokes’ 182 against New Zealand in 2023 to register the highest individual score by an English batter in men’s ODI cricket.
Wellalage emerged as Sri Lanka’s most effective bowler, claiming two wickets for 56 runs in his allotted 10 overs. Fernando and Liyanage picked up one wicket each, but neither could prevent England from rewriting the record books.

#### What happened in the Karak attack?
A Counter Terrorism Department team led by DSP Imran Uddin was conducting an operation in the Charpara area after receiving intelligence about militants inside a house. The suspects opened fire as the team tried to enter, killing four officers at the scene, police said.
The provincial central police office confirmed the details to Nukta.
#### Who were the police officers killed in Karak?
The dead included DSP Counter Terrorism Department Imran Uddin, Station House Officer Afzal Awan, Constable Kazim and Bomb Disposal Unit official Amjid. A heavy contingent of police was dispatched to the scene following the attack.
An intense exchange of fire between security personnel and the suspected militants was still underway, police said. Two suspects had also reportedly been killed.
#### Who is behind the Karak attack?
No militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan is among the major militant groups operating in the wider region. Police, security forces, government officials and state installations are among its primary targets.
#### Why is Karak facing security challenges?
Karak, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, has faced growing security concerns amid a resurgence of militancy across southern districts bordering the former tribal areas and neighboring regions. Police and security forces have carried out counterterrorism operations in Karak and surrounding districts, including Lakki Marwat, Bannu, Tank, Hangu and North Waziristan. These operations target suspected militant hideouts and networks.
The region's proximity to the former tribal areas and key routes connecting southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with other parts of the province has added to security challenges. nukta.comNew speed limits in Dubai: 5 roads change from Nov. 1
Dubai will change speed limits on five major roads from Nov. 1, Gulf News reported. Limits will rise on three roads and fall on two. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will replace signs and reprogram traffic cameras to match.
#### How fast can you drive before getting fined in Dubai?
Cameras generally do not record a violation at the posted limit. On many major roads, the radar threshold is typically 20 km/h above it. A road with an 80 km/h limit, for example, may have a threshold of 101 km/h. Motorists should still follow posted signs.
#### Which Dubai roads have new speed limits?
The new limits apply to specified sections of each road in both directions:
* Al Asayel Street: 60 km/h to 80 km/h
* Al Mustaqbal Street: 60 km/h to 70 km/h
* Latifa bint Hamdan Street: 60 km/h to 70 km/h
* Al Rebat Street: 100 km/h to 90 km/h
* Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah Street: 80 km/h to 70 km/h
Motorists are advised to check the posted limits. This applies especially on Al Rebat Street and Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah Street, where limits will drop.
#### What is the radar grace limit in Dubai?
Dubai Police separates the posted speed limit from the radar control speed. The posted limit appears on road signs. The radar control speed is the point at which a camera records a violation.
This buffer is not permission to speed. Motorists should always follow road signs.
#### How much are speeding fines in Dubai?
Penalties under UAE traffic regulations are:
* Up to 20 km/h over the applicable enforcement limit: Dh300
* Up to 30 km/h: Dh600
