VPNs are used by journalists, activists, businesses and ordinary people to protect their traffic, access information and make surveillance harder. Privacy tools shouldn’t become illegal just because they make surveillance harder.

The excuse is always "online safety." But these laws make you hand over your ID or scan your face to use the internet, then go after VPNs so you can't opt out.

A new Congressional Research Service analysis flags a core weakness in traditional single-hop VPNs. Single-hop VPNs shift trust from your ISP to one VPN provider. That provider sits between you and the internet and can see both where you connect from and where your traffic goes.

Obscura is designed differently. You → Obscura relay → Mullvad exit → Internet Obscura sees your IP, but your traffic is encrypted and sent to Mullvad, so we cannot decrypt it. Mullvad sends your traffic out, but only knows you're an Obscura user, not who you are.

Utah has become the first state to explicitly write VPN circumvention into an age-verification law. SB 73 states that being physically in Utah still counts as being in Utah even if your VPN says otherwise, and covered sites can't tell users how to bypass their age checks with a VPN.

VPNs themselves are still legal. I don't think they realize just how easy it is to circumvent this because typically sites check your IP, timezone, and language on your system. You can very easily change all of this. eff.org/deeplinks/2...

The EU’s highest court has explicitly recognized VPNs as “lawful technical tools which users may legitimately use.” This decision reinforces the role of VPNs in protecting user privacy, securing online activity, and enabling safe access to the internet. www.techradar.com/vpn/vpn-pri...

EU officials are trying to revive (again) private chat scanning after Parliament voted it down. Scanning everyone’s messages treats 450 million people as suspects and threatens end-to-end encryption. Stand against chat control and mass surveillance.

Greece is now pushing social media age verification and calling for EU-wide tools. Ireland is testing digital ID for the same purpose.

I’m fed up with this direction. Every few months, another government seems to decide the answer to online safety is more ID checks, more verification layers, and more infrastructure tying real-world identity to everyday internet use.
