hi new people! there are a lot of you! here are some linked threads re my work that you might be interested in: 1. maybe you're interested in ddos and digital activism? i wrote a book on that, which you can download for free! bsky.app/profile/oddl...

apropos of nothing: ten years ago almost to the day i published a book on disruptive digital activism and ddos, and you can download the full pdf for free from my website oddletters.com/the-coming-s...

no current publishing news is making it less attractive for me to do this

the entire agent querying process makes me want to just print up a hundred copies of my Sad Gay Novel and sell them out of the trunk of the car i dont have for five bucks a pop

i extremely enjoy that my chinese colleagues now just text me things like WILL YOU COME EAT INTESTINES WITH ME with no other context bc they know i'll say yes

im watching RAISED BY WOLVES with my death metal bestie and i think its funny HBO loved CARNIVÀLE so much it decided to do it again (in space!!!) including the bit where they cancel it halfway through and nothing gets explained

today in my sophomore seminar we looked at Cory Arcangel and Wade Guyton and listened to Girl Talk and the class had some real "what do you mean you can just DO THAT" energy and it was so great

we're doing glitch art in two weeks and i assigned a Tony Hawk Pro Skater clipping error compilation and i think their entire heads are going to explode

i quite pleased with this image bc my strong aesthetic instinct has been to keep people/cars/traffic out of the pictures i take, but i think the moving cars adds more than i expected to this image.

i have gone inside.

man, lindsay crouse's face changes so much depending on her hair style and whether the person directing her has told her she's allowed to have emotions that day

i am constantly discovering new ways in which i am very strange

QUESTION OF THE DAY: This sounds like a joke question, but it isn’t. If it doesn’t apply to you, fine. But it’s a serious question with different levels of meaning. And I am genuinely curious. When did you first realize you were weird?

i drafted the syllabus for my Critical Theory Approaches to AI grad seminar yesterday and i am excited for this class! im particularly excited about how many books from my floor piles i get to assign!

currently mildly preoccupied with why the "fonts" (lets call them font-facsimilies bc they're letter forms but not typefaces) always look slightly wrong in AI generated images. not garbled anymore, just wrong.

man next go round im coming back as a food scientist they get all the cool toys. its like the large hadron collider but for mushrooms and little bits of cabbage

i agree and disagree with Weatherby here. if the best was to understand LLMs is as genre-machines, then its productive to think about their actions as *genre-determined (and determining) through character action and speech* with the LLM and the user each taking one part in a genre-defined dyad.

This post is unavailable.

thinking about given LLM-instances as *active performances of generic characters* (which i would argue requires anthropomorphizing language, like other forms of genre/discourse analysis with actors/actants) helps us anticipate and understand emergent behavior patterns.

i've got two papers at 4S this year! i'm presenting my working paper on the civic imaginary of AI as part of @zephoria.bsky.social 's All Political Economy of AI All Day panel series on wedneday and my death metal bestie is presenting our working paper on LLM summaries and summarizing on friday!

one of the sophomores in my honors seminar has a younger sibling who is really into noise and i got her to ask them what artists they liked. they said "im not into noise anymore, now im into ✨screamviolence✨"

ok i have finished typing for the day and i feel _quite_ stupid now but i did figure out that that same typewriter in 1976 typed two different documents at the same government agency which i promise is a thing that actually matters

i also feel that a seminar constructed on the theme of "dr s picks one book per week at random from a stack on his office floor and now everyone has to read it" would be pretty fun

fairly equal likelihoods of getting policy history or document theory or critical data studies or theories of computer vision or histories of statisticsor critical histories of business or french structuralism or genre theory or philosophy of music. and thats before you even get into the gay shit
