It’s funny also that this scandalous behavior is like the most wholesome thing a mayor has ever done. The Knicks won the championship and NYC’s mayor was so psyched about it he started crewing up to play late-night hoops with his bros. That’s the relatability that got him elected in the first place.

This took three people? Truly embarrassing shit.

Eric Adams exchanged personal favors with the Turkish government. Rudy Giuliani covered up evidence that 9/11 responders were endangered by the air quality. Mamdani took a jump shot off the dribble while his friend Steve was open on a backdoor cut.

As recently as like 2010, a pro athlete would be mocked or doubted if they admitted to seeking help for their mental health. Now pro teams have full departments dedicated to it and players talk about it openly.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Shoutout to Mike Pelfrey, who was all, “I want to talk about this openly to combat the stigma around mental health,” only to have the NY Post respond like, “Crazy Mike Pelfrey is too mentally weak to pitch in New York!”

Nothing stirs the senses quite like autumn in New York. The crisp air gently rustling newly reddened leaves in Central Park, the warm aroma of a pumpkin spice latte spilled on a subway seat, the rumbling moan of a million Yankees fans learning that Boone and Cashman will be back for another season.

Depending on where you live, you probably have some notion of where the worst drivers are. Maybe it’s hyper-aggro Jersey drivers, or Massholes, or oblivious Virginia drivers, or Georgia drivers, or whoever. Unfortunately, you’re wrong. All the worst drivers in the world live in Astoria, Queens.

Just saw a driver lurch into a crosswalk against a red light and love-tap a pedestrian, a different driver screech to a stop to double-park in the bike lane, and a third driver do a u-turn onto the sidewalk, all in the course of a two-block span.

There should be a moat separating Yankee fans from the playing field, with alligators and everything. Also little individual moats around every Yankee fan, but those would be too small for alligators. Maybe you use caimans.

I grew up with older siblings in the VHS era. If we rented a movie, we were committed to it, even if it was The Omen and I was 8 years old. I have not seen it again in the past 37 years but I still get chills about the photographer taking an accidental selfie and realizing he’d soon be decapitated.

In honor of scary media month: what is the first piece of media you remember truly frightening you as a child?

So does the U.S. Secretary of Defense not get tested for cocaine? Seems like, if there was any job in the world that merited drug-testing, it’d be, you know, U.S. Secretary of Defense. I got drug-tested to edit a damn sports website.

What do you say if, despite almost all evidence to the contrary (ie your name, your Long Island roots, your face and hair, your overbearing mother), you’re not Jewish, and someone you know wishes you Happy New Year in September? I always just say, “you too,” but then it further misleads people.

The cool thing about the toys kids get in goody bags at every birthday party is that they’ll be on the planet forever. Someday the oceans will dry up and on the sun-baked sea bed you’ll find a broken slinky that once held my daughter’s interest for six minutes.

You can’t do this because of stupid germs, but really every town should have a goody-bag-bullshit repository where you dump the stuff as soon as your kids forget about it. Then before their birthday party you go down to the goody-bag-bullshit repository and fill up goody bags by the handful.

Shout out to my 3rd grade classmate Bobby, whose precocious skill in song parody has softened the blow of 37 years’ worth of being occasionally subjected to “We Didn’t Start the Fire.” Thirty-seven years, and every time, I sing, “I didn’t fart, you liar,” and the horror abates.

Also the Angels and Padres just sold for $4 billion apiece so any owner crying poverty should just sell the team for more money than most of us could ever really conceive of.

On this Labor Day as we face a probable baseball lockout next year, just a reminder: Salary caps are anti-labor

I was definitely aware of Marvell Wynne as a kid, but not old enough to understand his as a once-in-a-lifetime caliber baseball name.

Sarah Langs@slangsonsports.bsky.social

This is the second time in Padres history they’ve started a game with 3 straight home runs 4/13/87 Marvell Wynne Tony Gwynn John Kruk

I just dramatically quit my building’s WhatsApp group in solidarity with the super, but not before I dropped a whole lot of shame on the entitled fucks talking shit about him. I am riding on the highest horse right now and have never felt more alive.

Pastor Carl Ruby, of Springfield's Central Christian Church, can state the issue more clearly than 98% of people working in politics today.

The solution to the male loneliness epidemic is having a bunch of dudes with whom you can communicate exclusively in quotes from “The Goat” sketch off Adam Sandler’s 1996 album, What the Hell Happened to Me? #havegoodmoshpitting #goodnightoldman #goooooodnight

I have a lifelong thing where I don’t sleep well unless I read fiction before bed. As a kid I especially loved the Chronicles of Narnia, and the way those kids are transported into a different, more magical world feels parallel to the experience of reading for me.

I’m done with playing it cool and will heretofore be celebrating all life’s small wins as if I were Jefry Yan. Catch the train in the nick of time? I’m on the ground banging the subway floor in exultation. Bite into a good sandwich? I jump as high as I can then land smoothly and do a little dance.

“Does whiskey count as beer?” “Everything’s coming up Milhouse!” “The frogurt is also cursed.” “20 dollars!? I wanted a peanut.” “Videotaping this crime spree is the best idea we’ve ever had!”

The five Simpsons lines I’ve uttered most: 5) Milhouse: My Dad’s a pretty big wheel down at the cracker victory 4) McBain: Ice To See You 3) You Don’t Get Friends with Salad 2) Homer: And who can forget rat boy? 1) Comic Book Guy: “Is there a word in Klingon for lonliness? Oh yes. ‘Aag-plach!’”

Ok but what about people who still have a pair of Ray Bans they got with a vision insurance credit in like 2014 and have otherwise never kept a pair of sunglasses for more than like three weeks? My sunglasses aren’t perving on anyone, they’re a triumph of frugality over lack of executive function.

Important, and, best I can tell, unreported: Mets prospect Mitch Voit has the middle name Veblen. His father has a phD in economics. Mitch Voit will one day be the first MLB player ever named for Thorstein Veblen. They should jack up his jersey prices and watch them get conspicuously consumed.

I don’t think it actually shook out this way but it’s funny to imagine being such an Econ dork that you name your kid Veblen and think he’s going to grow up to absolutely skewer the bourgeoise only to see him rebel and become a professional baseball player.

Bunch of people on the ferry taking photos of the Long Island City skyline. That whole skyline exists so people can look at the other, much more impressive skyline, which is right across the river and also very much visible from this boat.
