I love a good quest, and this one is right up my Murnau-fan alley.

With the release of "The Faust Bible," this Silent Sunday I have continued my investigation into the height of the great F.W. Murnau and whether or not he was, in fact, a giant. Read: oldfilmsflicker.substack.com/p/was-fw-mur...

"If you tell a story well, from that place which you know the best, which is your life, your experiences, it has a better chance of being fully realized as a film." For our Mar-Apr 2016 issue, Michael Sragow spoke with the late Tom Skerritt (1933–2026)

Whenever I write something like this that looks at AIDS history, a small minority of people will say things like "Get over it! Move on!" It's interesting to me that it's mostly those who remember it, not younger people. Anyway, to them: Nah. There's no getting over history, only getting through it.

There's been a surge of popular art about the first years of the AIDS crisis. In this new essay, I try to honor and explore a charged moment in which custody of that art-making is shared by people who lived through those dark years and people who didn't. Gift link. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/19/t...

"Fielder picks at this particular question for the rest of the documentary. What is Holmes’ perception of reality? Do words really mean the same thing to everyone? What is a lie if we cannot collectively all agree on a shared concept of truth?"

While at Busan International Film Festival for Cine21, I wrote a review of Nanako Hirose’s competition film BETWEEN TWO LOVERS. It’s a pretty nice throuple dramedy that finds a few places to explore in its premise. Also, it’s pretty cool seeing my writing side-by-side in both English and Korean.
