The Conscience of a Hacker, also known as The Hacker Manifesto, turns 40 today! Written by Loyd "The Mentor" Blankenship, its spirit still resonates with hackers and makers everywhere. A cornerstone of hacker culture. phrack.org/issues/7/3 #HackThePlanet #HackerManifesto

To all my American friends, please watch "I am still here" an excellent Brazilian movie about a real story of what happens in dictatorship. I am sure you will find a lot of its motifs very familiar. . . happening right now even

Photography of a departing train next to the small light in the dark tunnels at Paddington London Underground station. It took a few attempts, but it rear of the train is nicely illuminated when timed perfectly. Note: Taken safely behind the yellow line with a zoom lens. #photography #railway

"...[T]his devouring, appropriating, and automation of the production of art, of culture, at a scale truly never seen before, should not be underestimated as a menace—and it is being experienced as such by working artists, right now."

OpenAI is using Studio Ghibli-style memes as an ad hoc promotional campaign for its new image generator—despite Ghibli founder Hayao Miyazaki's famous hatred of AI. Sam Altman made his X avatar a 'Ghiblified' portrait. Disgracing Miyazaki is part of the point: It's more proof to them tech has won.

Right now there are a lot of new eyes on Signal, and not all of them are familiar with secure messaging and its nuances. Which means there’s misinfo flying around that might drive people away from Signal and private communications. 1/

Unidentified men grabbing someone off the street and putting her in a car because she wrote an op-Ed. This as flatly authoritarian as anything we’ve seen in this country in a very long time.

Video of the international student at Tufts being arrested by "federal authorities" in Massachusetts has been released and it's terrifying. They're not even uniformed officers. Just secret police thugs in hoodies and masks. From WCVB: youtu.be/PuFIs7OkzYY

“One young man sobbed when a guard pushed him to the floor. He said, ‘I’m not a gang member. I’m gay. I’m a barber.’ I believed him. *** He “began to whimper,” as his head was roughly shaved, “folding his hands in prayer as his hair fell.” He “asked for his mother & cried as he was slapped again.”

Incredibly proud to be able to say that I’m in here with so many of my literary heroes. I look forward to meeting them. The after-court happy hours are going to be the Algonquin Round Table but with more attack lawyers.

NEW: LibGen contains millions of pirated books and research papers, built over nearly two decades. From court documents, we know that Meta torrented a version of it to build its AI. Today, @theatlantic.com presents an analysis of the data set by @alexreisner.bsky.social. Search through it yourself:

“…you must be aware that it is not a crime for anyone — whether WIRED journalists, X posters, or otherwise — to identify individuals openly conducting government work that is of the utmost public concern.”

Sooo, anyone doing a countdown until we learn the efficiency idiots are going to bias the system towards giving contracts to Musks companies? "AI will decide which contracts are more budget efficient"... yeah right...

This is outrageously hilarious. . . "Oh noes they stole the data we stole from everyone on the internet without their consent"

Allies, this is where it starts. This is the first shot in their attacks on civil rights. Trans folks are merely the first group, but WILL NOT be the last targeted. If you sit idly by on this, you're already appeasing the oppressors and you are NOT truly an ally. www.politico.com/live-updates...
