Watched Tetsuo: The Iron Man for the first time ever last night. Definitely not for everyone, but I thought it was a visionary masterpiece. Sublime direction, a pounding score and a visceral sense of action throughout. Hard to believe it came out in 1989, honestly. So far ahead of its time.

A few of the latest games I've got the full achievements on Xbox on. Highlight was definitely Ghost Trick, a game I could never get into on DS, despite being a massive Ace Attorney fan, that finally clicked for me. Absolutely amazing game that was way ahead of its time.

Never really understood the love for Silent Hill 4: The Room. The initial previews looked terrifying, but the game itself turned out to be a repetitive slog, with the second half basically just being a retread of the first. By far the worst of the original Silent Hill games.

Weekend gaming session done and dusted. We completed RoboCop VS Terminator and had an impromptu visit from a friend, so pivoted to the original Devil May Cry, which has aged like a fine wine, before making it a good way into Rogue City. Heavy session but a good session.

We've decided to make it a RoboCop weekend by playing RoboCop VS Terminator (Genesis / MegaDrive) and Rogue City. Not gonna lie, I have the fear when it comes to RVT. It's infamously difficult and we had a lot of trouble with Waterworld (SNES) last year. Could make or break the session.

One week to go until myself and my partner in crime rendezvous for a weekend of gaming. It's a little last minute, so we're still deciding on which games to play, but here are the frontrunners. Looking forward to it!

Lovely little lovecraftian puzzler Call of the Sea 1000/1000 Great narrative-driven puzzle game with luscious visuals and a healthy undercurrent of dread. Anything Lovecraft I am down for and this delivered in spaces. Great game.

A good way through Disco Elysium now and I have to say that it is one of the funniest, smartest, most well written games I've ever played. This scene had me in tears, it was so good. The striking, surreal art style and unique OSTcomplement it perfectly too. Honestly, a must play.

This is so spot on. The secret ingredient as to why Final Fantasy is so beloved is the soundtracks. Nobuo is the master of weaving themes and chord structures across games to give that sense of familiarity, even when the games are totally dissimilar. The greatest who ever did it.

Finally started editing the next video in my definitive SNES collecting series. We'll be covering four games - Star Fox, Super Tennis, Pilotwings & Stunt Race FX. Shaping up well but still a lot of work to do.

This will be disastrous for the Bond franchise. The character has had such an enduring legacy because the Broccoli's understood that absence makes the heart grow fonder & the movies felt like events. Amazon will pump out subpar shows and wreck the brand's prestige. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Went to see anime classic Ghost in the Shell for its 30th anniversary last night as part of the NI Science Festival. Always loved it, but it holds up even better than I remember and many of the ideas and themes are as relevant today as ever before. Complete classic.

Also has quite possibly the coolest final boss encounter ever. I was a certified Pokeholic back in the day and this legitimately made me lose my mind, couldn't believe the brazenness of Game Freak. So good.

Just beat Pokemon SoulSilver and the fact that you can explore Kanto in its entirety in the post-game remains one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen in a video game.

Have read Handmaid's Tale numerous times and did my dissertation on it 20 years ago, and honestly, I always felt it seemed unrealistic when framed with a contemporaneous lens. These days? Not so much. I could see this coming to fruition in the next few decades, and that's scary.

Every game that contains online multiplayer requirements for trophies and achievements, should be required to release an update that unlocks them the next time you launch the game, once it is decided that the servers will be going permanently offline.

Watched Carnival of Souls for the first time last night. Brilliant movie with genuine chills at parts. Really liked the shot composition and cinematography and though it veered into arthouse at points, it never felt pretentious. Wonderfully acted by Candace Hilligoss too. Recommended.

One of the worst things to happen to gaming is how every single difficult game gets immediately compared to Dark Souls. Some of you need to go back and revisit 'NES hard' games on original hardware - no save states, no rewind, then come back to me.

Finished this last night and haven't thought about anything else since. Truly a masterclass in storytelling - the highest highs and the lowest lows. Profound, harrowing, heartbreaking. Already have the first manga collection bought and ready to go.

Finally making my way through Berserk (1997). Despite owning it for 20 years, for some reason I've never been able to finish it but this time I'm fully dedicated to seeing it through. Love the OST, voice acting & animation but well aware I'm in for a heavily traumatic experience. Wish me luck.

Hearing rumours that Halo is heading to PlayStation and Nintendo. If true, in many ways the end of an era, but it's impossible to get consistent games in Halo Infinite presently even in cross-play, so it can't get any worse. Let's see if they turn out to be true.

My favourite book last year was Trainspotting. Always loved the film (who doesn't) but the book was much darker, more introspective, sardonic and in many ways superior. I only recently started reading Irvine Welsh over the last couple of years but already he's becoming a firm favourite.

I'm guilty of the odd takeout every now and again, but I feel like we're becoming far too dependent on them. Restaurant experiences are infinitely superior and nothing beats cooking up a meal from scratch. Takeouts are convenient but often overpriced and underwhelming.

Get your food however you want but every time I start seeing posts about how Doordash is essential for human life I feel slightly insane

After 140 hours and almost a decade of on and off playing, that's a wrap on Dragon Age: Inquisition. All in all, it was an amazing experience - unbelievably dense in terms of story, sublime use of series characters, with satisfying traversal and combat. Really, really strong effort. Veilguard soon.

That's the original Metroid finally beaten. In many ways it hasn't aged well and is practically labyrinthian throughout but, equally, it's impressive how much of the blueprint for the series and 'Metroidvania's' in general was set with this game.

the atmosphere in Ocarina of Time remains unmatched to this day. idk how they made a game like it back in 1998 that still feels so timeless to play today but they were genius developers back then

Started writing a script on video game collecting in modern times and where I see it going in the future, as physical becomes less of a factor and digital takes over. Going well so far, expect a vid in 2025.

Update: she's now playing Blasphemous and is in love with it. It's not the type of game that is easily sold to people, so I'm glad she appreciates the dark, plague-ridden imagery and blood sacrifices. Need to give some of her recs a try. The Curse of the Golden Idol is certainly calling to me.

Had a robust convo with a girl in work about video games. She recommended Nine Sols, Core Keeper & The Curse of the Golden Idol, none of which I'd heard of. I recommended her Blasphemous and Danganronpa. Love these sorts of exchanges and finding out about games I'd never heard of.

Just over 50% of this year's GoodReads challenge done with less than a month to go? Never tell me the odds! Haven't failed it in a decade and don't intend to start now. Let's do this, time to go into overdrive.

This is your friendly reminder that Temple of Doom is by far the worst of the original three. Doesn't mean it's a bad movie, more that the other two are pretty much perfect in terms of what they set out to do.
