This piece was originally located on a different building that was torn down in 2010. The new owners of the property decided to save the mosaic and had it restored in 2018 at the cost of roughly €15,000.

Title, Artist and Year unknown (circa 1960s). 📍Chemnitz (formerly Karl-Marx-Stadt), Germany

A segment of the "Aus dem Leben der Kinder" ("From the Lives of Children") by Walter Womacka, 1955 📍Eisenhüttenstadt (formerly Stalinstadt), Germany

This neon sign was supposeldy inspired the "Go West Cowboy" in Las Vegas. The advertisement in Leipzig was put under monument protection in 1993. You used to be able to send a paid text message to a number and the sign would light up for 3 minutes. Sadly that service was discontinued in 2025.

"Die Löffelfamilie" (The Spoon Family) by Theo Hesselbarth and Jürgen Mau, 1975 📍Leipzig, Germany

If you go through the main entrance of the S-Bahn Greifswalder Str. you might have noticed this "new" mural. It's a replica of Walter Womackas "Wenn Kommunisten träumen" (When communists dream) from 1976, and was originally displayed in the Palast der Republik.

Not too long ago, Alexanderplatz had a very different look and feel. It's only from above that you'll really notice that Womackas "Brunnen der Völkerfreundschaft" (1969) was once part of a larger spiral design, that was removed during renovations in 2006/2007. (Photo #3 by B Sigursveinsson, 2003)

A little background to this piece: the former school was renovated in 2003 and the sun dial was already heavily damaged. Construction workers "traced" the original design, and removed the piece - being completely unaware of it's provenance. 1/2

"Sonnenuhr" (Sundial) by Gerhard Richter, 1959. Destroyed 2003. "Restored" 2003. 📍 Hagenwerder, Germany

They then "reconstructed" the piece with the tracing they had made, accidentally turning the polish flag on its head and applying the wrong color to the Oder and Neise rivers which were originally blue. The piece was only officially confirmed to be by Richter in 2022. 2/2

The mural is located in the socialist classicist city hall of Eisenhüttenstadt. Built in 1953 when the city was still known as Stalinstadt - it was meant to be one of several monumental buildings in the city, though it was the only one ever completed.

Public Service Announcement: The Tag Des Offenen Denkmals is rapidly approaching. A great opportunity to get a look behind some doors that are usually closed to the public. It's a nationwide event and they have a very useful app. In Berlin they even have a hard copy "book" for all events.
