If you look more closely at the numbers two things are clear: 1. More of the epidemic is shifting from Ituri to neighboring North Kivu. (58 of the 96 cases today are in North Kivu). 2. The response still is not working as it needs to (40 of 46 deaths reported today were deaths in the community).

Tweet from the Minister of Health of Nigeria on the recent travel-associated BVD case. Fantastic work from all countries and institutions involved - phylogeeks will know what the clustering means, but I'll let the relevant authorities report on that.

We need less ‘news coverage’ that follows a “genius billionaire voiced this policy preference” pattern & more news coverage that reopens our collective political #possibilityhorizon. & We need #structuralremedies that mitigate unchecked concentrations of wealth/power that erode democratic oversight.

During my keynote at Munich Media Days, I emphasized the key role of media for resisting simplistic AI narratives. The renewed hype/doom wave this summer distracted from the deeper goal of actually subjecting AI to democratic control & of keeping oligarchs in check 🤖💡 @medientage-mtm.bsky.social

Some good news today: A clinical trial to test Ebola Bundibugyo vaccines candidates has started. The first participant was vaccinated in Bunia in the DRC today. 🧪 #IDsky I wrote about the plans and the background a few days ago in @science.org: www.science.org/content/arti...

This summer, the @ecdc.europa.eu has so far counted 1715 locally acquired cases of West Nile virus infection, "the highest number of WNV infections in humans ever reported" in Europe. The disease also spread over a larger are than ever before. 🧪 wnv-monthly.ecdc.europa.eu #IDsky

Hard to find the words tonight. Helen was an amazing journalist, smart, hard-working, clear-eyed. She was also a kind, generous person and a good friend. Sad beyond words.

Helen Branswell was a gift — to family and friends, to colleagues, and to masses of people whose lives were made better by the work to which she was so devoted. I was lucky to know her. www.statnews.com/2026/10/13/h...

Feeling very honored and grateful today. Some of the journalists whose work I admire most have received this prize in the past and at a time when journalism is under threat in so many ways it’s just really heartening to be recognized by people who care deeply about journalism.

Congratulations to @kakape.bsky.social for winning the 2026 Victor Cohn Prize! Judges called his reporting on infectious diseases and misinformation bold, urgent and groundbreaking. And big thanks to Michelson Philanthropies for underwriting the award. casw.org/news/kai-kup...

It's also shocking to me, how little interest there seems to be, how little good reporting I am seeing. Is this the next pandemic? No. Does that mean it's not important and we should ignore it? No.

It's shocking that after less than 3 months this outbreak has grown bigger than an outbreak that ran for almost 2 years. A big part of the explanation is what researchers have uncovered about what happened in Mongbwalu in the months before the epidemic was declared: www.science.org/content/arti... 🧪

It's been two and a half months since the Ebola outbreak in the DRC was declared and it is now the biggest the country has ever experienced and the second largest the world has ever seen. Dozens of cases continue to be reported each day across three separate provinces. 🧪 insp.cd/sitrep-n077-...

The #Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak in NE DRC was likely underway for months before it was formally detected in mid-May. That's often the way with Ebola outbreaks, but the scale of the missed cases seems ... extraordinary. Terrific reporting by @kakape.bsky.social. www.science.org/content/arti...

The only good news at the moment are the clinical trials that have started now (my story below). 🧪 But while the huge number of patients means these trials will likely be able to enroll enough people, they too will struggle with the current situation - particularly the prevention trial.

The recorded death toll from the Ebola outbreak in the DRC is about to cross 1,000 cases. In reality there have likely been a lot more deaths already. Many new cases appear to have no link to known cases, suggesting much of the spread is still happening in the dark.
