New Zealand First get punished every time they go into coalition because they explicitly pitch themselves as a radical alternative that cuts through the chaff of both of the parties they end up going into coalition with. TOP will probably face something similar.

Random election thoughts: Opp are gonna suffer the thing NZF suffered where because they are explicitly on the fence they will piss off around 20% of their voters no matter who they choose to put in power and get thrown out in the next elections. That's the ride theyve bought.

It's really funny how people are just doing the same "the stuff that happened to come out when I was 13 was the objective cultural highwater" stuff as every previous generation. This is the Variety review from 1999:

This is objectively, verifiably untrue.

A charming series about young wizards entranced you as a child. A man wrote fan fiction of it, now he has movement that may be a sex cult. Senators meet with him about the machine god. The author wants to eradicate a gender minority, but the federal govt wants you to fuck one of them from her books.

cool, that's somewhere between about Charon sized and Makemake sized.

Meet our Solar System's newest dwarf planet candidate: 2026 ED138! Orbiting past Pluto, scientists found it in NSF–DOE Rubin Observatory data from earlier this year. Early analysis suggests it's ~600–1500 km across, one of the largest found past Neptune!🔭🧪 🔗: rubinobservatory.org/news/rubin-f...

A problem with Dirty Work (which despite all of it's actors being extremely active on it, basically ignored Twitter), and mainstream political commentary generally, is that to properly understand what is going on you have to be incredibly online in a way that the average person cannot conceive.

Department of Education posting Malfoid art btw. I’m losing my mind man.

Having moved on from Pepes and Soyjacks, It feels like it's only a matter of time before a government account somewhere posting block quotes from chudded-out fanfiction like The Last Ringbearer or Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality...

He now has to drop and secure his oar, turn round on his centre half way, seize his harpoon from the crotch, and with what little strength may remain, he essays to pitch it somehow into the whale.

Man, real sick of politicians acting like the gangs are cartoon baddies who sprung fully formed from Zeus's head, and not a social problem the state created by systemically abusing vulnerable kids for decades: www.stuff.co.nz/pou-tiaki/13...

RNZ asking the Sensible Sentencing Trust and TPU for comment on the new attack billboards is yet more evidence they learned nothing from Dirty Work. These are bad-faith PR orgs and RNZ is willfully running cover for them.

Yeah, the bigger problem for democratic self-government is the fact that an election in a country I don't live in gets to determine the direction and tone of large parts of my life for the next 4-5 years.

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

It's about middle-class people and small business tyrants mad that they're not the main character. It's about a lack of a big boat way more than it is about the lack of essentials like food, medicine and housing.

“Fascism rises from desperation, a crisis of essentials” no it doesn’t. No it isn’t. It rises from guys wanting to look cool and be cruel

your local car dealer, tradie or publican lost their mind in 2020 because the government tried to implement policies for other people, like bike lanes, COVID lockdowns and workers' rights. now everything is part of a big conspiracy against them.

so, the shearer is National, obviously. who is the sheep, getting all its economically valuable assets cut off and sold overseas, supposed to be? They know we mostly raise sheep for meat, right? and the wool is mostly byproduct at this point?

the project is expensive and time consuming because it's a bad project. and there is no world in which a four-lane expressway is a "bog standard road". There's like a couple hundred km of them in the whole country. Our bog standard roads look like this...

people pretending the wealth embodied in their house doesn't exist because it's hidden behind the curtains and under the bed is just more of the lack of object permanence that is everywhere in the built environment when you start to look.

Bluesky today reminding me that there are a lot of homeowners out there who consider themselves diehard progressives but will turn into Grover Norquist the second you suggest that taxing the wealth held in their homes is fine and good.

1873? (actually, 1883) so, like, built during the Third French Republic? what happened to the town hall that was there before? the 1811 town hall was stormed by socialist revolutionaries in 1871 and then demolished? huh.
