Out today on alpha.cartokit.dev v0.23.0 — we now run entirely on @duckdb.org via DuckDB-Wasm! This opens up a lot moving forward, but a big milestone today is GeoParquet support! Here we query 100k+ hurricane paths on the client, simultaneously generating all required SQL and DuckDB-Wasm code.

I am very pleased to share the program for LIVE'26: liveprog.org We have seven exciting presentations as well as a featured keynote by Brian Hempel! LIVE this year will take place remotely, so come join us over video-chat next Saturday (Oct 17) :)
This was an absolute blast last week! ICYMI, slides are up at parkie-doo.computer/talks/sf-sys...
Bay Area folks! I'm giving a talk this Thursday at SF Systems Club alongside the inimitable Shreya Shankar. I'll be chatting about cartokit + Big Thoughts ™️ on programming systems that support interchangeable editing via direct manipulation, natural language, and text editing luma.com/mzkxb97z
Out now in cartokit v0.22.0 — full, automatic codegen for your map to a (JS / TS) @vite.dev project! Analyze and style your data in cartokit, then export it to a ready-to-use Vite project when you want to modify or deploy the code yourself. Free to use today on alpha.cartokit.dev 🗺️

New paper drop! "Direct Manipulation and Natural Language Programming, Together at Last?" (OOPSLA '26): arxiv.org/abs/2608.26359 We extended cartokit to support programming via both direct manipulation and natural language, and observed how this New Third Way ™️ changed how data journalists code.

Andrew’s awesome, Hazel’s awesome, and this study seems super cool! Recruiting for these kinds of studies is also super hard, so sign up if you’re able!
We’re doing a user study to find out how adding always-on live values alongside code effects writing and debugging experiences for functional programming. See reply for sign-up details
Increasingly convinced (from recent both on cartokit and at Grist) that DuckDB is an unbelievably good foundation to build web-based data tools on top of. Now that you can have a DuckDB-Wasm client talk directly to a DuckDB instance on EC2...damn.
Today we are revealing the Next Big Thing for DuckDB: Quack, a protocol that turns DuckDB into a client-server database. True to DuckDB's philosophy, Quack is simple and fast. Setting it up takes seconds, and it works for both bulk operations and small write transactions. 🔗 duckdb.org/quack

Starting a Friday morning sipping coffee and reading @benclemens.bsky.social on the Sox offseason is just the freakin’ best.

A lovely new feature added to cartokit by @arfamomin.bsky.social—importing data from the cartokit Data Gallery! Now, you don't need to have geospatial data on hand to get started playing with cartokit—just use some of ours 😄 More datasets coming soon! Credit to Arfa for the idea and implementation!

tfw you wake up to see your PhD advisor CRUSHING IT on @wired.com www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZ_e... I’m amazingly lucky to work with @schasins.bsky.social every day! (Also, I promise I’m not the person in the thumbnail calling JS GOATED but it will always have a special place in my 🧡)
If you’re curious to get a more extended walkthrough of how to use cartokit to program interactive maps, we’ve got just the demo for you! From raw GeoJSON to a production-ready graphic in about 10 mins!
New demo! youtu.be/rCPLSr79aGg Use Cartokit to map your data using familiar GUI-style interactions—and let Cartokit write the equivalent code for you. Try it out at alpha.cartokit.dev.
Out today on @highcountrynews.org—a look at the disparate impacts of PG&E's fast-trip outages on rural Californians, featuring reporting by Emma Foehringer Merchant and @mariaparazorose.bsky.social and graphics by yours truly 🙌 An honor to work on this one—give it a read! www.hcn.org/issues/57-11...
As the resident baseball nerd of UC Berkeley’s CS grad program _and_ a massive Ballers fan, I always love reading Bryan’s thoughts. This piece is so dang good!
There's an @oaklandballers.bsky.social parade tomorrow to celebrate their magical season, and it affords an opportunity to reflect on why this team is so meaningful to Oakland bcantrill.dtrace.org/2025/10/04/a...

Another new UI detail on alpha.cartokit.dev — smart tooltips 💅 Smart tooltips: • Dynamically determine the topmost interactable layer under the mouse and only show attributes of that layer. • Perform screen edge detection and pick a space-optimal placement. • Can be turned on/off per layer. Zing!
Some nice new UI 🧈 in latest cartokit—UI tooltips and keybindings. I love the feel of Figma's keybindings so much, so I added a whole host to cartokit. It's wild how much faster you can navigate the interface! Out now on alpha.cartokit.dev 💅

Hello friends, especially Chicago friends. Today for @grist.org, @wbez.org, and @insideclimatenews.org, we've published an investigation into Chicago's lead pipe crisis and an accompanying interactive map. You can read the story here: grist.org/accountabili... A quick 🧵 follows.
Out today—a new interactive I worked on with @compatibilism.bsky.social mapping lead pipes in Chicago. You can use this tool to check any water service line in the city for lead, and explore how lead exposure overlaps with race and class. Check out the full piece: grist.org/accountabili...
A big shout out to the data reporters working on this piece, including @keertigopal.bsky.social, @juanpab.bsky.social, @amyqin.bsky.social, @peteraldhous.com, and many more folks at Grist, WBEZ Chicago, and Inside Climate News. I'm lucky I get to spend my days writing code to support their work!
Now out in limited preview on alpha.cartokit.dev — edit your map using natural language with GPT 4.1! Our integration leverages cartokit's deterministic code generation, so generated programs are _always_ valid. Want access? Consider signing up for our user study! forms.gle/4sUjSqSEEy7N...
For the curious, the demo is visualizing precinct-level voting results for the 2020 US presidential election, using data from The Upshot: github.com/TheUpshot/pr... In cartokit, you can program a map like this _entirely_ through natural language, or use a combo of NL and direct manipulation.
