A bit of catharsis for me today was metabolizing some of the illiberal statements/claims that filtered its way into Bluesky. For me, that looks like defining what mode of thought is being used - getting above it, in other words - rather than refuting it directly or on its terms. Examples: 🧵

Look at this ridiculous price history for a pretty regular 1TB Samsung SATA SSD. Not even an NVMe or huge capacity or anything. Literally went 5x in the past ~3 months to nearly $500. They're all like this.

“Jeff thinks the beans need to take turns lmao” is a load-bearing tweet. I’m not saying it needs to be taught in schools, but I wouldn’t exactly oppose it

The low-hanging fruit is Blanche and maybe half a dozen others involved with the "fund." You campaign on putting them in prison, no one will stop you. "Intent to defraud," "two billion of your money to insurrectionists, crooks..." No one dares. That's how you get people used to the idea.

At his 2013 beauty pageant in Moscow Trump vainly sought a meeting w/ Putin. Ever since, he has expressed admiration with him, & as POTUS has consistently shown admiration for him. Putin would have been insane to not exploit this valuable relationship. #ProudBlue www.politico.com/magazine/sto...

A modern course for navigating modernity would be a lesson where a class watched video clips of known liars and discuss performance, impact at time, and their modern perception of lying in public life.

[sitting you down]: you know God's a dude, right? he's just like you and me, except he's real strong and invincible like brad pitt was when he played that badass in troy. He big-banged the universe into existence. he's kinda like thanos, really nowadays you can text his son

Today is also the same day as the Tulsa Race Massacre in 1921. This was a racist act, but even that masks the fact that it was an anti-Black act. People don't say Black-phobic, but I wonder if "racist" is also an erasure or a euphemism of who, plainly, is being targeted.

And the framework of fear introduced by -phobic also brings in this false equivalence of "well, we're both afraid of each other." And it's like, well, the problem is not discomfort. The problem is that bigotry incites violence against a group.

The same argument goes against other -phobics like transphobic or homophobic. "Anti-" is a much stronger prefix, and the problem is not merely fear, but oppression and violence

I don't think I've ever heard anyone say "anti-Islamic" The "-phobic" term is much weaker by comparison. In a way, it begs the question "Isn't everyone a little afraid of that?" e.g. arachnophobia, phobia of heights, etc.

As an aside, the "Antisemitic" adjective is an interesting contrast to the oft-used "Islamophobic" which ostensibly serve the same purpose, one directed towards Jews and one directed towards Muslims. But "anti-" implies opposition, whereas "-phobic" implies fear.

Article: "The American Jewish institutional apparatus has, in service of the Netanyahu government, weakened the antisemitism diagnostic that American Jewish safety depends on. This is the strategic catastrophe."

And inflating anti-Netanyahuism into anti-Zionism turns a very reasonable, practically indefensible matter of criticizing "judicial-coup, criminal indictments, induced famine in Gaza, dragging America into an Iran war" into a much larger issue of litigating Israel's existence itself.

Regardless of where you fall on Israeli's "right to exist" or Zionism, there's a sharper criticism targeting the Netanyahuist policies of fascism, which enable and direct the "judicial-coup, criminal indictments, induced famine in Gaza, dragging America into an Iran war" things to happen.

We don't bring up this wacko shit that the author's talking about enough: "The American Christian-Zionist political base of the Trump coalition had wanted a war with Iran as part of an eschatological program whose details would embarrass them to defend in public."

On criticizing Netanyahu: "The proposition that criticism of the Netanyahu government is antisemitic is a proposition that has been manufactured, over fifteen years, by the Netanyahu apparatus itself and by the network of American Jewish institutions"
