BBC News - Jeremy Bowen: Goodwill running out as UK, France and Canada demand Israel end Gaza offensive www.bbc.com/news/article... The problem is neither a religion, nor a nationality. It is a policy, zionism, which is inherently criminal: steal land, expel the inhabitants.

This is mistaken. First, the government must show that it controls immigration. That's the priority. Only then can immigration quantity and quality be debated. BBC News - Keir Starmer promises migration drop as he unveils plans for 'tighter' visa rules - BBC News www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

No. A trade agreement can only be made by Congress, even when it has given trade promotion authority to the administration, which it hasn't in this case. This will probably be a limited deal on some tariffs. The Washington Post should know better.

President Trump will announce a trade agreement with the United Kingdom on Thursday morning, he wrote on social media, calling it “full and comprehensive,” without providing more details.

The Economist is right: basic and essential state services such as policing, justice, and defence, have declined so far as to become largely inoperative. This is far more dangerous for the social compact than, say, unsatisfactory free health care.

BBC News - Milkshakes and lattes could be covered by sugar tax - BBC News www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... Per capita sugar consumption has been dropping for over a decade in the UK as obesity rates continue to climb. This has everything to do with raising taxes, very little to do with public health.

80 yrs ago today, Buchenwald concentration camp was liberated by the US 6th Armored and 80th Infantry Divisions. Col. Coe Kerr and my father, Free French Capt. Peter Chatenay, both of the 80th Infantry Division, reached the camp just after the first tanks.

I remember Senator Inouye visiting the New Hebrides (Vanuatu, today) with a delegation from Hawaï, probably in 1977. A Nisei soldier, he had lost an arm in Italy. Many Nisei, fighting admirably, were wounded or lost their lives in Italy and France. As a Frenchman and a European, I remember that.

#OTD in 1943, the Seattle Times reports that 2,500 Japanese Americans from Hawaii are heading to Mississippi for basic training. As members of the 100th Battalion, they will join mainland Japanese American soldiers of the 442nd RCT for training at Camp Shelby. 🗃 #skystorians

Furthermore, current US administration's demands to Columbia University violate not a few laws and the Constitution itself. Additional proof that this administration neither likes, nor understands, what makes America great.

The letter from the current US administration to Columbia University is fascinating. From a party that much complained about administrative overreach, it shows how it despises Congress: federal money is the administration's to do as it pleases, with a MAGA mindset as lodestar. Frightening.

Says Marco Rubio, "No one has a right to a student visa. No one has a right to a green card." Like so many Trump followers, the Secretary of State doesn't want to obey the law: if a person fulfils the legal requirements for a visa, then the visa is given. Simple. It's called "the rule of law".

Unreasonable statement. Improving civil service performance by losing under-performing employees is proper management in any organisation. What the Trump administration is doing is "ideology purification" of the American federal civil service. That's different.

Did you know we had elected a Trumpian-type government in the UK? Well, now you do. Perhaps ministers could be "incentivised" to quit for lying to voters.

American defence contractors and arms exporters are going to find customers impossible to reassure about future support. India would do well to hesitate about buying F-35s and AUKUS may have to become FRAUK - those French subs now appear a safer bet.

German elections show an East/West "attitude" divide dating back to Rome, with the East voting for authoritarian, anti-democratic parties. Worrying. 90 years ago, they massively supported the nazis ... Please do read "The Shortest History of Germany" by James Hawes.

A transactional world order benefits those with the most bargaining power. Through its Parliament and Council, the EU must increase its supra-state powers or its citizens will lose sovereignty and wealth. BBC News: Trump echoes Russia as he upends US position on Ukraine www.bbc.com/news/article...

bbc.comTrump echoes Russia as he flips US position on UkraineWhile the sudden change in US foreign policy is dramatic, the president has been charting this course for years.

Just heard the BBC saying Trump and Musk expressed "genuine affection" for each other in their Foxnews "interview". How could the BBC know if it was "affection" and "genuine"? Between 2 narcissistic, cruel, selfish, individuals? Unlikely. They just need each other to each's own ends. Momentarily.

Any member of the "Five-Eyes" intelligence compact, of AUKUS, of NATO, or of any security agreement with the US should carefully curate information-sharing. This transactional administration is ripe for corruption at the highest levels.

It increasingly looks as if Lucy Letby’s conviction is unsafe www.economist.com/britain/2025... The UK's criminal justice system is not fit for purpose. Years of underfunding of the system have critically damaged what is a pillar of democracy: competent and independent justice, available to all.

The 1st duty of any state is to provide citizens with security for people and property. For years, our liberal democracies have favoured spending on health, education, and pensions, over justice, police and defence. We may have reached a limit. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
