www.rte.ie/news/ireland... I must correct @news.rte.ie here. The Tomb of the Unknown Gurrier was in fact a nickname for a floral arrangement covering the middle island of O’Connell Bridge, out there in 1954 for An Tóstal Festival and the Marian Year, and maintained for some time thereafter.

rte.ie'Floozie in Jacuzzi' among Dublin History Festival talesThree hundred events exploring the capital's past, are taking place over the next fortnight in what organisers say is the largest free history festival in the world.

I will be at tomorrow’s anti Trump protest in Dublin. I will be keeping a list of who and what parties do not show up, or only show a token presence. Same surveillance of their social media output this weekend. Trump is the cause of high fuel prices. Let’s see who his friends are

The first 24 hours of Burnham as English PM has not been good. He has completely deflated people. Appalling appointments like Healey (who turns out to be unrelated to Denis), Kinnock to Wales, and Bryant who has to be one of the worst appointees as proconsul to the Six Counties. Won’t last.

This is getting very interesting. Die Linke, the German Left party, is now at 20% leading in the opinion poll for the State election in Berlin in September. Along with the Greens at 19%, they have pushed the AFD into third place. SPD at 13% gives a clear left majority. 44% for a majority.

Sonntagsfrage zur Abgeordnetenhauswahl in Berlin • Infratest dimap für den RBB: DIE LINKE 20 % | GRÜNE 19 % | AfD 18 % | CDU 17 % | SPD 13 % | FDP 3 % | BSW 3 % | Sonstige 7 % ➤ Verlauf: wahlrecht.de/umfragen/lan... 🗓️ Nächste Abgeordnetenhauswahl: 20. September 2026 #aghw

Die Linke is now up to 22%. Same pollster so it is real. AFD now back to fourth place in Berlin. Die Linke is also making serious headway in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern the Baltic Sea coast province, and the SPD has also surged ahead there by 9 percentage points in recent months. Two left coalitions.

And, yes, I turned off my television set. Just before the ads by the way.

@news.rte.ie this applies precisely to the interview going out on Six One this evening. Where is the alternative left of centre vision of the EU to be represented. Where is the voice to question militarism, to question deregulation, to demand a Delors and Palme type of EU?

Mainstream media know they are increasingly criticized for their one-sided narratives. Yet instead of asking why or trying to regain public trust, they double down with more opinion pieces defending those same narratives. This is self-destruction.

I have often wondered if Jonathan Reichental, the Dublinman who opened my eyes to how we have let the car dominate our city layout, author of Smart Cities for Dummies, was Tomi’s son. May Tomi rest in peace.

For the Seanad By-Election, could I suggest that the broad republican left coalesce behind a single non party candidate such as Brian Feeney of Ireland’s Future, or Colin Harvey, with a view to a serious challenge that might win.

@irishtimes.com Rhun ap Iorwerth was elected by the Senedd as First Minister of Wales three hours ago, leading the first ever Plaid Cymru Welsh Government. His district is within 100 km of Dublin. Where is my push notification of this news? And you ask for a subscription? And you deny any agenda?

So yesterday Scotland and Wales elected pro-independence governments. On top of that, today, Europe Day, has been declared Republic Day in Britain, and an English Republican movement is operating alongside the ones in Scotland and Wales. With rallies. And a LibDem ex minister and MP has joined them.

I have seen BS in my day, but this crap in the BP beats all. How in the hell do darker summer evenings save energy? Daylight Saving Time had to be reintroduced after the 1973 oil crisis having been stupidly abolished in 1969. Save our long summer evenings! What’s the real BP agenda here?

Feachtas iontach dúinn don samhradh, ach ní foláir dúinn feachtas eile a bhunú, chun Gaeilge cheart chruinn a chur ar logainmneacha cosúil le Durlas Éile, Brí Chualann, Máigh Eala, 7rl.

Census 1926. Dev’s form is correctly filled out by him in Irish but the digitised version has him living in his next door neighbour’s house while the rest of his family is in his own house! Amazed that the digitisation people didn’t spot that and get it right.

The Government needs to demand a European windfall tax on oil company profits. Five EU Governments including Germany have signed a letter to the EU Commission calling for this. Why has Ireland not signed?

www.rte.ie/news/world/2... Whoa! @news.rte.ie you are way out of line here. What do you mean referring to Iran wanting an end to “its” war with the US and Israel. That war belongs to the US & Israel. As a national broadcaster you must be a trusted source. You cannot spread misinformation like this.

rte.ieIran seeks lasting end to war, rejects US deadlineIran has demanded a permanent end to its war with the US and Israel, resisting pressure to reopen the Strait of Hormuz under a temporary ceasefire as both sides considered a framework to halt the five...

Delighted with Council of State appointments. Especially Colin Harvey of Ireland’s Future, Donncha O’Connell, and Linda Ervine who has done so much to break down barriers. It was Linda’s brother in law David whose arguments persuaded me to vote yes and accept revised Articles 2&3 in 1998.

www.thejournal.ie/israel-churc.... Has our foreign minister got anything to say about this? Or indeed high profile Irish Catholic supporters of Israel and its current government? Any pretence that Israel is going to respect holy places has just gone out the window.

thejournal.ieIsraeli police prevent church officials from entering Jerusalem church for Palm Sunday massThe two top Christian officials in the area were stopped by police from entering the church, a joint statement said.

I have a policy of refusing to drink any beverage produced by Coca Cola group. I always ask for the alternative. What I usually end up with is high quality local produce with a low carbon footprint and for the same price. This example in Wexford city centre today.

Mick Caul has the figures out now. SF at 24% with a six point lead over FG and an eight point lead over FF. SD now half way to FF strength. And this is after they adjust the data for likelihood to vote.

www.rte.ie/news/2026/03... This should be a resigning issue for our Foreign Minister. A Dáil resolution should be brought to mandate Ireland to issue a letter to the UN asking for its vote to be recorded in favour of the resolution against slavery.

We have a great team again. They have given the whole country a huge lift. This will be controversial but if ever there was a World Cup to miss, it was this one, to be honest. Onward to Euros 2028 and World Cup 2030 nearer home. COYBIG. You did us proud over this past six months.

The Irish Times is happy to platform the far right (as gauged by the cheerleaders over on Twitter) in order to attack President Connolly and in effect support Trump. And they ask for a subscription…

German Greens ahead of CDU in Baden-Württemberg state election, meaning that former federal agriculture minister Cem Özdemir will succeed the 15-year incumbent Green minister-president Winfried Kretschmann. The Greens overhauled a CDU lead of 8% in three weeks, helped by anti-conscription sentiment.

And freedom must mean freedom not just from the mullahs and their secret police, but also from the shah and his secret police that was there before 1978, and from US and Israeli hegemony. It must mean the restoration of independent social democracy as the Iranian people had under Mossadegh.

Roberta Metsola@president.europarl.europa.eu

The end of the Ayatollah must signal the end of the age of dictators in Iran. After 47 years, it must be time for freedom. For all those murdered, executed and forcibly disappeared; For all those children made to grow up in fear of the regime's shackles;

However, they are this afternoon running under Top Stories the declaration of a Cllr that he will seek the FG nomination for Dublin Central.

Pat Kelly@patrickvkelly.bsky.social

I finally found where the Irish Times have buried the selection story. Twenty scrolls down, and then at the bottom of the Politics section. Nothing like the blaze of publicity given to the Galway West FG candidate. That is just pure, deliberate media bias. Nothing else.
