Motherfucker we have a shortage of accountants

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

JD Vance on H-1B recipients: "It's one thing if you were to bring in a person like Elon Musk. I think 99% of American citizens look at somebody like Elon Musk and say, 'if that person wants to come in and build something great in the US, we support that.' But if you're bringing in an accountant... "

Gee wow yeah I wonder why

Semafor@semafor.com

Visitors to the US are on track to drop by almost two million year-on-year. “We’re the only major country in the world losing visitation,” the head of the US Travel Association said. “It’s mind-boggling.” www.semafor.com/article/09/2...

“Housing is a human right” is actually absurd on its face. Housing doesn’t exist in nature. It is something that we should work to provide to every citizen, but it is not a right in the same way that speech or voting is.

Sam@samd.bsky.social

“housing is a human right but the problem is developers who build housing” is simply not a coherent message Especially when you consider the fact that Seattle has actually done a decent job at building housing and is relatively affordable as a result compared to other high demand cities

Just to be clear, we should absolutely work to make it so everyone has affordable housing, whether that’s through markets or governments or both. But this is an aspiration, not a baseline natural state that we’ve deviated from.

Bro didn’t Korea just imprison their corrupt president like last year?

StevieVanWailin@stevievanwailin.bsky.social

It is still the document that gave us the freest most prosperous nation in human hostory. And no system of free government can withstand the tsunami of corruption that has enveloped our nation today.

After the White House complained about an unflattering photo of Karoline Leavitt, it was removed from AFP and Getty’s systems. This is the photo in question. Please do not repost it. 👇

Here is the image, via @oliverdarcy.bsky.social, that stirred the White House's ire

Oliver Darcy@oliverdarcy.bsky.social

Scoop: AFP snapped an unflattering photo of Karoline Leavitt that incensed the White House—resulting in complaints to news agency and its ultimate removal from the wire service. We found the photo in question and have the behind-the-scenes story in @status.news: www.status.news/p/karoline-l...

no he isn't Peter, he is a bumbling liar who goes on tv all day to lie. he is positively dishonest Peter

Justin Baragona@justinbaragona.bsky.social

CNN's Kasie Hunt: Do you expect the confirmation of Markwayne Mulling to be bipartisan? Sen. Peter Welch (D-VT): "Well, Markwayne is -- he's respected, he‘s honest and he‘s competent... people respect Markwayne." Hunt: "Hmm, interesting."

Game theory strikes again

Brendan Nyhan@brendannyhan.bsky.social

The Trump WH is starting to reap what it has sown in terms of screwing over counterparties: -Iran can't trust a negotiated settlement so why reach one? -Ds in Congress can't trust Trump to follow the law so why bargain w/him? -Universities see past deals leading to future shakedowns so why make one?

I think an important plank for any 2028 presidential contender will be “I will put Trump and his administration in stocks and parade them around the country so citizens can throw rotten vegetables at their dumb faces”

Aren't these the people who are afraid of trains?

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Markwayne Mullin defends "show me your papers": "If you're here legally, there's nothing to hide. Most people already are walking around with a government-issued ID, meaning your Real ID or your driver's license. If you go board a train here, you gotta show your ID."

The question the Humanities should be asking is: "are we human, or are we dancer?"

Jeremy Bassetti@jeremybassetti.com

Are the humanities the only disciplines whose classes begin with modules speaking to the importance of studying the humanities? "Why study the humanities?" and "Why the humanities are important" must be cliches.

It's kind of stunning to see because there is a pretty clear off-ramp for them -- several even! -- and they just refuse to take it because they can never ever ever admit that they were wrong about something.

This post is unavailable.

These people don't believe in the court of law and know they can't win an argument under those conditions. So they manipulate the court of public opinion. This was also demonstrated by the recent article about Kash & his FBI

Asha Rangappa@asharangappa.bsky.social

This is apparently on X. I have a few concerns: 1) why is DHS sending photos of (alleged) evidence that should be in a secure chain of custody that is now lying on a car seat??? and 2) being armed does not on its own justify the use of deadly force — there has to be evidence he was trying to use it

One of the big media failures of the past decade is the ongoing search for the deeper side of Trump. There isn't one. His ideology, such as it is, is personalist, transactional, and zero-sum. That's as vain, vulgar, and wrong as you can get. He likes gold shit and applause. There's nothing beneath.

Michael Hobbes@michaelhobbes.bsky.social

10 years of this shit

Cynicism is what allowed people to say “both sides” for far too long. To be clear I mean the dual cynicism amongst both elites and the electorate.

Ned Resnikoff@resnikoff.bsky.social

I've increasingly come to view cynicism as the seedbed of totalitarianism, both because it can paralyze the opposition and because it implicitly validates the might-makes-right ethic of the authoritarian.

DHS has always been nonsensical. “Homeland Security” is a distinction w/o difference from “Defense”. If immigration is a national security issue, house the agents there.

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

anyway as i have said many times — and literally just wrote on saturday — i think we should abolish ICE as well as unravel DHS and i welcome elected officials who embrace both outright but i am also aware that any senate majority will contain moderate and conservative democrats who need an on-ramp.

The real danger here is conceding that indeed we cannot believe our lying eyes

Ben Collins@bencollins.bsky.social

Every second the murderer is not arrested is another second for feds to hide him in a place that would create a jurisdictional fight. He's on video killing a person. You have to arrest this guy an hour ago, but you might still have time now.

Yes billionaires famously believe in non-zero-sum thinking and express this belief through their generous support of the social safety net

Dave Karpf@davekarpf.bsky.social

The perfect Yglesias post: declaring “billionaires are good, actually,” as if it was some bold, counterintuitive take.

Under no circumstances is it advantageous to argue with Nazis on their own ground. Matt, you used to have worthwhile ideas to contribute. What happened?

Matthew Yglesias @mattyglesias.bsky.social

As we see in the replies from the hardcore bluesky fans, the counter view isn't that the right is more dangerous than I think it's that Elon Twitter is more rigged than I think so there's no point in participating.

because that isn't what they believe or how they feel

Atticus Finch (of Georgia)@atticus59914029.bsky.social

Why can't one of these guys just say something like: "Yes, I'm a Republican. But more importantly, I'm an American and a human being. And what the President has (posted/said/done) is simply wrong." I mean, what is the worst that could happen? They regain some dignity??

They just tear-gassed us. They tried to run us over in a van holding a peaceful protester. They shot us with pepper balls. They dragged another protester into the facility.

shawn@mulchy.bsky.social

moments ago, ice agents again came out of the broadview detention/“professing” facility to escort a silver suv out of the lot. one of the agents picked up and threw congressional candidate kat abughazaleh to the ground.
