I love thank you cards and emails! Yes, it makes me feel good about myself. I pin them up in my office.

Hey, students. If you did something cool and you have a faculty member who helped you do it, like write a letter of rec, tell us about it! We want to be proud and excited for you! I had a student come in yesterday to tell me they got into grad school, and it absolutely made my week.

The xc question on my org 1 final today: What was thrown in the river around midnight at chem club parties when your professor was an undergrad? Answer: a big chunk of sodium. When do I get to the stage in my career when I have a jar of sodium in my basement?

Post a perfect album from the 90s that isn't nirvana, soundgarden, pearl jam, or alice in chains. When I was in Boulder, it was this. And I stand by it. So good.

I gave my students this question on their organic final. It's only worth 6 points, but should be a gimme. I've already seen a couple of students doing Aldol mechanisms (both acid and base catalyzed). If they spent their time learning it, darn it they will show me!

LOL! This happened at Purdue when my wife was in vet school. I told her about this and she's like, yep, been there! Large animal tech Crystal Hagen is still a vet school legend for lassoing him! Source: ABC7 Chicago share.google/RgzgcGekcdJM...

I have to admit, I just ran my polymer problem set for Orgo II through Gemini and, man, did it ever do a great job. I wish my students were so thorough. It included molecular weight and polydispersity calcs from a data table and assessment of properties. 1/2

I started listening in Dec 2008, so almost from the beginning! Great group! Always fun to have MC Stay back in the studio!

The original #ER show hosts are back together today (Thurs 3/12) on Doctor Radio. The one-and-only @askdrbilly.bsky.social far right), "Doctor Sunshine" Dr. Chris McStay (l) & @heshiegreshie.bsky.social aka Ho-G (center) have been medu-taining us since Feb 2008. How long have you been listening?

One of my favorite memories of Phil. Our pet rats always end up with tumors so I asked Phil, 'Do you have anything at Endocyte that can cure mammary tumors in rats?' We got a chuckle out of it. He said he'd look into it. Last few times I talked with him he couldn't stop talking about LIFT

Great article about Moses Gomberg and trivalent carbon including comments from Bart Kahr and Peter Schreiner Radical chemistry pioneer Moses Gomberg probably made a trivalent carbon years before he realised | Research | Chemistry World share.google/sRLMpfl0xN0V...

share.googleRadical chemistry pioneer Moses Gomberg probably made a trivalent carbon years before he realisedRecreation of Gomberg's experiments suggests that he may have made a hypovalent carbon species years before reporting their discovery

Everybody likes to quote Gomberg's statement in his original JACS CommEd ("I wish to reserve the field to myself") but my favorite part is where he explains how he had to create an apparatus to exclude oxygen and water. In today's era of Schlenk lines and glove boxes, this is routine

I had a dream last night about this molecule. In the dream the question was what is the name, but it's got me fascinated because we are talking about carboxylic acid derivatives and this is a bicyclic lactate? Could it be synthesized from the alpha, omega amino acid? Should I put this on my exam?

Seriously, how far off the rails does it have to be for them to rule against him? Of course, we knew it was going to come out that way which is why they sat on it a month instead of releasing it when it was done. They gave themselves time to figure out a way to make it work but couldn't

Some days I feel that way about my organic lecture. Today I talked about reducing your grandmother with LAH, laser tag in the woods at an ACSSA party and finished up sticking my tongue in a glass of Coke until it was numb (Coke/tongue challenge). 3/4

"The Producer said we had lost our perspective. I don't know, he may have been right. When we started, I was wearing a tux. By the end, I was wearing a kilt with tails, a football helmet, and a holster with a rubber chicken in it." 2/4

You dont even need a ticket to board a train! Granted it might be an issue when the conductor comes by but you can even buy tickets from them often these days. You get on train, find a seat, when the conductor comes by you show them the ticket on your phone. Easy peasy.

boarded an Amtrak in December by saying my last name, so, no.

What I hear from Williamsburg is that it wasn't actually a goose (Canada or otherwise) but was actually a camcorder. If you watch the video of him getting on, it doesn't look like he has a camera but the thought it was one of the other passengers who got on with him

Obligatory boosting of the Bobby Fingers YouTube channel. A criminally undersubscribed YouTube channel. (Not for everyone, but I love his work.)

Got a random text this week asking if we would consider offers on our house. I told them we weren't looking to sell, but we'd take $10 mil (it's not worth that). They actually replied ("no worries") but no counter-offer. I told my wife, I'd could go as low as 5 mil....

Children's Literature History of Math The worst Electronics course ever (never really got past RC circuits - how can you take college Electronics and know nothing about how a transistor works or what it's used for?) Complex Analysis (so cool) Contemporary Political Problems (bad prof)

Tell me five classes you took in college. Molecular Biology of HIV History of the Civil War Organic Chemistry (2.5X, lol) Science Writing Physical Chemistry (woof)

I need to get back to NYC to hang out with these guys again...

Full house for the last show of 2025. Emergency Medicine hosts @askdrbilly.bsky.social & Dr. Howard Greller ("Ho-G") are joined by ABC News Medical Correspondent Dr. Darien Sutton-Ramsey, MD ("Special Cloth") to bring us the evidence-based info behind this week’s health headlines. #flu #vax #HepB

If we want evening exams we have to justify why we need 2hrs instead of 1 class period. For organic I always say that they use model kits and I want to assess them on how well they understand the material and not how fast they put models together

Andre the Chemist@andrechemist.bsky.social

This! A good assessment should be "how well do you know [subject]" not "how fast can you [subject]". (Unless it's, like, emergency medicine or something.)
