KU is closing their daycare and now Fort Hays is closing their Natural History Museum. Administrators are citing shortage of fund while celebrating their brand new multi-million dollar football stadiums. #priorities

A thoughtful, excellent write up by @richardconniff.bsky.social on the very sad situation @sternbergpaleo.bsky.social museum #paleontology #palaeontology #naturalhistory richardconniff.substack.com/p/another-na...

Really excited to see this very cool story published!

Happy to share that this paper led by @caberger.bsky.social with @stoilovamarina.bsky.social @rebeccavarney.bsky.social @pcart.bsky.social Sam Abrams and Maria Pia is published -- Unexpectedly predictable molecular evolution with diverse ecologies 🧪 🧬 🌊 #Molevol #EvoBio www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

We would love to host a post-bacc in our lab to work on mechanisms of neural signaling in a cnidarian model system.

We have it on good authority that KU PREP prep.ku.edu/apply will soon be open for business! In anticipation we are taking applications for an August/September start date. PREP is a post-bacc program for graduates who intend to apply for a PhD in the biomedical sciences. See website for eligibility.

We are recruiting recent graduates interested in pursuing a PhD in the biomedical sciences to our PREP post-bacc program. We will review applications on a rolling basis so apply now.

We are super excited to see this published. Podocoryna is a wonderful jellyfish model. Closely related to the model organism Hydractinia, easy to culture in the lab, and now a high quality genome!

Happy to share that our manuscript "A chromosome-level reference genome for the colonial marine hydrozoan Podocoryna americana" is now available at G3: doi.org/10.1093/g3jo... Many thanks to @baxevanislab.bsky.social, @pcart.bsky.social, @amkatzer.bsky.social and all the co-authors!

Free college is not such a radical concept. When I went to UCLA in the 80's, tuition and fees were $800/quarter. There is no way my family could afford to send me to college with today's rates. I am absolutely certain I would not be where I am today without this opportunity.

NSF RaMP and NIH PREP are wonderful models but are now defunct. Other cohort models where post baccs are funded by their PI but the professional development training is centralized - such as the Propel program are filling this gap.

A post bacc can be a critical stage in a career pathway towards an independent researcher. Many don’t have the opportunity to be exposed to research as an undergrad and want more exposure before applying to grad school.

A post bacc is a TRAINEE and as such should be given some level of ownership in their research. In addition they should be provided mentoring and professional development opportunities to help them launch into grad school.

🧬 New genome alert! We’ve generated a chromosome-level assembly for the hydrozoan Podocoryna. With both polyp and free-swimming medusa stages, Podocoryna is a powerful model for exploring the evolution of complex traits in early animal lineages.

So here’s to making 2026 a better year. For science. For our country. For the American people. We have the momentum. The resistance is growing. Let’s make 2026 the year we turned the tide.

When people celebrate the individual genius of folks in science, they should also mourn the collective loss of genius of folks who were actively discouraged or disadvantaged from a career in science because of the same person(s)

All hands on deck. I don't know how to get this across to the majority on SCOTUS, but speaking up now is critical. They do read newspapers I assume.

Jenna Norton@jenna-m-norton.bsky.social

On Thursday, the Trump administration asked the Supreme Court to grant them a stay on the Massachusetts vs Kennedy/ APHA vs NIH ruling. This decision will occur on the shadow docket, with no formal hearing.

BREAKING: Scientists are staging a “science fair” in the lobby of a Congressional building to tell elected officials about the critical knowledge the US will lose because their research grants have been canceled.

The implications of living and working in a red state just got a lot more frightening. In Kansas, our constitutional rights are now under the discretion of Kobach et al.

Ben Collins@bencollins.bsky.social

So am I reading this court decision correctly? We now have 50 micronations with their own laws interpreting the U.S. Constitution wholly separate from one another? But there's one guy with private law enforcement who is immune from all punishment who can do whatever he wants in those 50 states?

what’s funny is that if pro-cuomo centrist democrats were less myopic they might see that mamdani was running the kind of campaign that could help rebuild the party brand — accessible with an outsider persona and a focus on “kitchen table” issues.

Stay tuned. More to come. Judge Young ruled narrowly today since he did not have time to justify broader rulings. But I don't think he has any uncertainty about where the law and justice fall on these cases.

This is incredible! But what does it mean for us that had NIH grants terminated? What about red states?

Judge Young was appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1984. Here he excoriates the Trump Administration's termination of grants at NIH. This is just the start of a process. But it is ground-breaking and good news for today.
