This drives me CRAZY. I grew up playing sports w/ boys. I played on a U12 boys select soccer team, b4 switching to a U12 girls team that kept beating us. Nobody had any issue with any of it. Youth sports have never had the strict sex/gender boundaries that “XX-XY” activists are now trying to defend.

Andrew D Thaler@drandrewthaler.bsky.social

I live in a rural town and, like, I don't know how to tell you this, but the girls play on the boys team and vice versa all the time because otherwise we don't have enough players for a game and it's literally always fine so stop being weirdos about kids sports and just let trans kids play.

“don’t forget to vote for the Ballon d’Or of all time,” a made-up trophy with the silliest acronym ever, has to be the worst sign-off in the history of award shows

I’m really enjoying the post-Ronaldo/Messi era of the Ballon d’Or because the award is actually rotating through a variety of deserving winners, Harry Kane the latest

narrative writes itself here — Harry Kane was almost under-appreciated for so long but quietly grew to become the greatest goalscorer of his generation this is essentially a career achievement award, and it’s very cool he got to win it in his home city

Lionel Messi may have opted out of the Ballon d'Or ceremony but worry not, he did not opt out of making sartorial … choices … at the *checks notes* Messi Cup, naturally in partnership with *checks notes again* Messi Fragrances

I cannot believe someone, somewhere (and by this, I mean the powers-that-be at the Kansas City Current) think in-stadium attendance is a flexible concept

Daniel Sperry@danielsperrykc.bsky.social

Yes the Current announced attendance at 18,000. No. Nobody should allow that to be the actual match attendance number.

I have otherwise been unimpressed by Real Madrid this session (and for the last few seasons, for the most part) but they really did get it all right today. Didn't see it coming!

NEW: the people came to see Lionel Messi; instead, they saw Inter Miam’s hopes of retaining MLS Cup wane — all while catching a glimpse of Adri Mehmeti reflections from another routine MLS game in the Play Your Kids era www.cbssports.com/soccer/news/...

cbssports.comInter Miami's MLS Cup credentials take hit with midfield problems that are too big for Lionel Messi to solveMiami lost 2-0 at Red Bull New York on Saturday, failing to gain control of the game even after Messi's second-half substitution

it will catch few by surprise that Michael Bradley waxed poetic about Adri Mehmeti last night, the player’s maturity a standout feature “I didn't know coming into the season what exactly it was going to mean for Adri … We have put a lot on Adri's plate … and he doesn't bat an eye”

hello from Sports Illustrated Stadium, where many (including Kenan Thompson) have sojourned to see Lionel Messi he isn’t starting after a midweek trip to Spain so I’ll give it seven minutes before a “We want Messi” chant breaks out

Red Bull New York finally decide to put another one of their many chances into the back of the net, Emil Forsberg doing the honors to make 2-0 in the 91st that scoreline flatters Inter Miami a bit, who did take it up a notch after Lionel Messi came on in the 59th but haven't made much of a dent

fun, if erratic, first half in New Jersey - the Red Bulls have played well and Adri Mehemti already has a viral little moment to his name but they've also been wasteful and really should have a bigger lead

so Trayvone Reid (formerly of the Oakland Roots) missed a pen in the first leg that would’ve given Mt. Pleasant a 2-1 aggregate lead in the Concacaf Caribbean Cup semis … only to miss a pen in the second leg that would’ve given Mt. Pleasant a 2-1 aggregate lead he certainly isn’t risk-averse!

frustratedgrunt.bsky.social@frustratedgrunt.bsky.social

Don't look now, but it happened again

it also didn’t matter in the end — Mt. Pleasant won 3-1 on aggregate — but Trayvone Reid’s boldness is just as notable as his creativity

really enjoyable scene-setter for the U.S. Open Cup final, which is as greaf an excuse as any to dive deep into American soccer history

A 38-year drought in the U.S. Open Cup for the St. Louis area has a chance to come to an end tomorrow in Columbus, but before that, a look at how uniquely European and Catholic roots built one of American soccer's hotbeds www.cbssports.com/soccer/news/...

say what you will about Manchester United but their ability to consistently reach the same lows, no matter the personnel or the approach, is pretty darn impressive

saw You Can See Everything yesterday and it is a must-see in a lot of ways, but it is truly a must-see in a movie theater experiencing shock and awe with other people only adds to the whole thing (and there is SO MUCH shock and awe)

NEW: the #USWNT’s attacking depth remains their strength, Ashley Sanchez and Mallory Swanson bailing them out on another uneven day against Spain Emma Hayes: “The importance is the whole pack … Gone are the days of a [default starting] 11” www.cbssports.com/soccer/news/...

cbssports.comAshley Sanchez makes her case as USWNT battle back for draw against SpainAshley Sanchez and Mallory Swanson scored to help the U.S. team claw their way out of a 2-0 deficit against the world champions

#USWNT’s Ashley Sanchez after first international start in two years: “I know that I, defensively, could do a little bit better, so I think for me, that's my biggest takeaway. I'm really happy with the goal, but I think it did feel comfortable on the field with the connections that I have”

#USWNT’s Emma Hayes on Mallory Swanson: “She missed a big chance. It reminded me of the Olympic gold medal moment. I was like, 'This is the one player you want in this position,' and she lifted it, but she didn't miss the second one. That's what you have to do at this level”

#USWNT’s Emma Hayes also comments on the “great fight” of the team, also adds that she “didn’t learn anything about [Spain] that I didn’t already know”

post-match press conference with #USWNT’s Emma Hayes clocks in at eight minutes and she exits the room going, “I’m tired,” which is very, very relatable
