The boring but more likely bigger problem with AI is how attractive it is to mediocre, miserly people who will accept the enshittification of anything if it saves money. And it's the plausible result because we know all too well how many people will make that trade-off.

The people pushing this garbage are just untalented and lazy losers who assume the rest of us must be untalented and lazy losers too.

Well, let me tell you, this is either brilliant (a lie to make the leadership paranoid) or utterly treasonous. I'm going with the latter.

Trump on Iran: We hear everything they are doing, and we hear everything they say. This is classified. I just unclassified it.

I have a recent story about this. My family dined Saturday night on a patio, on an unusually warm night in Minneapolis. Three young Somali-American women were at the table next to us. They chatted, laughed, and enjoyed their meal. We did, too. It was a great evening in a great state. /fin.

Trump tries to start a race war: "The once Great State of Minnesota is being taken over by Somali Immigrants ... The Somalians should not be allowed to get away with what they are doing. They view you as weak and stupid people. Fight back Minnesota, fight back!"

This is simply no way to run a republic, and no part of a Constitution of a republic should prevent fixing it.

Musk has funneled more than $276 million into Republican groups and his PAC since July, building a huge turnout operation for the midterms. “The staggering amount of money makes Mr. Musk, the richest person in the world, by far the largest known donor in the midterms” www.nytimes.com/2026/10/12/u...

This report calls it $366m. Donating 1/3 of a billion dollars isn't speech. Even if it is speech, the interest in preventing the corruption of the republic satisfies the strictest scrutiny we might give to regulations of such donations.

It's Nobel Prize week! Time for your annual reminder that 72 years after Alfred Nobel died, economists got Swedish bankers to endow an econ prize "in honor of Alfred Nobel," against Nobel's descendants' wishes. Media now pretend the econ prize is as newsworthy as the phys/chem/med/lit/peace prizes.

Kevin J. Kircher@kevinjkircher.com

It's Nobel Prize week! A good time to remember that the economics prize was created by Swedish bankers in 1968 (67 years after the 5 original Nobel prizes) against the wishes of the Nobel family, partly to legitimize neoclassical economics in the public eye and partly to help banks avoid regulation.

I'm tired of the baddies in this story arc--Putin, Xi, Trump, Netanyahu, etc. It was good that they wrote some minor characters, like Orban and Maduro, out of this season, but the whole series needs a reboot.

Here in Minnesota, we talk about the weather a lot, though in a fact-of-the-matter way. The Northeast apparently needs to make it all about them and their feelings.

I worked about 9 months, part-time, writing radio commercials for a station in rural Pennsylvania. There were 2 women doing sales and they were tapped out, so I was a new supply of creative ideas. I got to know every business in a 20 mile radius.

A destitute and rusted USS Abraham Lincoln docked at a port in eastern Thailand today, marking its first full stop since deployment nearly 300 days ago. The Lincoln has been supporting the U.S. war against Iran. Families of servicemembers voiced concerns over the mental health of their loved ones.

Just muttering to myself today: America's long decline reminds us no constitutional text, however clear and commanding, can lay a foundation strong enough to withstand tectonic shifts of culture and corruption.

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library gifted more than 332,000,000 books since it was first created 31 years ago.

In recent years, I have asked my students to debate the merits of a system with a symbolic presidency or monarch, whose role it is to be an apolitical unifier. When they couldn't imagine it in the USA, I had them suppose it was Dolly Parton. Do we have any such person now? I'm not sure we do.

In. Freaking. Sanity. It is not a "defense" budget if it leaves millions upon millions vulnerable to poverty and disease and the country weaker and weaker because we don't invest in the engines of our strength, growth or greatness.

Chris Morran@themorrancave.bsky.social

If Trump gets his way in next year’s budget, defense spending will soar to $1.5 trillion. That would be more, adjusted for inflation, than the US spent annually on defense during the height of World War II. And so much about where that mountain of money actually goes is shrouded in secrecy:
