This is an essential message, repeated in all walks of life: '[Journalists] see their job as reporting on the actions of individuals, not analysing the social structures that force some people onto the streets in protest while others flee the scene in private jets.' We need more #OUTSIGHT!

You’ll have heard a lot about violence among French protestors. You’ll hear very little about the violence committed by French police against the protesters. And you’ll hear almost nothing about the violence of austerity. This is not a coincidence. graceblakeley.substack.com/p/class-war-...

At the VERY LEAST, the contract with the NHS should not be renewed in 2027.

Palantir didn't have to evade the UK's controls on lobbyists to get astonishing, unminuted access to government ministers and officials, or even to hire them to lobby their colleagues. Why not? Because there aren't any. My column. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Excellent article by @georgemonbiot.bsky.social. Part 2 could include how similar public exhortations are applied to cancer (lifestyle choices in the face of a toxic environment) and mental health (insight into personal failings in the face of a cruel and unequal world).

The threats to our resilience are the same as the threats to our democracy: corporate lobbyists shaping policy, with dire consequences for our ability to withstand crises. Burnham seems to want to change this. But is he aware of scale of the task? My column. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

I'm not sure I see much evidence of psychologists leading a quiet revolution of change. Maybe the revolution is a bit too quiet. But I pretty much agree with Norman Lamb, eg 'there's a lot we do in the MH system that has no evidence base to it'.

‘Psychologists are the people who can lead this quiet revolution of change’ I met former MP and mental health campaigner Sir Norman Lamb, to talk about his new book, ‘Be More Human: Why Mental Health Care is Broken and What We Can Do To Fix It’. Read, listen, watch. www.bps.org.uk/psychologist...

'People can be crushed by a system that is relentless and often feels pretty hopeless and negative. If you're always facing this awful long waiting list for your service, and you're not able to see people on a timely basis, it's quite depressing for the professionals.'

'How shocking is it that across the country, the map of prescribing of antidepressants pretty much mirrors the map of deprivation? That is not something any one of us should be comfortable with – we're medicalising the impact of grinding poverty, and that is morally reprehensible.'

'We know that for most people there is a social dimension to this – trauma, abuse, neglect, possibly in childhood, possibly at a later stage. Should we not be thinking of this as a fairly rational response to crap that's happened in life?'

'The vast majority of staff working in MH services really aim to do the very best they can for people...But they're working in a system that is often stressed to the limit, and so with the best will in the world, it's often very difficult for people to make an impact on people's lives.

We certainly must work on reducing the sources of stress, distress and trauma throughout society. And prioritise it above things like appeasing Elon Musk or allowing dogma about the national curriculum to make our decisions for us.

@naomiaklein.bsky.social perfect analogy: 'The neoliberal age – for brevity let’s call it the period between the end of the cold war and Covid – was “capitalism lying on the couch in its underwear, going ‘what are you gonna do, leave me?’'

This does not mean Burnham will do what he says! It also doesn’t mean I like everything he says (Gaza, immigration, questions on benefits to name a few so far). But it does mean in even saying some of the big problems can be fixed, he’s diverting from the script that holds up unequal societies.

You can doubt Burnham is going to do what he says, you can think he’s not left wing enough (I feel the same on many issues), but by any objective definition, Burnham’s position on most issues is much further left than most mainstream politicians and media. Relative v absolute, I suppose!

@francesryan.bsky.social is absolutely spot on!

“That’s the thing about a Burnham premiership: the right is scared he will fulfil his promises and the left is afraid he won’t.” My col. on what real change means - and why much of the right gets hysterical when ordinary people’s lives might improve a bit. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

If you've been struggling to cope with the heat in Europe this week, in a home that's not cut-out for record breaking high temperatures, think how much harder it must be for people who can't afford fans, have no nearby access to green spaces, or can't even get out of the house.

Across Europe, the toxic combination of extreme weather and inequality is resulting in tens of thousands of unnecessary deaths. But politicians are too busy cashing cheques from big oil to respond. graceblakeley.substack.com/p/europes-he...

Horrific indeed. This has been going on far too long. Where I live in Shropshire it's no different. Thank you @georgemonbiot.bsky.social for bringing this to everyone's attention.

What miles we've travelled since Shirley Valentine! In these days where everyone is a product, and neoliberalism sells the idea of perfection, maybe eventually Zac Barnett will be proved right: 'I think what audiences are going to want to see more and more is the truth, which is imperfections.'

No politician, however well-meaning, can enter the institutions of the capitalist state and escape unchanged. They will be pushed and pulled, until their original ambitions have been warped and contorted – an inevitable consequence of trying to get things done in a highly unequal society.

We're facing the second lost decade of the century. The far-right will blame migrants. Liberals will tell us the economy is working just fine. Meanwhile, bosses will keep making record profits - unless workers figure out how to take them back.

That's the hard bit because community organising is slow, local, and doesn't scale the way policy does. But it's also the only thing that makes policy stick. Without the organised base, reforms get reversed the moment political winds shift.

A neat summary of where we're at. For me, as a critical and community psychologist, I think this is the hardest bit: 'we need community organising to deliver the kind of mutual aid that has always protected workers from crises caused by capital.' I just don't know how to do this!
