Retired resource economist. I was the lead subject matter expert for energy-related CO2 for 20 years with the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Looking forward to communicating with experts on climate-related energy developments.

@pattrn.bsky.social You all were talking about hot water heaters and you mentioned tankless heaters but not heat pump water heaters. Please take every opportunity to inform the public about both types of heat pumps as they are central to our battle against climate change.

Just a note on reserves. If they are not producible at today's prices and with the current infrastructure, they are not reserves. If the price of oil stays relatively low and the lifting costs in Venezuela stay high then they will stay resources and not become reserves.

Some wild weather we have had lately--droughts leading to fires then rains leading to floods. Hot one day and cold the next. This is not to mention the crazy winds and turbulence. But cheer up, the conditions we have now are the most stable we will experience FOR THE REST OF OUR LIVES!!!

A question for healthcare experts. Did the majority people who can't afford the ACA premiums without the added subsidy only sign up after those added subsidies were available or have insurance companies jacked up the prices for everyone? Seems to be a question the media should ask.

When the defendants at Nuremberg were in power they thought it would never end and they would live out their lives in grandiose style. But then things changed and they claimed to just be following orders. It turns out that following orders is not a defense. This post is not about Nuremberg.

I’m not an expert on machine learning and AI. In the climate change space won’t AI come to the conclusion that human-caused climate change is reality? Or will bad data inputs affect the outcome?

I posted this 8 months ago. Now we know the answer that there is an active campaign to miseducate AI to avoid "climate hysteria." So AI just becomes an extension of confirmation bias. The conclusions are already in place. AI becomes another tool for the fossil fuel industry misinformation campaign.

Does anyone else love the short film Powers of Ten? I think about it when I need to put our world in perspective. There is also a newer version which contains updates in the science since the original version.

Here is a question for nutritionists. Why do Keto breads and related baked goods contain so much fiber when they appear to have no more than the average white bread. Is there a secret to adding fiber without changing the appearance or am I getting conned?

Medical experts: Given that the handwriting is on the wall in terms of vaccines, is there an effort to develop anti-virus meds that can be administered after the infection has begun. I know that polio was devastating for some people but less traumatic for others. So could meds limit the damage?

A few weeks after 9/11/2001 I was crossing the National Mall from the Department of Energy to eat at a restaurant on the other side. I looked to my right. I looked to my left. Even though it was a beautiful day I was the only human being on the entire National Mall. I fear a return to that vibe.

I know a young lad who is on the spectrum. I met him when his parents were stationed in the USA for a military exchange. He is back in Australia now. The last thing I heard that he did was a 30-slide PowerPoint on the history of heavy metal music. That's what I'm talking about!

I have seen references here to EIA's Annual Energy Review. That data set ends in 2009. For the latest annual data see the Monthly Energy Review. The data for all of 2024 was just published at the end of March.

The Energy Information Administration has hired a lot of very good computer modelers who live around the country to work on the National Energy Modeling System in the last couple of years. They are highly employable and can jump jobs easily. How many telework exemptions EIA gets will be interesting.

The latest STEO from EIA: Electricity consumption. After almost two decades of relatively little change, consumption of electricity grew by 2% in the United States during 2024, and we forecast it will continue growing at that rate in 2025 and 2026.

If electricity consumption grows in each of the next two years, it would mark the first three years of consecutive growth since 2005–07, though this result could be affected significantly by weather.

The growth in electricity consumption in our forecast is mostly the result of growing power demand in the commercial and industrial sectors. My comment: We are starting to see data center demand growth in electricity generation. More renewables, but coal makes a little comeback because of NG price

Fun fact: The Panama Canal uses fresh water and not sea water. Under normal climate conditions, Panama is one of the rainiest places on Earth. A recent drought caused big problems for the canal.

Now those who manage the canal need to consider fresh water reservoirs and other changes to infrastructure that will cost a lot of money. Those costs will no doubt be passed on to shippers and will eventually mean higher prices for consumers. Save this fact for your uncle at the next family meal.

On the local news there was a story on the cold where a visiting Aussie said it was 30C when he left Brisbane. He said he didn't know what that was in F. The local news reported that was 70F. Ah nope--more like 87F. Come on.

I'm wondering what others think about this. It seems in Europe climate change is less politicized than in the USA. Far-right Italy for example appears to be moving ahead with climate policy. Is the answer simply that in the US fossil fuel industry interests fund and dominate conservative politics?

Electric utilities: You are killing us with your distributed solar PV systems. We can't handle anymore. Same utilities: Solar PV systems require so much land. How are we ever going to get the transmission capacity to send the electricity to load centers.

One thing I have learned from my solar panels is that cloud cover can mean more than daylight duration. I generated more in October than September because of a week of cloud cover in late September.
