Myth: Bleached coral is always dead coral. Fact: Coral bleaching doesn't automatically mean death! Stressed corals expel the microscopic algae living in their tissues, turning white. They can recover if conditions improve, although prolonged stress can kill them. #marinebiology #funfact #ocean

MYTH: Coral Reefs only live in warm, shallow tropical waters. FACT: Corals don’t just live in tropical waters but also in more temperate, deep-sea elevations ‘feeding’ off mineral nutrients of such matter as dolphin feces rather than singularly the traditional photosynthesis of the sun’s rays.

MYTH: Sting rays are dangerous and will sting if you are near them. FACT: Sting rays will only sting out of defense. Most stings will happen if someone accidentally steps on one buried in the sand (Always shuffle your feet!). Fatalities from a sting only occur if the barb pierces a vital organ.

Myth: Octopuses change colour only to hide. Fact: Octopuses change colour for camouflage, but also for communication and signalling. Special skin cells called chromatophores help them create remarkable colour patterns in seconds! #marinebiology #funfact #fact #nonprofit

Myth: There used to be traces of dolphin meat in tuna cans. Fact: Thankfully, this has not been an occurrence. Dolphins have been killed as a result of being bycatch and in close proximity with tuna, but they have not been a source of human consumption. #marinebiology #ocean #funfact #nonprofit

MYTH: Sand Dollars are dead shells. FACT: Sand Dollars are not shells but invertebrates known as echinoderms. They can be found in clusters on the sea bed (up to 700!) ‘standing’ in calm water or flat in rough seas and can live up to 10 years! They are only dead when bleached white once ashore.

Myth: Sea bunnies are friendly. Fact: They are poisonous sea slugs that resemble bunnies. They consume sponges, which give them toxins. Don’t be fooled by their adorable appearance! (Also, don’t eat them!) #marinebiology #funfact #ocean #seabunnies #nudibranchs
