Petractis clausa #lichen on soft limestone (marl). Easily missed when not looking careful. The spores have a gelantinous perispore that can be visualized by negative contrast with india ink - you have to carefully prepare a sample without any substrate or other particles though.

The fungus is supposed to have (sub)muriform spores with pointy ends. The preparations I have done so far only have immature spores. I probably will try again with a larger (older?) perithecium.

Lichenicolous fungi are fascinating but sometimes frustrating. This Lepraria incana lichen has two anamorphs on it. However the one with the darker larger conidia is accentuated around a dead mite, so it might be arthropod specific? Any ideas? #lichen #lichenicolousfungi

In more detail from the stereo microscope. This species was new to me but not that difficult to identify. The lichenicolous ascomycetes are still a mess of literature - I hope a Flora of Lichenicolous Fungi 3 - Ascomycetes will be out sometime #MycoBookClub.

A lichenicolous fungus on Chaenotheca cf. trichialis #lichen. I think this might be something...sometheing Acremonium s. lat. however I cannot find any species parasitizing on Chaenotheca. I guess I am a lichen-pathologist today. Something to sleep over. #lichenicolousfungi

Can this be a (very odd) growth form of Chaenotheca ferruginea? It was growing in a spot with abundant Ch. ferruginea (also on the same tree). #Lichen. The ap. are nearly sessile, nearly urceolate. Spores would match Ch. ferruginea and thallus has red spots, K+ crimson. Photobiont is Trbx.

What is your favourite trick in preparing #Lichen? My current is: When you dip an acupuncture needle in moist PEG it gets sticky and you can pick up very small things. Put 'em in a drop of water on the slide and the PEG dissolves and detaches from the needle.

Moss spore capsules usually have 1 or 2 rings of peristome teeth around their open mouth. In Tortula muralis, the teeth are long & spirally twisted to form a slender tube that twists & untwists in response to humidity changes. This peristome is 1.4 mm long. Stereo pair; viewing instructions in ALT.

Does anyone happen to recognise this white fungus on the underside of Bramble (Rubus fruiticosus agg.) leaves? I've not been able to find any particularly helpful structures, but wondered if it was a mycoparasite on one of the Rubus rusts?

I think the Olympus BX50 from the 2000's is one of the most beautiful microscope frames*. It like the clear, geometric lines. More architecture than product design. Any other vintage BX here? #microscopy #PathSky

The autumnal Ilmenau in #Lüneburg yielded a foam sample rich in #AquaticHyphomycetes - in all forms and sizes. Notably absent are Clavatospora longibrachiata and Articulospora tetracladia.

Sometimes you cannot get nice #lichen samples with lots of substrate. Pressing a post-it note (and rubbing) to a beam of an timber framed house can maybe give you some chance to sample coniocarps!

That was me a couple of months ago. 8yo and I were discussing physics and that period of a pendulum (or swing) depends on length and not the weight. We timed 10 swings with him on it and 10 without...

To round things up: If small ascomycetes on ascomycetes are not your thing you can look next to them on the stick. I believe this is the anamorph of Tubeufia cerea (Helicosporium vegetum). #Fungifriends #Microscopy #Ascomycetes #Hyphomycetes.

Even obscurer interests? While looking at the pyrenomycetes on wood I came across an even tinier Fungus, mostly on old pyrenos (later also on lignum): With friendly help on iNaturalist I now think this is Tubeufia cerea. #Fungifriends #Microscopy #Ascomycetes

Obscure interests? Try pyrenomycetes on rotting wood. Nemania serpens on lignum of oak. Seems to be quite common - and rarely recorded. I wonder why. #Fungifriends #Microscopy #Ascomycetes
