As you may know, the independent cryptic crossword is due to end in a few short weeks. If this does turn out to be my last puzzle in this incredible series, thanks to all the solvers, testers, the fantastic cohort of setters and of course Mike / Eimi for everything.

Norwich #cryptic #crossword meet up – I’ll be getting together with some solvers to tackle a few grids this Saturday (26th) afternoon 2-6pm-ish at Dick’s Bar on Bedford Street. All welcome :) ▪️▫️ ▪️▫️ 🍺 🍸 ▪️▫️ ▪️▫️

Great to see. I enjoy writing these explanations. They’re pitched somewhere between a hint and a parse. If anyone fancies a crack at this puzzle, I can rustle up a couple of gift links I think. Pop me a DM. As an aside, do you have a higher education postcard for this clue @hbsj.bsky.social ?

Delighted to reach this milestone, and to announce the introduction of our new "Explain clue" feature

Little nerdy thread on #cryptic #crossword setters workflow.... I don't use Crossword Compiler all that much – preferring an Apple Note for writing & @mycrossword.co.uk for everything else – so I've made myself a database of clues which I can use to check grid fills for words I've clued before...

p.s. My favourite feature is when I check XML outputs of new grid fills, my DB shows me clues I've written for any of the words before AND inserts them into a text based output I copy and paste into my Notes programme - ready to write the clues.

Of the 1110 published clues I've entered so far (via import of XML files), I've clued the same word twice 16 times (is that. a lot?), and the same word three times only once (LIMIT). Pleasingly, each duplicate feels pretty different both in word play and definition *phew* ...

Most of my Bluesky posts are about cryptic crosswords, which is my other job. Writing puzzles is not all that different to design processes. Both involve a lot of thinking, sketching ideas, careful consideration of target audience and a passion for iteration for the best quality work.

Any queries, follow me and drop me a message. Would love to hear from you if you've got ideas or questions about creating impact for your research with visual communication (or crosswords, whatever you prefer!).

If you don't know me, I'm a graphic designer with 25 year career communicating information - and over a decade's experience of training researchers at Universities in the UK, Europe and beyond!

Come to the workshop (£40 what a bargain!), and you can learn to improve your conference posters, infographics, journal figures, graphical abstracts and presentations. We'll talk theory AND learn the basics of some FREE pro-design software.

In the pub with the Norwich History Festival team last night (Lucy is volunteering this year) and met a lovely old fellow who taught me to play the spoons. 🥄🥄 50+ years ago he was taught how to do it by a lovely old fellow in a pub in London.
