It’s unsurprising but shameful nonetheless that Sen. McConnell’s office won’t tell his own constituents what is happening. He’s leaving office, and this life, the way he lived it. As a disappointment.

🇺🇸 As we approach the 250th Anniversary of the USA, I'm posting this video so we NEVER forget what Trump's Patriots did on J6. Instead of honoring our Constitution's Peaceful Transfer of Power, seditious Donald unleashed a deadly MAGA MOB on our Capitol to overthrow our fair & just election results.

Remember in the original Star Wars where R2 says there are creatures approaching and Luke says "Sandpeople, or worse." What's out there in the Tatooine desert worse than encountering Tusken Raiders, anyone know? Obvs. not jawas, at least.

I watched The 13th Warrior the other night, and wondered if certain scenes in it were the inspiration for the look of Rohan in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings movies.

FYI, California has what's called a wide-open primary: all candidates of all parties are on the ballot, and you can vote for anyone. Here's what's wrong with that: sometimes, 2 candidates from the same party run against each other in the general. There will be no one for Republicans to vote for!

The end of my spatula fell off. Well, I thought, I still have my old metalworking gear from my armor-making days. Punch a pair of holes in the blade, drill a matching pair in the handle, push through tinner's rivets and pound 'em down.

Then I realized they were liable to rust. So coated with a thin layer of oil, and held the rivets over the burner on our gas stove to season them. Good as new now!

One of my favorite simple meals: curry potatoes. Bake your potato, cut it lengthwise three times, and stick a piece of cheddar in each. Close it up so the cheese melts, then open, dump in curry powder, and mash.

Saw a one-year reminder of this photo this morning. This was a pair we fostered and I loved them - they were great lap cats, but mostly slept. They didn't run around and play like most kittens. They'd climb up on my shoulder and go to sleep there. But after the weekend they sickened and died. :(

For Sarah's 60th birthday we did 3 days at Disneyland. We're sore today, but we had a ball. Sarah managed to do it all on her own feet, and I was pleased to find I could still take Disneyland like a kid.

Also, with gas prices being what they are, we decided to chance making the trip from Sacramento in our EV. It worked better than we expected - if you're new to this, look for Electrify America chargers; they're impressively fast.

Well I've finally had enough of Sacramento light rail. I tried, I really did - rode the train to work every day for 19½ years. It could be inconvenient, but I did a lot of reading and it was inexpensive, plus I believe in public transit and wanted it to work--but I finally quit last week. 3 reasons.

3a. Granted there will always be a bus bridge for something like that, but I don't think it's unreasonable for a *planned* outage to have the buses well organized. There shouldn't be long wait times for buses after you get off the train, long wait times for trains after you get off the bus.

3. Poor organization and reliability. The system has been going down more often; seems now whenever we have a stiff breeze and a little light rainfall, there are delays. And now part of the gold line is shut down for scheduled maintenance.

2a. They also aren't terribly accurate when they are working. For a while, if the marquee at my station showed my line was having delays and the other was on schedule, I breathed a sigh of relief--but if it said the other line was delayed and mine was ok, I knew I was likely to be getting home late.

2. Communications. RT has always been bad about that; I've been promised before, eg, that a train was "right behind this one" only to wait 20 mins or so without seeing one. The marquees at stations were a good idea, but they break and are left unreadable for months on end.

1. Poor security. I've just had my third catalytic converter stolen from a light rail parking lot. This time it was from a 1999 Honda Civic, which I thought people would leave alone. I was parking at big stations too, Watt/Manlove and Sunrise - not little isolated places like Hazel.

We went to No Kings Sacramento today. Tonight, when Mom and I connected with my brother on Discord, I poured us a bit of Irish whiskey. Then I held up the bottle of Proper Twelve and channeled my best Boromir, saying "Ireland has no kings. Ireland needs no kings." Of course I drank it neat - no ice.
