Whole genomes of the Metschnikowia pulcherrima #yeast complex! #yeastevolution
New study out in #Yeast: Samer El Khoury, Cecile Grondin, Hugo Devillers, Marizeth Groenewald and @jllegras.bsky.social analyzed the genome of the Metschnikowia pulcherrima complex to resolve #taxonomic issues regarding the classification of this species. 👇 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...
I have finished reading the new book of @larsga.bsky.social about The Power of Beer! Absolutely stunning information overload, especially on historic trends, styles, and political economy, all from the perspectives of brewing. And of course, a lot about #yeast and how people domesticated it!
Population-specific transcriptomic shifts underlie secondary metabolic diversification in Aspergillus flavus Link and the domestication of Aspergillus oryzae (Ahlb.) #fungalevolution imafungus.pensoft.net/article/1952...
New paper alert! 🚨 Very pleased to be part of this paper out now in @imafungus.pensoft.net We detail some key genomic & transcriptomic differences between #Aspergillus flavus & A. oryzae, 2 closely related groups of fungi viewed *very* differently by humans 🧪🍄 imafungus.pensoft.net/article/1952...

Keptinis making is truly spectacular at @kornolfest.bsky.social
We are absolutely thrilled to be here in Grodås, Hornindal for the Norsk Kornølfestival to discuss #yeast , traditional fermentations and to taste an insane variety of local farmhouse ales w/ @balintnemeth.bsky.social @gergohorvath.bsky.social
Wow, Collaborative Yeast Cross clones, a library of 11,392 segregants! #yeast
A library of #yeast strains captures a substantial fraction of genomic variation while also avoiding the confounding effects of population structure. Learn more about the construction and characterization of this CYClones library in the September issue of #G3journal 🔗 buff.ly/Mgz7LCv
Very interesting story on #Aspergillus westerdijkiae in cheese caves! #fungalevolution
Over the past decade, a toxic fungus that destroys cheese rinds has been popping up in cheese caves throughout New England. In a new paper from my lab, we tried to better understand this emerging threat to New England's artisan cheese industry. doi.org/10.1128/aem....
Finally, after hearing so much about the Jovaru Alus, the Jovaru ale from @larsga.bsky.social and his blog, I finally tasted this unique wonderful farmhouse ale in Vilnius, Lithuania!
"profiled fitness responses to over 600 bioactive and natural compounds, revealing broader and more polarized bioactivity than the standard #yeast gene-deletion collection" #Saccharomyces
Excited to share our latest #haploteam paper! We developed a barcoded collection of 520 natural yeast isolates to screen 600+ compounds at population scale, uncovering how natural genetic variation shapes chemical responses. Congrats to Abhishek and Marion, who led this work! doi.org/10.1038/s414...
"fungi are reliable biomarkers for gut maturation, with the notable emergence of #Saccharomyces and Malassezia as some of the strongest indicators. Fungal composition was strongly associated with infant age and with the later development of both atopic dermatitis and food allergy" #mycobiome

1/2 Happy to share this #Saccharomyces epidemiological study led by @renatokovacs1.bsky.social: retrospective analysis of all patients with S. cerevisiae isolated from sterile body sites between January 2019 and December 2025 in Debrecen. Rare sterile-site infections associated with high mortality!
rdcu.be/fk5fx Not all probiotics are harmless: our new study shows that Saccharomyces cerevisiae can cause rare but severe sterile-site infections in critically ill patients — especially in ICU settings, after GI surgery, or with central venous catheters. 🍄💊 with @pflieglerlab.bsky.social

Low-level contamination confounds population genomic analysis and also phylogenomics in this example of #yeast #Saccharomyces. Very important: "Contamination rates differed however among sequencing centers: was high for 2 #Saccharomyces studies (2% or 15% of genomes)."
It is no surprise that contamination leads to incorrect conclusions in population genetics studies. @audreykward.bsky.social, @mcmomany.bsky.social, @dbensasson.bsky.social caution that even low-level contamination has a greater impact on analyses than expected. More in #G3journal: buff.ly/kYFXQfM
Exactly 10 yrs ago I had the incredible opportunity to observe horseshoe crabs in their natural habitat, a majestic species I first have seen in David Attenborough's Trials of Life series, back in the 90s, on VHS:) Happy 100th Birthday, Sir! naturephoto-walter.blogspot.com/2016/05/atla...
Real #cask ale or real ale from the UK is a wonderful beverage often described as a "live product", with live yeasts responsible from secondary fermentation and carbonation. I found only one scientific paper on cask ale pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36073539/ so I had to try isolating from it in London:)

Finally, after 8.5 years, this massive new farmhouse yeast paper is out! We've analyzed no less than 1760 yeast samples, and discovered that there is more farmhouse yeast than all known modern beer yeast put together. New results about contamination, too. www.garshol.priv.no/blog/440.html
Candida Genome Database’s new website is live! #yeast
The Candida Genome Database’s new website is now live! Everything has been entirely rewritten from scratch! A quarter of a century old Perl code (some of which I wrote!) producing HTML 2.0 (😬) is all gone, with modern python in its place, producing modern webpages with JavaScript and CSS to make
