I see this repeatedly with my female colleagues. They do amazing work, often far exceeding that of their male peers, yet are neither celebrated nor promoted to the same degree.
I feel morally injured just witnessing it. I cannot imagine what it feels like to experience it directly.
We found that the most gendered experience wasn’t work-life balance, the focus of most retention efforts. It was feeling devalued, in formal evaluations, but particularly in everyday interactions. Unlike every other topic, the gender gap in devaluation was larger among more senior faculty.

Harvard researchers studied 718 companies and found AI coding agents increased lines of code by 30%, but no major increase in completed tasks or projects.
Meanwhile, review time rose 49%.
Generating code faster hasn’t translated into completing more work. The bottleneck has moved to code reviews.

Child mortality has declined in all world regions.
In 1950, almost one in four children worldwide died before their fifth birthday. In Africa, one in three children died.
The chart shows the change since then. In every region, the mortality rate of children has declined.

Malaria is a very temperature- and rainfall-sensitive disease. This means it’s one whose distribution and severity could change a lot in a warming climate.

The world faces two energy problems: hundreds of millions lack access to energy, and most of our energy still produces greenhouse gas emissions.
The first energy problem of the world is the problem of energy poverty. People in very poor countries have very low emissions.
